We've already covered the lengthy game history of Sonic The Hedgehog, but he's also had a noteworthy career in comic books and cartoons as well. Over the span of his fifteen year career, the famous mammal has appeared in several animated series and a flurry of comic books, including the long-running Archie Comics series (currently at almost 170 issues and counting). Sega-16 contributor Aaron Savadge takes a this storied past in our latest feature Sonic The Hedgehog: From Cartoons to Comics (http://www.sega-16.com/2006/10/sonic-from-cartoons-to-comics/).

Sonic the Comic was one of the most awesomest things ever invented

I remember when I was a kid, watching the Adventures of Sonic.
I really liked that series, with all the humour that it has, despite the series being a little copy of the cartoons with the “big bad boss that have is really stupid fellows”.

When the metal themed Sonic cartoons arrived at Portugal I’m a little bit older and have looked at him with other eyes. Since I don’t like to much futuristic/robotic cartoons (being the exception Ghost in the Shell), it don’t catch me, and the lost of the humoristic part was a big help for that lack of interest.

The underground series is really bad (in my opinion).

But I will always remember that Scratch and Grounder

Same here. I guess, looking on the bright side, it was killed off pretty much while it was in its prime.

I keep meaning to share some of the 'contemporary' references that can be found in a some issues - like the first unveiling of the 'Mega Drive 32', the Pirate TV strips, and the utter insanity that was the DeCap Attack! strips. Oh, and the letters complaining that the new guy Knuckles is just an overrated Sonic in red XD

Sharper than a cyber-razor cut

An interesting sidenote, Sonic SatAM was actually named by Congress as the second most violent kid's show of 1993/1994.

The #1? Power Rangers.

^

How intriguing, I remember though, all of what the article covered, it all rocked and i enjoyed it all just as much as the games, especially the first comic series; which I still have in my collection, every one in the series ever released. :P

I forgot about that. I do remember hearing about it though.

Apparently, no one in Congress bothered to watch a full day's worth of children's programming.

Decap Attack was really awesome, as were Streets of Rage and Kid Chameleon. I felt the comic went downhill (although still remained awesome) when they started replacing the different series with below standard stories of various Sonic characters. The first batch of Shinobi stories scared me when I first read them. :)

The news section was always awesome to read and I was very disappointed when they started replacing it with posters of Sonic/Tails/Various badniks. What was the name of the poster comic they did that ran alongside STC for a while?

I'm going to have to go and dig out my old copies of them and spend a day or two reading them.

Come on, try and tell me Captain Plunder isn't a fantastic original character :P

You're thinking of Sonic the Poster Comic. It's really only a couple of reprinted strips alongside pinups.

(they're in .cbr format, so they can be easily viewed using Comic Book Viewer (http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay) - you can un-RAR the JPEG images within the files, though, in case you're some kind of paranoid techno-Luddite. Coming up next: Sparkster & Kid Chameleon)

Can anyone name me that evil robot that was the size and shape of a man? Can't remember his name; he appeared quite a lot in the Sonic comics as a villain, nowhere else though; I remember him being a great character.

If you're talking about Sonic the Comic it was probably Brutus.

Quick, someone help me out.

I remember as a youth, back when Sonic 1 was just getting big, I was given a free one-shot issue of Sonic from the local Kay-Bee Toys. The art was vastly different from the Archie comics and it seemed to detail Sonic talking with a human professor of some kind, kind of a good counterpart to Robotnik. Anyone have any idea what I'm going on about?

In STC #8 it charted the origins of Sonic and Robotnik. The good professor was named Kintobor (see what they did there?) and he planned to get rid of all the evil in the world. Basically there was an accident and Kintobor turned into Robotnik. I don't know if that's what your after, all I know is this topic has Sonic the Comic connections and since it was so awesome I will try to mention it as often as possible.

I hope that was quick enough.

That kinda helps, but (and I could be wrong here) I seem to remember it coming out before the Archie series started in America. The name 'Kintobor' sounds familiar, but being as I owned a few years' worth of the Sonic series growing up, I may be thinking of the issue you mentioned.

Long before the comic series actually started Archie made an eight page sample issue that was distribued free at toy stores by Sega of America which didn't resemble the later series at all. This later lead to a four issue mini-series that lead to the creation of the Archie Comics Sonic line. This is probably what you're talking about.

It can't be a STC issue though because STC was never released in the US unfortunately.

Here, have the first Kid Chameleon strip! (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HADFA3N0) It ran from issues 7 to 12, and was the fourth Sega game after Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Wonderboy to be run in the comic.

THAT'S IT! THANK YOU!

Anybody got scans of this?
