What exactly was G4?

It was a processor in the last generation of Macs. Actually two generations ago. It was dead quite some time ago.

I don't get why they had to kill Tech TV.

It's about time. G4 has been garbage since the get go. I consider this karma for what they did to Tech TV.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

So whatīs the commotion about anyway?
It was just a goddamn processor. And I always thought that Macs were stronger than PCs, so I guess the G4 should have been a good one, too.
Or is this some anti-Apple thing?

While G4 does happen to be the name of a once-snazzy Mac processor, that sly Joe Redifer has deviously mislead you!

G4 was an American TV channel. The whole idea was to have it built from programs about video games and the gaming lifestyle. It merged a couple years back with another television network called TechTV. This really didn't do TechTV any favours, as it resulted in the cancellation of many TechTV programs and the firing of TechTV employees.

The two split a year later, and G4 was left to its own devices, where it began to lose its video game centric vision, instead trying to compete with other "stupid fun male lifestyle" channels. At this point, the long-time viewers, and most everyone, largely stopped caring, if they'd even cared in the first place.

NBC Europe had a pretty similar thing going on for years.
Giga, a TV show running five hours a day plus three hours of spin-offs every day.
It started in the end of the nineties, with different parts of the show, one focusing on games, on on hardware, one on the internet, one on lifestyle, one on sports...
Each section had their own "showmasters", and each section took turns every 7 minutes or so.
The interesting part was that when, say, the games section is not on air, you could chat with themabout whatever the topic of the show was, and have a bit of an influence on the show. It was a TV show and a big website merged into one, and the community was quite big.
But for some odd reason, despite the big community, NBC Europe eventually closed itīs doors and the channel that came after it had no interest in continueing the show.
It was an interesting concept, seeing those total idiots talking about games and showing what morons they were ("I remember when I first played Legacy of Kain on my Mega Drive...":daze: ) when they died during a games tutorial. Sometimes they had visitors like Peter Molyneux or some Capcom staff.

The website is still there, and you can watch the show (or what remains of it) via live stream now.

G4 was okay when it first started. It had too few programs, and several were stupid. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but a bit of it was decent. G4TV.com (the show) was good sometimes, Cinematech had its moments, Pulse was okay if you didn't watch it too often, and Icons had some great episodes (although some disappointments also). And I loved the Starcade reruns. Some of the others though, didn't even sound remotely good on paper, so I don't know why they got greenlit in the first place. In particular I'm referring to Cheat! - great, a TV show dedicated to giving out cheat codes anyone can get off the internet without sitting through commercials and the lame host - and Portal, which made no sense whatsoever. Arena was also incredibly boring, despite having Will Wheaton.

Its a shame to see Icons go, definately my favorite of the lot. There were a few lame episodes, but more were good than bad. It's about time it got shut down though, there really is some lame ass shit on there.

I'm gonna miss Star Trek 2.0 and X-Play. Everything else was rubbish.

About time. They screwed TechTV over, and then dropped most, if not all, gaming content.

And I would say something about missing Arrested Development, but when one has it on DVD... (or is soon to own all of it on DVD...)

Agreed! The few good ones I've seen were very interesting.

I have the one about the Splinter Cell series, it came on the DVD bundled in the collector's edition of Chaos Theory. Some of them (like the Splinter Cell episode, and I think there was one on Ratchet and Clank or something similar) were a bit premature, but the series as a whole was very well-made and informative.

Icons was the show about video game characters right? A few years ago Australia's satellite TV network had a video game channel, then we lost it for some reason I can't remember now. Good memories...
