Digitpress.com have a rarity guide.

Digital Press update their rarity lists at roughly the same rate as tectonic plate movement, though.

I'd take rarity advice with a great big heaping bowl of salt, because it's usually used to sell you something. :)

I'd say the only being in Europe and Japan thing is why it's so damn expensive.

$20 is dirt cheap! What a great find, where did you buy them?

Erm, why would they need to update a rarity list for a dead console? A game is hardly going to change that much in it's rarity.

I do agree that it should be taken with some salt (especially for the non-US games) and used as a rough guide only. Maybe a rarity guide could be added to Sega-16's master lists?

MegaMan: The Wily Wars used to be incredibly hard to find, as it never sold well - plus, like Rez, some copies of the game were faulty. Apparently in early 2004 a massive stock was found in a Japanese warehous after the owners had gone bust, meaning for a short period MM:tWW copies flooded eBay and the like. Granted, it's rare (lol pun), but fashions and market conditions change in gaming, retro or not.

To my mind rarity's entirely subjective - why should you trust a numerical one-to-ten figure from some website set up and run by dedicated collectors - people who have a vested interest in acquiring and appreciating games? Why not ask a car dealer how much their <x> model is worth?

Like it or loathe it, eBay is best for judging demand for videogames. If a game's a constant seller, you can reasonably assume your copy would sell for a reasonable price. If you've got games selling for 99p plus postage, you can guess there's little current demand for that particular title. Rarity values don't take into account demand, only scarcity.

I just don't like the idea ebay seller thisisanickname41352 can feel justified in starting out at £70 or whatever (random figure) for Alien Soldier, when the final price for other copies hovers around the £45 mark, simply because some website on the internet says it's a cool but r@re game. If everyone just bid as much as they were willing to pay for what's being sold from the start aaaargh

Value and demand are not the same as rarity. Streets of Rage 3 is probably the best example of this. A not particularly rare game that sells for a large amount. Ultimately if people didn't pay £70 for things like Alien Soldier (and I almost typed Alien Storm :daze: ) then corrupt sellers wouldn't put them on for that amount.

How rare a game is will not change dramatically, but I agree that digitpress's value guide is a long way wide of the mark.

Is Phantasy Star I rare or not? I read on a few sites that there are only 1000 copies, and other sites state that this is false. So is it rare or not?

The only Mega Drive version of Phantasy Star 1 I know of is the Japan-only release of the SMS version on a cart that boots into SMS compatability mode. I've seen one or two before, perhaps on eBay - I've never heard of only 1k copies, though.

it's not rare and if you want to buy it ask superp articles from japan it's around 40-60 $

I´ve heard of the limitation too, some people say it´s a thousand copies, some speak of threethousand.
However, it appears on ebay Germany pretty often and you can get it for less than 40,-€ if your lucky.

as ive always seen it, rarity only dictates how many are around..

as for those who dont think rarity would change a lot, think about a game like sonic.. its everywhere.. and used so often that carts are bound to die on a regular basis (if not well taken care of) every retro game is slowly in decline.. its sad really, as a company such as SEGA could probably make a mint off of a mega drive re-launch.. i know id pay $100 for fresh console, with warranty.

ultimately, the only way to judge rarity (as in number of copies) would be if someone launched a site like peeron.com for SEGA carts/ accessories.. and members of retro forums filled it in. would be pretty awesome actually.

I read that the original Phantasy Star for SMS has a bit more collector's value state-side b/c it is also the first RPG ever to be released in North America.

That's actually a great idea, Nintendo could probably pull that off as well with SNES or even N64. Sega already had a crack at selling refurbished DC's early in 2006, so if perhaps an old warehouse is discovered; filled with old Genesis then it could happen (or imagine if they found a warehouse of Saturns to sell).

nah, i dont mean finding a stock of warehoused goods...
i mean re-production.. the components must be pretty cheap, much like sony did to breath a little life into the PSx with the PSOne before the relase of the PS2.

I'm sure there are warehouses of unsold games/hardware.

I have that dream every so often, but that dream is second to my dream of finding the great parking lot in the sky... because I am such a car nut, and I have come close! I've seen pics of some of the "clouds" but not the whole parking lot. Oh wait... this was about Sega games.

*sigh*

somehow, i cant imagine finding a lost shipment of sega consoles is all that hard.. at least not if you had the money and the man power for the job.

eitherway, its probably just a lot easier to start building the consoles again.
