Which one IYO?
I'd say Gundam Wing Endless Duel. It's only 16 MEG and it really makes me wonder why Capcom and SNK 16-bit home ports were so mediocre in comparison.

Bandai seemed to be good at these 2D games. But I think it had more to with building these games for the groundup rather than simple ports.

I seriously wonder what was going through Sega's mind when they decided to pass on Yu Yu Hakusho. Yes the game was an anime game and SoA was anti-anime back then. But come on now a 4 player fighting game was unheard of back then and it's not like the Team player had a shit ton of different genre's on it.

I dont like 16 bit fighters. A lot of the good ones were Japan only and we got mostly crappy ones. I think Killer Instinct wouldnt be bad if it was an original game rather than a watered down arcade port.

Well.. engine wise, it just feels good to play,
Shame the CPU is so unfair though, but 2 players is cool.

Killer Instinct on the SNES. Sure, it was stripped down as HELL compared to the arcade version, but my buddies and I always had a blast playing this for hours at a time!

Eternal Champions. So much more original than most of the other watered down fighting game ports of the 16-bit era, especially story and character-wise. Much more of a Western style compared to the same gimmicks from Capcom and SNK. And Mortal Kombat's fighting system was always junk, and the ports were probably some of the worst ever!

True but that didn't stop SoA in regards to Fist of North Star which we all know how that turned out.

Haven't played Yu Yu Hakusho but looks like a blast esp. in 4 player!

I've spent the most time with SFII:SCE (I lived on that when it came out), plus Eternal Champions: CftDS is awesome and loaded with so many fatalities! Genesis Eternal Champions is much more limited, but has a couple great songs & stages.

Also I can't play Weaponlord on Genesis, never tried on SNES but on the Genny I could barely see what was going on; the art and colors got so muddy...

Eternal Champions. So much more original than most of the other watered down fighting game ports of the 16-bit era, especially story and character-wise.

Originality, doesn't automatically make something good. And it's plot wasn't all that original. It was essentially a less crappy Time Killers.

Mitchell, good call with VG.
Gundam looks fine but mechs are bloody boring. So it seems I'm stuck with EC. Eternal Champions is more interesting, looks, and plays better than so many with the advantage of not being an arcade downport. SF2CE lost some panache, and whilst Samurai Shodown had panache to spare the SCD still chopped it up too much though a version with either every character/stage or scaling would've murdered the competition. And by the way EC's not hard!

Not a fighting game in the likes of SF2 and MK, but a fighting game none the less. Not my favorite, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. My favorite however would be MK2 Genesis. The Matt Furnis soundtrack was the deciding factor between the SNES version and Genesis one.

I agree. I would love to play an arcade version. Tournament Fighters on the SNES is a awesome game.

Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension SFC, Yu Yu Hakusho MD, and Gundam Wing Endless duel are all great fighting games too.

It's hard to choose a single 'best' fighting game, but I still have to go with Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES since that's the game I have played the most.

Man, I've logged a ton of hours back in the day on fighters on both the SNES and Genesis, so this is hard to say. I'll admit, I never could get into the import scene at the time (I was in my early tweens/teens and funds were limited to say the least), but I did get a chance to play some... interesting fighting games over the years. As for the best one I've ever played, well my heart is with the SNES version of MKII AND SF II: SCE on the Genesis. To me, both games represent the pinnacle of the fighting genre on their respective systems. That's not to say that games like EC:CftDS, TMNT: Tournament Fighters and othesr don't have their place in fighter's history (Also another good game!) - they do - it's just that, to me, those two games really stood out over all the others.

Probably the SNES version of Super Street Fighter II (Genesis ver is not nearly as good). SNES and Genesis both have some great fighting games -- SSFII, TMNT Tournament Fighters (great game! Too bad the Genesis one was so awful, but oh well. this is great), World Heroes 2 (good port of the Neo-Geo game), on SNES, and SFIISCE (better than Turbo on SNES for sure) on Genesis. Maybe also MKII for SNES or 32X, and WeaponLord for either SNES or Genesis (I'm not sure which version of that is better). I'm not sure what else... MK1 for Sega CD perhaps? I like SNK and Capcom fighters a lot more than any of the MK games, but they are worth mentioning.

I'd also mention the SNES version of King of the Monsters 2, but it's a beat 'em up / fighting / wrestling hybrid, so it probably doesn't count. It's a solid Neo-Geo port; the Genesis game of the same name is completely different (1-on-1 fighting/wrestling only, no beat 'em up elements), and isn't as good even if it is cool that you can play as the enemy monsters too, unlike the normal game.

It's hard to point just one. So I will list the top (in terms of development/conversion job: gameplay, animation and presentation quality...) ones on the 16-bit consoles.
Some games like Samurai Spirits on MD (also the Sega Cd version that has a great gameplay but is totally butchered in the sound department) have a great engine but were butchered/heavily changed during the conversion, so I'll leave them out.

Mega Drive/Genesis:
Street Fighter II' Plus: Champion Edition (developed by Capcom) (1993)
Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden (developed by TOSE) (1994)
Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen (developed by Treasure) (1994)
WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game (developed by Sculptured Software) (1995)
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (developed by Sculptured Software/Avalanche Software) (1996)

Mega CD/Sega CD:
Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side (developed by Sega of America) (1994)

Super Famicom/Super Nintendo:
Street Fighter II (developed by Capcom) (1992)
Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden 2 (developed by TOSE) (1993)
Battle Master: Kyuukyoku no Senshitachi (developed by System Vision) (1993)
Muscle Bomber: The Body Explosion (developed by Capcom) (1994)
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (developed by Capcom) (1994)
Yuu Yuu Hakusho 2: Kakutou no Sho (developed by TOSE) (1994)
World Heroes 2 (developed by Saurus) (1994)
Mortal Kombat II (developed by Sculptured Software) (1994) --> Avoid the JP version, green blood!
Gouketuji Ichizoku (developed by Atlus) (1994) --> Avoid the US version, heavily butchered!
Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!! (developed by Data East) (1995)
Yuu Yuu Hakusho Final (developed by Namco) (1995)
Zen-Nippon Pro Wrestling 2: 3-4 Budoukan (developed by Natsume) (1995)
Killer Instinct (developed by Rare) (1995)
Super V.G. - Variable Geo (develped by TGL) (1995)
Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension (developed by TOSE) (1996)
Super Fire ProWrestling X Premium (developed by Human) (1996)
Shin Kidou Senshi Gundam W: Endless Duel (developed by Natsume) (1996)
Street Fighter Zero 2 (developed by Capcom) (1996)

PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16:
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition (developed by Capcom) (1993)

PC Engine CD/Turbo CD:
Ryuuko no Ken (developed by Alfa System) (1994)
Garou Densetsu 2: Aratanaru Tatakai (developed by Hudson) (1994)
Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Goku Densetsu (developed by Bandai) (1994)
World Heroes 2 (developed by Hudson) (1994)
Garou Densetsu Special (developed by Hudson) (1994)
Kabuki Ittou Ryoudan (developed by Hudson) (1995)

All those are good titles, great fun and showed what those machines could do.
It's so hard to choose just one 'cause I think it would be unfair... Like in 1992 nothing could be better than SFII on SFC/SNES. I don't think it's fair to compare different generations of games even in the same console. Also, the choice would be heavily influenced by my personal taste... So I prefer to list all those titles, people can play them and choose which one they prefer.

I like it for a couple reasons. Nostalgia aside it is a pretty excellent fighting game loaded with gore and wacky hidden characters. A lot of people find it to be really hard and quit playing it before they get the hang of it, but once you get a feel for it the game-play becomes pretty awesome. It has a lot of different finishers as well as the ability to do instant kills etc.

The franchise pretty much fell off the face of the earth which is a shame, I would have loved to see a sequel. A lot of fighting games came out trying to copy off of popular games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, but they usually were pretty lame with a few exceptions. EC definitely falls in that category, but the game designers probably really thought they were making a street fighter/MK killer. It has the feel of both MK and street fighter but it isn't a blatant knock off and it stays original. And most importantly it came out for SEGA, and there isn't a better version of it on the SNES for once.

SNK had a LOT of original material but it was decidedly Japanese or at least a Japanese view of an American Theme. It is really hard to be more original then the Samurai Shodown series and I doubt you could create better gameplay unless you bring up The Last Blade which is such a delicate fighter.

Story and character-wise, few series are as original as Tengai Makyou/Far East Of Eden. Which aped Samurai Spirit's gameplay for its Neo Geo entry.

It's certainly UMK3 on Sega Genesis or Super Street Fighter 2 on Sega Genesis with turbo stars.

UMK3 is less buggy than the SNES variant, and SSF2 is more complete and uncensored than the SNES variant as well, in voice effects, sprite frames, etc.
