The real-time strategy genre is huge today, but back in the early 90s, consoles were only beginning to taste the addicting tactical fun they delivered. The Genesis is fortunate to be home to some of the pioneers in the genre, including Dune II: Battle for Arrakis. Our full review (http://www.sega-16.com/Dune%20review.htm) reveals why it's just such a blast to play, even in today's market of RTS monsters like World of Warcraft.

Ok, this forum topic isn't linked right.

And damn you! I already wanted this game bad enough. Now I can't control my drool... damn!

=)

Historical note. I knew people who were dissappointed in the sequel dune 2000 b/c it was based on command and conquer rather than on dune2 =)

I always thought it was weird that they released a cart version of Dune 2 and a CD version of Dune.

Man I love this game. I enjoyed Dune 2000 because it corrected the major flaw of the Genesis version: that you couldn't lasso with the cursor to select multiple units. Dune 2000 is the ultimate evolution of the original Dune II. Some people reviewed it harshly because they wanted more than that. Well they're missing the point. This isn't Total Annihilation, or Command and Conquer Generals. It's an uncomplicated, back to basics, RTS game. You establish your base, you produce an army, you send human wave attacks against the other guy. I liked Dune 2000 better than the original Command and Conquer because it didn't have any tedious, linear, mission objective based scenarios. It was genius in its purity. There is one more problem for the Genesis version though. You can run out of spice! I haven't been able to beat this game without a game genie because of this. I was House Harkonnen on the second or third to last mission. After 2 disasterous frontal assaults against the enemy base I took time to recoup. The enemy began a massive counterattacks which I easily countered with missile and cannon fire from my lines of tanks and rocket launchers. Then we both stood fast and mined as much spice as we could. But the spice does not regenerate! So it ended up with a cold war style standoff with neither of us willing to commit to another attack.

If you like Dune you should really get Emperor. It was Westwood's first 3D RTS released in 2001, yet it recieved little to no recognition.

I think the Dune 2000 was regarded harshly because it was heavily based on C&C. I didn't play either, its just what I heard.

Dune 2000 got mixed reviews because it didn't really add anything interesting to the RTS formula. I don't know about it being 'too much like C&C' considering C&C is the result of them doing everything they wanted to have in Dune 2 but couldn't at the time.
