It's not every day that you get to play a game as an aquatic mammal, and it's actually more fun than it might sound. Ecco the Dolphin fans have known this for years, and appreciate the unique twist on the platformer genre the series represents. For more than a decade, gamers of all ages have been attracted to the series, and we've decided to honor it with the latest installment (http://www.sega-16.com/Feature-%20Ecco%20History.htm) of our History of series. Enjoy!

In 1993

It was 1992, dear, 1992. *patpat* :p

Every source I've checked says 1993.

Apparently your sources do not include the original game's box. Or uh, this. http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=201578

I was always under the assumption that the original (genny cart) came out in late '92, with the ports coming out at various points in '93.

Gamerankings' info doesnt mean much, since Appaloosa's site itself has the game released in 1996. :P

I think it was released at the end of the year, and since the box scan I found says '92, I'll change it.

Very neat article. Ecco the Dolphin is a game I've wanted to like ever since I first saw it in action, but I just can't seem to get into it regardless of how much glowing coverage I read. Oh that troublesome dolphin..

Yeah...Ecco is quite different
Probably not the best choice for a Splatterhouse fan.

The Metroid and King's Field series are favourites of mine, with both of these franchises being slower-paced with a heavy emphasis on exploration, so for all extents and purposes I should dig Ecco. I simply don't, for whatever reason. I think I'll play it again right now.

I LOVE ECCO

always have, always will, you can't take him from me! I have beaten both Ecco and Ecco ToT a bagillion times on both the Sega CD, the genny and the game gear.

I can't get enough of it! I bought these games all on release (prepurchased tides of time CD). I actually even have the games soundtracks ripped and I listen to the music all the time. I'm like uber super de dooper fan boyage and stuff like that...

Oh my. I didn't know you were into sea mammals.

Anyway, I couldn't figuire out the first 4 minutes of it. I kept dying. Wasnt part of my personal collection, and someone requested it. So its gone. :( oh well.

I remember for the first 20 minutes I played, I was wondering what the big deal was. All it seemed to be to me was an ocean simulator.

Then, I started jumping around higher and higher, then the screen exploded.

I thought I was an Ecco fan, but I don't know the half of it!

Defender of the Future, best in the series?

Oh HELL NAW!!!

You should add that it's one of the HARDEST GAMES EVER! This series is so good, yet so hard, I only beat Ecco 1 on the Genesis and the PC... the PC version is the best, cause it has like 6 pre-rendered cut scenes. oh, you forgot to add the PC version of Ecco 1!

Also, while the CD music in Ecco 1 & 2 is "higher quality", I must say that the soundtracks on the Genny versions are more "powerful".
