So, what does Sega-16 forum users think of this little title. I often find myself just laughing at it, sometimes I find it kind of fun, other times I'm thinking there's something seriously wrong with it.
One great thing about it is the two different region versions. It has a whole wacky humour around it, and it's so funny how so many people went up in arms over the Japanese version and its first boss character.
At the end of it, I am left with quite a shallow view of DJ boy, the two different versions which are like different games, it could have been much more and the idea is actually quite nifty. I am left with a 'WTF' feeling after playing it with its strange and eccentric characters, not that that is necessarily bad.
One thing I actually thought that was nice was the melodies in the music, especially the first level, the general sound of it isn't that nice though.

I don't mind it really, it's kinda funky and fun at times.

I view it as another mediocre game that's a prime candidate for forgetful oblivion.

Never played it, have heard it's tosh, it is not one I'm rushing to add to the collection.

I like it, probably because I am beat em up nutjob. The gameplay is fun enough and the graphics are mediocre, it's nothing that special, but it's not a bad game at all either.

It sounds good, but it's kind of shallow - a prime candidate for 'lazy gaming'. Plug in, insert cart, switch on, tune out :p

DJ Boy is a neat concept and an enjoyable game. My brother used to own the arcade version (which is still unemulated due to custom MCU protection), which I had a great deal of fun with. However, many characters, gameplay elements and graphics were cut for the Megadrive release, most likely to make for a smaller ROM size but also, I believe, to rush a completed version out to market.
Thankfully the story was changed for the MD release; in the arcade version, DJ Boy is out to retrieve his stolen boombox while on the MD, he's chasing after his girl. You can go and buy a boombox anywhere, but the love of your life? Now that's worth fighting for.
While the US release of the game was changed to avoid possible criticism, the removal of the introduction and ending graphical story elements has always confused the hell out of me. Without the opening sequence in which the girl gets nabbed, the US release loses any possible gameplay value.
One may notice while playing through both regional releases of the game that the story and graphical elements aren't the only changes to DJ Boy. The US and Japan releases both have different stage layouts, especially the final stage. It gives you a reason to play through both versions of the game! Excitement at its finest!

the intro story with pix is in the book
I played this game in the arcades a few times but there were always better beat-em-ups than this, if i ran out of coin i played this.

Yet noticably absent from the game itself, for no apparent reason.

Maybe the American cartridge didn't have enough mega power.
I dunno, I'd be pretty pissed off if my boom box was stolen..
