Hey, I'm new here but I've been a genesis freak forever. I just recently acquired a Sega CD 2 and I've got a couple questions about it. 1: What is the mixing port for? and 2: Sometimes the drive will make an annoying clicking sound when loading between levels in Sonic CD, I think the spinner on the lid of the cd may be a bit loose but I don't have another Sega CD as a point of reference. Is the occasional clicking normal or should I look at getting it fixed? Thanks for your input :D

Mixing port is if you have a Genesis 1, so you can hear the audio through it's RCA jacks (otherwise you only hear Sega CD sounds).. If you got a Genesis 2, don't worry about it, it's sent through the expansion port...
The clicking sound.. You must have a rev B version of the Sega CD2.. That's normal, that's the lens "focus".. I wondered about it too, so I took it apart and inspected it, it's the focus.. (it does it because every time the laser stops reading for a second, the focus coil shuts off)

I've heard that the mixing port gives Mega Drive I stereo sound if you also use the RCA-jacks. You always hear both sounds when the Mega CD is attached. But only in mono if the mixing or headphone jack isn't used.

My Sega CD must be that revision too with the clicking noise as the focus turns off.

this isn't true, it's misinformation..
If the mixing cable isn't used, the headphone port on the Genesis will have stereo Sega CD sound.. the mixing cable is only there so you can reroute the sound to the RCA jacks, as the Genesis lacks an audio out on it's expansion port (which the genny 2 has)

Explain again what isn't true (yes, I am dumb).

It isn't true, that without the mixing cable, you can't get stereo sega CD sound...
Sega Genesis Model 1 Expansion Port Features:
Stereo Audio Input
Sega Genesis Model 2 Expansion Port Features:
Stereo Audio Input
Stereo Audio Output
Because of the above, the RCA jacks on the Sega CD, with a model 2, would be fine.. However, with a model 1 Genesis, you'd only hear the PCM and CD Audio from the Sega CD.. The mixing cable essentially disables the RCA jacks on the Sega CD, and re-routes it to the mixing jack input... (in other words, all you really need to do is attach the stereo directly to the Genesis headphone ports)

Hm I wasn't quite clear in my statement. You can of course get stereo sound for the Mega CD through the RCA jacks, but if you don't use the mixing cable then it will be mono for the Mega Drive sounds. And yes, using the headphone jack is the easiest way to obtain the godly Stereo Sound. Joe Redifer taught me that.

you don't get mono megadrive sounds from the RCA jacks, at all.. it doesn't happen: because I explained why: Genesis 1 expansion connector has NO audio out, NON at all...
there is MIS information going around on this subject..

I didn't say you get mono Mega Drive sound from the RCA jacks. Those jacks belong to the Mega CD. If you don't use the mixing cable (or the headphone jack for speakers etc.) the Mega Drive sounds will be regular mono, even if the RCA jacks are used for the Mega CD.

but megadrive 1 sound is in stereo if you steal it from the headphone jack and just go directly to the stereo system..
sometimes i hate having a 9-pin mini DIN modded Genesis 1...

What I believe Zebbe is trying to say is that you must have something routed out of the Genesis/Mega Drive 1 headphone jack NO MATTER WHAT to obtain stereo sound. Whether you use the mixing jack or not, something will be hooked to the headphone jack if you are hearing stereo.

my next mod: To make the expansion connector have stereo sound..

Haha, Sorry my little question cause such a big debate. I'm just getting back into collecting sega stuff so I'm a little rusty when it comes to this stuff, for example I still use RF for video :Panda:

Hey, I recently fixed the problem by taking some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to the CD lens for a period of about 4 minutes. Not only did it eliminate the clicking sound but it also made load times a bit quicker. Thanks again! :D
