Is it as bad as everyone says on teh internets? Or is this one of those games that just has an unfairly bad rep that's perpetuated online by people who never even played this thing? Comments? Experiences?

It's revoltingly gory. Like some corporal fire hydrant.

I think this one was very unfairly trashed. The only reason I can find for the bad reviews is that they didn't like the storyline. Golden Axe Beast Rider is a true 3D Action Game, it doesn't need no stinking story. Beware though, naked dead bodies are strewn about in the first act quite liberally.
Here's my review of the game.

The action's decent but level design is dull and drags on. It's not a bad game but disappointing for a revival of the franchise.

What a well written review, the battle systems seems a lot different than most 3D action titles,I might look into it now.

I used to soak this kind of thing up like booze to a whino, and I have to gear myself up to play Beast Rider. But I have the same problem with Virtua Fighter 5.

seath the game is tripe imo, maybe not yours but in mine it is and I say that as a fan of the series and SEGA . Like with SEGA Rally Revo it was a rather poor update to a classic .

I enjoyed Sega Rally Revo too, certainly more than most other modern racers.

You need to remember, TA has put every Saturn and Dreamcast game on a pedestal as high as the Moon, nothing can ever match their greatness in his eyes. Therefore every new Sega game is trash to him.

I am a very big fan of Golden Axe and I would give this game a 1/10. It has nothing to do with Golden Axe and is very boring in addition to being very sloppy a game.
Call it Woman Warrior and you would never know it was related to Golden Axe. Name only.

Well, in regard to the Saturn racers especially, I think this might not be too far from the truth. ;)
But I still enjoyed Sega Rally Revo, even though one of my buddies hates it because it's "too sim". Golden Axe Beast Rider is just an unsung group fighting pioneer in a market built around franchises and story games.

Yeah, but that's following Sega Rally 2. Rally 2 was like taking the common perception how bad Golden Axe 3 is multiplied by how bad all Ridge Racer actually is. So for coming after Rally 2 it's not too bad; it's also a big improvement over GT on Xbox, which was so lacklustre it might as well have belonged to that other GT series.

Team Andromeda strikes again :p
Saturn Games are Beast
I stand by my review. The only thing Golden Axe about this game is the name.

I knew something was wrong when I first came across a review of this game! Tyris Flare looks nothing like her 16 bit version of herself. Having said that, since it is a game based that takes place within the Golden Axe universe, I can see myself eventually picking this game up.

The game does not even make sense. For example, it takes place prior to Golden Axe 1, yet the 'turtle titan' is already dead and rotted in a desert. The game is officially retarded and not part of the story. It is made by a bunch of talentless hacks in California that know nothing about the series.
One funny part is when the gnomes steal your pots. It plays their classic music, but on top of the current level music, so it all jumbles together into nonsensical noise. The music is also so low you can barely hear it.

Well, if I can find it for less than 5 smackaroos, it's a sale. I wanna see how utterly retarded it is! :p

What the hell are you on about ? I don't even the my DC that much , quite frankly love the X-Box far more and SEGA Rally Revo a sim lol . SEGA Rally Revo is no sim (not even close) and its not even a good Arcade racer (which is what SEGA Rally is) The tracks are far too long for starters (for an Arcade type racer) and the alternating/dynamic tracks means that no 2 laps are ever the same - which would be great for some other racers , not SEGA Rally where the series was built up on trying get 1/100th of a second of your time, that it what so good about true Arcade racers like Rally 1 and II and Out Run II
So its an epic fail and there's not even a Replay mode . SEGA Arcade Team should have handled a Arcade version and then given it to the consumer Team to port it home, that the magic mix for SEGA Rally . SEGA Rally 2006 had some of the same issues
About Golden Axe Beast Rider . The game series is famous and known for its Co-Op so to make it single player only was a horrendous cock up there and then. Then to fill the game with some of the dullest combat , piss poor graphics, god awful sound just made the deal worse, more so when you have the likes of DMC IV, Ninja Gaiden II ect all coming out. Golden Axe is a series best left to the 1990's

So basically you don't like Sega Rally Revo because you put Sega Rally 1 and 2 on such a high pedestal that nothing can beat them, correct?

Did you not see Out Run II - There's an Arcade racer every bit as good as Rally 1 and II. When in comes to Arcade racers nobody does it better than SEGA Japan AM Dept .
For the home PGR 3 and the likes of Dirt 2, Blur are just much better than Revo.

So does Tyris go rally racing later in the game? I gave up less than half-way in.

No, but there are some really cool beast scenes toward the end. Including one super beast boss fight that you end up riding.
