Sony PS4 “Orbis” Set to Support 4K Resolution Games, But Will Drop Support for Current Titles.
Sony PlayStation 4 to Drop Compatibility with PlayStation 3, Used Games – Report
[03/28/2012 03:31 PM]
by Anton Shilov

Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation video game system is reportedly code-named Orbis and is projected to be very powerful. But the new console, which is expected to be out in 2013, will not play currently available games and will lose compatibility with used games in general.

Based on what is currently known about the PlayStation 4 is that it is based on a microprocessor and a graphics processing unit (GPU) designed by Advanced Micro Devices. Apparently, those chips will be powerful enough to support video games in 4096*2160 (4K) resolution and video games in stereo-3D mode in 1920*1080 (1080p) resolution, according to a report from Kotaku web-site.

Since there are not a lot of 4K screens at the moment, the next-generation PlayStation “Orbis” appears to be intended for games that will shine starting from several years down the road. Apparently, the PlayStation 4 may be an even more ambitious endeavor than the PlayStation 3 in case of capabilities. But at the same time it is expected that its development will not be as expensive as that of the PS3.

But the PS3 will have a number of compromises: it will not be compatible with PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 titles and it will not be exactly friendly with pre-owned/used games. Apparently, each particular Blu-ray game disc will be tied to a particular PSN account. A good thing is that if a disc becomes obsolete, the system should allow digital download, which means that it will sport a pretty large hard drive.

An indirect confirmation to the fact that Orbis game console from Sony does exist in plans is that SCE’s developer web-site already knows the name and orbis.scedev.net leads to the front-page of the SCE DevNet web-site, something that does not happen in case of a random name.

It is presently expected that the PlayStation 4 “Orbis” is on track for release for the holiday season in late 2013.

Sony Computer Entertainment did not comment on the news-story.

If the "no used games" thing is accurate, that would cancel any interest I would've had in the system, regardless of any other factor. However, there were rumors of the same thing for PS3, and it never happened, so we'll see.

While I do believe that the name Orbis is correct, for a variety of reasons, I doubt much of the other stuff. A) We're years off before 4k resolution TVs enter the consumer market, and B) If current consoles can't even support true 1080p for most games, how in the fuck does anybody expect them to support 4k resolutions?

Finally, even though you didn't post them, the sketches of the patent images relating to Orbis are hilarious if only for how outstandingly ugly everybody in the drawing is. Why did they make those girls look so extremely ugly lol

By 2014, I'm going to be sitting back in my couch with beer at hand; laughing my ass-off at the idiocy that is console-based one-time-licencing-per-purchased-game and its utter failure at large.

Remove the ability to... No, fuck selling it....just gifting a used game to someone else, and you're left with a useless platform that no one will see the need to buy. It's clunky, it needs a controller, it needs to be plugged-in to your TV (either literally or wirelessly), it needs to be plugged-in to your wall socket (literally or exponentially more expensively-so with internal batteries), You need to buy each and every game that comes-out at full MSRP (by which time, most of which will be downloadable-only titles), you won't physically own over 75% of your own games, you'll find-out that computer-based gaming is pretty much the same fucking thing, you'll have no need to buy a dedicated home console (b/c by that time, all computers will be able to link to your own TV wirelessly, gaming-wise)... you get the point.

A part of me loves the fact that their greed may make their product obsolete.

Really, how long before the Playstation name is just a brand like Vaio except you get a fancy controller or sensor/camera thingy?

It already is. Any android device which meets the minimum specs can become a licensed Playstation Suite certified device.

It will have the capability to support that resolution, but I believe it has more to do with running 3 monitors (with stereoscopic 3D) with one PS4. Sony was making claims that the PS3 could run on 2 monitors at 1080p, before it launched.

The rate at which technology is advancing is totally mind-boggling! I had no idea there were 4k resolution televisions in existence! So let's say I am watching an episode of "House" on one of these fancy schmancy television screens. And let's say I then decide to pause the recorded show. Will I be able to count every single nose hair sticking out of Hugh Laurie's nostril? If so, forget about video games! For me, this would be a fun activity in and of itself!

Ah! Counting Hugh Laurie's nose hairs! I think I would get a kick out of that! :p

QFT

I buy the majority of my games used, and only a scant few new. If true, I've bought my last Sony console.

Used games is one of the reasons to buy a game on a console, over the PC. You buy a PC game, you're pretty much stuck with it. You buy a console game, you can trade it in towards another title.

I don't follow the console industry now and my interest in following said industry waned around the 6th generation. Looks like I'm not missing anything but bs. I'll be sticking with the PC.

No BC is bad enough(it would be understandable if it wasn't using the Blu-ray format, but since it is, there's no reason what so ever, for it to not be BC with atleast PS3 games, It's clear they are running a mini scam here. They want to force people to rebuy a game they already payed for), but to not allow used games to work, is outragious, and drastically hurts the industry(along with Sony's profit margin, Sony's decions make no sense at all).

How dumb could the CEO be, to basically say, if you don't buy a PS4 when it first comes out, and buy every game the instance it hits the shelves, you can't play the games.

Must I point out how many games go unheard of, until the publisher stops printing the games. It's like Sony is trying to lose money(are they planning to beg the government for a bailout or something, seeing how Sony has forgotten how to make money, that's the only way they are gonna get dough).

There is a silver lining however, this move will end Sony, and will hurt, if not cripple Game Stop as well, which when the dust clears, will be great for the industry as a whole.

According to the rumor, this is using an x86 CPU. That's a pretty fucking huge reason right there for it not to be backwards compatible, and moving away from Cell is a good thing.

Sony isn't an American company.

Unless publishers+hardware companies conspired to enforce "no used games" (as such) across the board, I can't see that concept really taking off for non-DLC content. (as it will promote publishers/platforms that don't enforce such restrictions)

I just don't know what to think anymore. I don't want to sound like a luddite, but from all rumors the next-generation consoles seem like utter garbage and I don't see any reason to buy them.

As is my PS3 and 360 already get a much smaller amount of play time compared to anything else, and this is the first time I've had to buy a current generation console (the 360) multiple times because of shoddy manufacturing.

Check out the big brain on xelement5x

Luddite

The Luddites were a social movement of 19th-century English textile artisans who protested – often by destroying mechanized looms – against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their way of life. The movement was named after General Ned Ludd or King Ludd, a mythical figure who, like Robin Hood, was reputed to live in Sherwood Forest.

Sony got "infected" when they bought BGM - the parasites in the music industry spread rapidly through Sony, and now all divisions are run the same as the music division.
