Hey, I bought a Sega CD knowing that I wanted Sonic CD, Panic and Snatcher. Snatcher is a little out of my price range right now, so I was wondering if there were any other killer titles you could recommend? I was considering Night Trap just for the goofy 90's acting. :p

Ecco..
oh, and get the Japanese version of Sonic CD... the music is better, im right now listening to the tunes on itunes..
(to play the JAP sonic CD on an american Sega CD, you'll need to rip it, repair it, and re-burn it, with american boot code..)
probably too much for you to do though...

If you like the Shining Force games for Mega Drive, get the CD version too.

I did that and it worked great for me. :)

i would prefer not to.. i would prefer ONE single CD..
and anyway, that only works for Sonic CD.. my method works for-----anything..

There are a few games that won't boot properly when you swap the region code on the disc. I've tried just about every Japanese Mega CD game available using this method in my Sega CD and some just don't cooperate.

which games? i want to try something.. i have a technique i want to try.. (using sega loader, and literally loading a Japanese BIOS via "software" programming..
it "might" just work.. and once the US BIOS boots, you can flick the genesis into JAP mode.. that's what I want to try.
This uses "shadowing", something not normally done on the Genesis.. i want to try it though, am curious..

For a more economic way of getting cheesy 90's acting get Double Switch (Similar to Night Trap) and Ground Zero Texas. If you have a 32X connected get Corpse Killer and Slam City, but be warned that Slam City is extremely difficult.

To be quite honest I don't really remember since I threw those CDRs out. I know Earnest Evans didn't work too well (the music would cut out sometimes) but the game played. If I saw a list of all Mega CD games I might be able to pick and choose a few.

I slightly prefer the Japanese track (and greatly prefer for the first stage and title), but I feel the track lengths on both are waaaay too short.

i think it's partially due to them not having CDs back then, that were that big in capacity.. i noticed there always seems to be a 500MB limit on the old consoles (and i think that is due to there being a limit on CD capacity)
these days, you can even find an 800MB CD, though rare..

Every 80 minute CD is 800MB. They say 700MB on them, though. But 80 minutes of music is over 800MB.

i think that theory is flawed..

an old screenshot of mine..
notice the size of the CD, 730MB.. that's 72 minutes of audio, along with the 300 something MB data portion.. the math just don't add up..

nevermind, i call back that statement, Nero must have been wrong..
for every minute in Red Book, it's about 10 MB.. so Joe is correct...

Yeah, when I make custom CDs, I just put raw AIFF files into a folder. Once that folder reaches 800MB I burn an audio CD. I wonder why it will only accept around 700MB of data, though? If you try to put more than 700MB of non-audio data, it won't let you.

remember though, CD audio isn't AIFF ;) only Macs add that extension, red book is red book...
i think the reason for the lack of 100MB, is for the File System.. I think that's what it is..

I know, and it isn't WAV either, but both WAV and AIFF at 16-bit 44100Hz stereo take up the same amount of space as LPCM (which is what Red Book is) at that rate. There is very little actual difference between the formats with the exception of the way they are stored, etc. I doubt the 1's and 0's of the actual audio data is any different.

waiting for sonic cd, wolfchild, spiderman vs kingpin(had this on cart but can't find it) and eternal champions to arrive.
got all off of ebay
I've been having a lot of fun playing Mighty Mighty Missile, released more recently by Good Deal Games (www.gooddealgames.com). It's both a mutli-player game (up to four players) or a strategy game. I bought all the titles released by GDG for the Sega CD, and this is easily the best one. At some point I'd like to get around to posting reviews for all those games on this site.
Also, if you're looking for party games, besides the above mentioned, check out Bouncers. The box claims it's one or two players, but if you hook-up a multi-tap and set it on 'Multi,' well, you can all-of-a-sudden play with four people at once. It's a 'basketball' game, but seeing as players are balls and there are no atheletes, it's not your average boring sports game.
I say both of these are party games because they allow up to four players and have a very low learning curve.

WOLFCHILD!!
just ace! so basic, quite easy, but just soooo nice to play!
i never played this one before but just has that amiga 500 with extra 1MB feel of goodness. plus there's the awful story scenes (not that bad, but the disc access times are horrendous) and characters- and the altered beast werewolf sound rip every time you change in to the wolf man (you'd think more people would mention that)- cheesey as hell but i'm lovin it- everyone should have this!
sonic cd- i have to say, i'm quite disappointed by this one. everyone raves about sonic cd so much. the main sprite looks too big- the early level backgrounds are-well crappy and the music seek on the disc is too slow. everything else is classic sonic, but even the main 'jump' sound effect seems like a low quality sample from the original game.
spiderman vs kingpin on the other hand? Wow!! i had this on cartridge but lost it years ago- was one of my faves. i can't believe the game is presented so differently. i expected the usual cart port with some cd music added but it's just so much more! the city map level navigation, nicer graphical touches all round and slightly different feeling to the controls make for a better game-or at the very least a different one. add to that the cheese-em-up cock rock soundtrack and this was well worth the £10 i paid for it!!
edit:though there is web fluid everywhere and you don't have to take pics to earn money for it-which is actually a shame!

Games I would Reccomend:
Rise of the Dragon: Very nice point and click adventure, gritty cyber punk tone. Can be found cheap too. A possible alternative to those who can't seem to get a copy of the much more pricey snatcher.
Android Assault: Fun 2d shooter with a good level of difficulty. The last level gets pretty frantic, and I enjoyed the soundtrack to this one.
Time Gal: If you want to try out some of the full motion video games, this is a nice anime styled one. I find it more fun then revenge of the ninja, but then again the main character in this one is a bikini clad anime chick....
The Terminator: Just bought this one today, but it's got an awesome soundtrack and the game play is quite fun.
I also just picked up Dracula Unleashed today. If you are looking for cheesy full motion video, this and double switch should do the trick for ya :p

id say if you can track down the "sega 4 in 1" or "5 in 1" do that

Time Gal and Mansion of Hidden Souls are pretty cool, if you like FMV. The latter is sort of like 7th Guest or Resident Evil. Robo Aleste is a good shooter. Haven't played it enough to decide if it's as good as MUSHA. Dungeon Explorer didn't seem as good as the PC Engine versions, however Rise of the Dragon is good -- better than the silent IBM-PC original (can't remember if they had the voice work in a different edition for the PC, but with Willy Beamish, stay away from the Sega CD version! The load times are almost as bad as Sonic on the 360). Oh, another great game to get is Silpheed. I love that one!

Continuing from my last post....
The Terminator (different levels, art, music and everything from the Genesis version) is the best action game on the Sega CD. It's not GREATNESS, but it's pretty good.
Revenge of the Ninja is cool if you like Road Avenger/Blaster FX and Time Gal, or games like Dragon's Lair. If you don't like games like Dragon's Lair, well then stay away. It was called Ninja Hayate in Japan. I think there's a Saturn version (as with these other laser titles), but they tend to go for more.

Oh yeah, and I recommend Night Trap. Just don't pay a lot or you'll feel gyped. Hell, don't pay a lot for any of these. :)

i agree with just about everything stalepie just said. That is a cool assortment of games, and most of those can be easily had for 10 bucks or under:D

It's all about Terminator and Third World War.
The best games I can think of when I owned mine:
Sonic CD
Ground Zero Texas
Dragons Lair
Black Hole Assault
Jaguar XJ220
Robo Aleste
The bad ones:
Prince of Persia
Afterburner 3
Symos

I recomend seeing the infamous Night Trap for yourself and making your own mind about it.

Earthworm Jim Special Edition.
NHL 94 (no kidding, the best hockey game ever made)
Vay, Lunar games, Shining force, Dark Wizard, D&D Eye of the Beholder
I like Terminator, Night Trap, Ground zero texas, Sewer shark, Ecco, Eternal champions, Sonic CD and probably more I can't think of right now
Just though of two more:
Silpheed and keio flying squadron.

The only game I REALLY like on the system is Snatcher, aside from that, I'd recommend Rise Of The Dragon also.
Never played those two...

Sherlock Holmes, Jaguar XJ220, NBA Jam, Rage In The Cage and Spiderman vs Kingpin are amongst my faves. Cheap too!
I recently picked up Sonic Gems Collection for GameCube.
It has Sonic CD on it, which makes it the first time I've owned (or played even) the game.
I've read some pretty scathing reviews online about it, but it might actually be my favorite Sonic game ever. I can't seem to put it down when I play it-- it has a certain attraction the other 16-bit Sonics lack. I thought I beat it the other day after like Zone 8 or something but then it kept on going. It seems people either love it or hate it, although personally I can't see what's not to like. I've also read the Japanese version has a better soundtrack. I can only assume the version on the Gems Collection is the US version, but I really really like the music anyway. I can't imagine it being much better.
Except for the title song. What the fuck was SEGA thinking?

My only complaint with Sonic CD is that the end boss comes straight out of Zone 3 (Act??) - there's no 'HOLY FUCK ENDBOSS!' moment other than the music change.

I recommend these:
Lethal Enforcers
Final Fight
Lords of Thunder
Mad Dog McCree
Prince of Persia
Fatal Fury Special (AMAZING port! 99% identical to the original Neo Geo version!)
Rise of the Dragon
The Terminator
Demolition Man
Microcosm
Starblade (simple but fun shooter from Namco)
Those are just some off the top of my head. There's some others I can't think of right now. I remember being SO psyched when I finally got Robo Aleste. I really had high hopes for it, because I heard lots of good things about the game, plus Compile developed it! But, sadly, when I finally played it, I was dissapointed.

I'd recommend Silpheed, Ecco the dolphin and Ecco The Dolphin - Tides Of Time. Also, Earthworm Jim Special Edition is great.

How can no one recommend Popful Mail? Unless I missed it of course... But this is probably one of the best platformers I've ever played. If you want more than Sonic this is definitely one to check out.
