Yes, it's not an April Fools prank, it's true. GoldenEye has a Speccy emu (with games, even) hidden in its code.

The story goes that some guys at Rare wanted to see if the N64 could emulate the machine, and put it on GoldenEye since it was the most recent project in development there. It worked pretty well. They were then about to remove it before release, but decided not to and disabled any way of accessing it from the game itself. Nobody except those at Rare knew of its existence.

Fast forward to March 2012, when a hacker and Rare fan (I think) by the name of Zoinkity disassembled the game's rom and found the emulator and games in the code. He then patched it up to enable access to the emulator itself and to do some fixes (namely enabling the Kempston joystick option in every game by default) and released it onto the net.

Gotta say it's pretty interesting. Here's a vid of it in action with Cookie, Jetpac and Lunar Jetman:

That's too funny. Too bad you have to patch the rom to access it. Very cool, though. + rep!

Wait let me get this straight, while creating one of the greatest FPS of all time(not some random POS), they had time to put a emulator in the code to screw around with, and for some unknown reason, they left it in there.

Now don't get me wrong, It's common for developers to screw around, but what doesn't make sense, is why they didnt just use a backup prototype chip/cart instead of puting it into the working prototype( Lol wtf, where they drunk/high when they did this).

Is there any decent N64 emulator that plays most all games? Is it easy to get working? I don't need roms, or looking for any, just an emulator. Thank you.

I'd suggest Project64, since it has the highest compatibility.

Now that, is cool. Just in time for April Fools Day too! A day best celebrated with at least one mindblowing discovery that is in fact true. :D

Yes they did. Originally the company was called "Ultimate Play the Game", and then later just Ultimate (I think). As for the name Rare (and later Rareware), I only recall that moniker being adopted when Rare started doing games on the NES.

Going by interviews and stuff, UPtG sounded like an absolute nightmare to work at. All 7 days of the week were spent working and the only holiday was I think just one day during Christmas...

Correct, Rare never made any computer games under that name. The final Ultimate game was released after the first Rare game, though.

Maybe they were planning some kind of "play our old games in-game" thing (like you could play Maniac Mansion in Day of the Tentacle) because didn't RARE start out on the speccy?

Yea, I suppose that's a possibility, and is a logical theory at very least.
