Hmm probably Snatcher or Popful Mail.
I had splatterhouse 2, but I sold it. I deidnt' like it much. Rarist is between Phantasy star II and GhoulsN ghosts, both complete.

The Rarest game I have is either Herzog Zwei, Phantasy Star II, Warsong or Romance of the Three kingdoms III.
Definitely Panorama Cotton and Monster World IV.

I really don't know what is all that rare actually.
Panorama Cotton I know is really rare.. this I do not own.
Herzog Zwei is rare... I didn't know that, well Im happy I own that then.
I know I own some games I never see anyone else with, but then they just aren''t all that good. For instance the game "shove it". Some puzzle game dealing with sliding boxes around a factory room and into designated spots. I have never seen the game before except in my collection.
among other quasi rare games as I never see anyone around my town with them even when the genny was big are: Landstalker, Shadowrun, Global Gladiators, but I wouldn't consider them all that rare.
Now my Sega CD and Saturn I do own some rather rare games including Draclua X, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and just about every Working Designs game.

I wouldn't say any of my Genesis games are really rare, but Skeleton Krew and Traysia are fairly uncommon. My Sega CD collection is limited to the common, except perhaps for Panic!.
Several of the games mentioned aren't rare at all IMO.

I'm not sure how rare it is, but I have a complete, mint copy of MUSHA.
Thats an R7(from 1-10), so thats considered rare IMO. I have one of those sweet babies as well :D
I have quite a few R6 and R7 Genesis games....nothing over that though...finding R8 and above in the wild is nigh impossible, if you land something like that then Hallelujah!
Along with MUSHA I have Alex Kidd Enchanted Castle, 4 KOEI games(most KOEI stuff is rare), Master of Monsters, Battle Squadron.

Battle Squadron.. I can't stand Battle Squadron. I'm missing the clamshell case for my copy, but it's not a game I care about at all so no matter.
Of the Genesis games in my current possession, the rarest (all clocking in at a 5 for rarity, according to Digital Press) are Battle Squadron, Bubble and Squeak, Fighting Masters, Rock 'n Roll Racing, and Toki: Going Ape Spit.

2 sealed copies of action 52 (R7)
1 sealed copy of herzog zwei
BTW all are available for trade :D
Battle Squadron.. I can't stand Battle Squadron. I'm missing the clamshell case for my copy, but it's not a game I care about at all so no matter.
Battle Squadron was one of the early EA games, and didn't have a clamshell case. It was released in the U.S. with that nasty cardboard box Budokan had.

Herzog Zwei is probably my rarest one. I also have Alex Kidd in the enchanted castle. I didn't know that one was rare. I was also wondering about the rarity of devilish since i've only seen one copy of it in person before(which I bought).

My rarest ones are
Zero: The Kamikazee Squirrel(R7)
GleyLancer?
Crusader of Centy(R6)
Warsong(R6)
on a side note Digitpress.com considers M.U.S.H.A. an R5
lordofduct
08-08-2005, 06:29 AM
Yeah... but the only American released games to get an R6 or higher are 26 games out of a giant archive. An R5 is rather notable then in consideration.
and only 7 of those games are an R7 or higher! 5 get an R7... 1 R8 and only 1 R9.
(this is only for US released games, not international nor prototypes nor hardware parapheral)
And those games that score R7 are kinda crappy too.
Action 52
Aero the Acro-Bat 2
Aerobiz: Supersonic
The Battle of Jericho
Zero: The Kamikazee Squirrel

I haven't checked DP's new online only rarity guides. I still have the PDF version for the Genesis which is a couple years old now and I was referring to that, and it says R7. They must have changed it. I wonder how they decide things like that. The PDF version has Battle Squadron listed as R6 too...I wish DP would have kept the old PDF style, I liked being able to just download the new PDF's and check stuff without having to go to their website.

Sega CD: The Lawnmower Man (R6) In low demand for a reason Got it for $5.00

M.U.S.H.A
Fire Mustang (Japan, but it's not all that rare)

I can tell you that Alex Kidd isn't very rare. Not as you are lead to beleive.
I think MUSHA is the only rare game left I want, everything else I want is common in the wild or easily found on ebay.

Musha is rare? Weird. I have that... complete. I also just won Zany Golf (complete and in excellent condition) for $5. Yes, $5. I thought that game was an R6,465,784,545,655. Actually I don't really understand the whole "R" scale. I'm pretty sure it's just a "best guess" scale. BC Racers being rare is what makes me think the "R scale" is pure crap.
Kikoskia
05-31-2006, 10:36 PM
Well, I don't think M.U.S.H.A is rare persay. I just value it in my collection.
The R scale works based on how easy it was for them to attain a copy. Normy's being a R7 means it is very hard to get ahold of and thus rare.
In an example, I got my copy for £1.50. A month later a copy was sold on eBay for £22, with a lot of bids.

Becuase very few bought the game when it was released. It was a launch game, which would you choose between AK, Revenge of Shinobi, Super Thunder Blade, Rambo III, Last Battle, Space Harrier II, Forgotten Worlds, Truxton....just by judging the screenshots on the back of the box?
Personally, I wouldn't choose Alex Kidd.
Genesisdoes
06-01-2006, 03:19 PM
For all that listed Phantasy Star II, it's not that rare, digital press says its a 2. It is in high demand though because it's an rpg. I got it from a guy at the classic gaming expo for $5 complete :-)

Starflight is rare? Wow, even more glad I own it now.
Other than that, yeah, Herzog Zwei I suppose is percieved rare, and my complete Gunstar Heroes isn't really rare but it's one of those ones that people like to say is to get more money. I also have Theme Park which I think was an R4 last time I checked I don't remember.
I guess my rarest game is Crusader of the Centy.

(Updated 12/7/07)
My rarest is a loose Joshua & The Battle Of Jericho, which is a 7 on DP, and appears to be the rarest Wisdom Tree game in the database. I got it for 63 cents when GameStop was clearing out Genny stuff at 30% off the original price (it was mismarked with a tag for Cal Ripkin Jr. Baseball at 89 cents).
After that, I have a couple games that are 6's on DP: CrossFire and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure.
As for stuff that's not rare but seems to be highly sought after, I have Herzog Zwei (found a cart only copy for $2.50!), TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Fire Shark, Pirates! Gold, Toe Jam & Earl, and non-majesco versions of Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania Bloodlines.

Did you do that because the quality of the game and everything in it sucks extremely bad and is worse than the Sega CD version (which can be ascertained only a few seconds after pressing START) or did the gameplay frustrate you when you couldn't win?

Not yet, but once it is sold out it should go up like a rocket.
Remember, It´s only got 600 copies...
Besides that my rarest games are Landstalker and Probotector (both PAL, rated R5), but I don´t think that´s correct since Landstalker is sold for about 10,-€ on ebay Germany all the time and Story of Thor is R5 too, but even cheaper on ebay. For Starflight, an R4-game, you don´t get more than 5,-€ usually...

Panzer Dragoon Saga got 30,000 copies and you know what the demand is like for it. Somehow, though, I don't think that Beggar Prince will ever be that expensive, even at such a tiny print run.

But considering the number of people here who say they also own it, I'm beginning to wonder about the accuracy of their "rarity" rating system. I own a copy of Pirates! Gold (with box but NO booklet), which I've always believed to be much rarer.
And, frankly, I'd gladly trade my copy of Alex Kidd for a copy of Ristar.

Depends on how you define rare. If not rare, these are at least on high demand or has a low run:
Alien Soldier
Bare Knuckle III
Beggar Prince
Daze Before Christmas
Eliminate Down
Elitserien 95
Elitserien 96
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Monster World IV
Panorama Cotton
Phantasy Star IV
Pulseman
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Snow Bros.
Twinkle Tale
I can't say I have anything rare... all are pirate carts which don't count.... Duke3D is probably not rare, since its probably mass produced in Brazil... One that might fit into the category is the original Japanese updated Sonic 1 cart that has water ripples and wavy/much more multilayer backgrounds and stuff like that... as far as I know, the updated version was released only in Japan... but I don't think its rare...

AFAIK, the JP version was released later, and that is why it has those effects. The updated JP version lets you be invisible for a few seconds when you fall on spikes, so you don't die immediately when touching them again.
I remember getting killed when falling on spikes... but I may be wrong... must re-check.

AFAIK, the JP version was released later, and that is why it has those effects. The updated JP version lets you be invisible for a few seconds when you fall on spikes, so you don't die immediately when touching them again. There are two JP versions. The first one (and probably most common) has the new graphics but still has the spike bug. I have this one. I'm under the impression it's not particularly rare (except for in the States, I guess). The second (actually Sonic 1 V3) has both the added background / ripple effects and the spike bug fixed. This one is harder to find because there's no way to tell it from the box / cart. You have to play it and go jump on some spikes. It's always annoyed me that Sega insists on using the crap US version on every compilation.
As for my rarest, it'd have to be my flux cart, which is an R7. Everything else I have just about grows on trees as far as I know.

I don't know how rare, but expensive games I have for genesis are alien soldier, Panorama Cotton, Twinle Tale, Gley Lancer, Rockman Mega World, Yu Yu Hakyusho, Fire Shark, Fire Mustang, Pulseman, Contra HC, herzog zwei, the Monster Worlds, Slap Fight, the Mega Cart, doraemon 7 gozansu, Musha, Steele Empire, Undead Line (which is underated on here gameplay wise) etc. Thats the ones that come to mind right now, Im looking for eliminate down and snow bros right now. I feel like a jerk because a while ago I got into a serious bidding war on Ebay for Eliminate down, I wanted it so bad but this dude apparently felt the same way because we went back and forth. I think it ended up like 300 or more dollars. Everytime I looked for it after that it was going for like 300 dollaz, so I think my greed single handedly made this game exorbitantly priced! :( It was funny cuz right after that someone mentioned it on these forums and I laughed my a** off! :) I have some Laserdisk games for my Pioneer Laseractive which utilize built in sega cd that are rare like Rocket Coaster and Hyperion which are awesome! Space Berzerker is alright, haven't played it much yet. Herzog Zwei is supposed to be great but I have the Jap version and can't read the text so haven't been able to figure out gameplay yet. ox15E, I didn't know there was a updated sonic one in Japan, might have to track that down. Yeah its one of those games that get bought then resold all the time. So it seems more common than it is as it appears on ebay so often, as people sell it on when they need money/get bored of it. Streets of Rage 3, at least here in the UK, has the same issue.

Hmm. My brother parted his out on Ebay made a killing. I guess its an example of a game that may not be super rare but the demand had driven up the value. Rare or not it is not an easy or should I say cheap game to get a hold of around here.

ox15E, I didn't know there was a updated sonic one in Japan, might have to track that down. Is it rare or expensive? It's a little hard to find / expensive if you're looking on the US eBay. You'd probably be better off going through a Yahoo Japan proxy like Shopping Mall Japan (http://www.shoppingmalljapan.com). They're pretty common there. I think mine, complete but in obviously used condition, was $20-$25 or so, shipped, through a used game store I found on eBay US (before I knew about SMJ).
Ive been wanting one for a while now when I listen to music on sega cd. Is it alright? If you run across one for a reasonable price, it's worth having, IMO. I posted a demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oswpqv22TIg) of it up on YouTube. There was a good bit of detail lost during the capture / encoding but you can get a pretty good idea of what it looks like. It's actually pretty impressive, considering the hardware limitations.
And Megacart had a low production run, I guess that counts too.I hadn't really considered that, but yeah, I bet those things will be pretty hard to come by in a couple years.

Before I check DigitPress for my entire games collection, I am curious. Are R0 titles common? The description is a little vague.
Rainbow Islands for the Genesis is listed as R0, but I have it...
Also - can anyone recommend a good, flexible database for storing information for one's media collection (books, movies, games, magazines, ...)? With most desktop applications I was rather disappointed, so I am currently contemplating to simply set up a personal wiki for that...

R0 basically means unrated. So it could be rare, or it could be common. No data. There's a lot of R0's in the Japanese imports because there's a lack of knowledgeable people to give them proper ratings.

I notice a good bulk of the SMS Tec Toy games are rated 5 regardless if they are very hard to find or very common. Infact quite a few of the SMS games on that listed are inaccurate.

I use Google Docs, and stick all my information into a spreadsheet. I like how it can import and export to and from practically any file format, but I just wish there was a way to keep my OpenOffice sheets and my online Google Docs synchronised.
Also, seconding the caution of Digitpress' listings. Everything besides the NES (of course), Intellivision and VCS all seems so arbitrary, with the prices and rarity number and what-have-you.

I used to own a copy of Shining Force until I had to send it back to relatives some years ago.
Otherwise my rarest game is... is Phantasy Star II rare at all?

It plays ok. I have never been a huge Mega Man fan so my frame of reference isn't so good but it seems to play fine. The Screen scrolls up and down to compensate for the Game Gear's little screen. It seems to control great and the graphics look good enough.

I find DP's rarity guide utterly useless, but I collect PAL games. It is very much based on NTSC games, and from what I've seen of it, it's only any good for older 8 bit systems. Even then the SMS rarity guide is way off on quite a few games....
I'm not sure what my rarest overall MD game is, quite a few of the PAL games I have which are rare are pretty common in other regions. Probably Daze Before Christmas or Death And Return Of Superman. If we were talking by Region, I have most of the rare PAL games, just missing two or three from what i consider the top 20 rarest. My favourite rarity by far though is my Ecco box set (http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s132/ninjabearhug/blog/mda2e034.jpg), I really love the design of that thing and it looks super cool next to my SMS Lucky Dime Caper gift set of the same design :)

All according to Digitalpress
My most rare Sega Cd game is Time Gal but it more fun to brag about Snatcher and Lunar
Time Gal?!? They are talking sh*t.
Shadowrun and Keioh Yugekitai Ltd Edition w/ slip case are far more rare, and they're by no means the rarest MCD titles. Just try to find Sing! in an online auction.
As for Sega CD, the only title I had trouble finding was Cobra: The Space Adventure. I don't know if it's particularly rare but it hardly shows up on eBay. I think Keio Flying Squadron is rare in the US but there are many PAL versions floating about.
There are plenty of PAL Mega CD rarities, though some are plentiful in other regions such as The Adventures of Batman and Robin. Otherwise there are a few PAL exclusive titles worth picking up such as Theme Park and Syndicate.

Yeah it was fun making that list. Digitalpress isn't perfect but there are not so many sights like that out there. Space adventure was at the top of there list. I would have posted Snatcher but time Gal of all things beat it out. Same with the PS1. I have bunch of at least Semi Rare games and In the Hunt of all things bet that out at least by rarity.

Thank you. I so happy so you explained this difference to me. Fine the Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World (you I am talking about one cart right?) is not most rare cart in the world. From the start I never said it was. I only said that according to Digitalpress it was most rare cart I had. It received a three which is not very high. However it does beat out the one that the plain All-Stars cart received along with at about half the of the SNES library.
I am so glad we have people like you on this earth this to nitpick at every single point people make. It much more pleasant place with your type hanging around. Now why don't you go back and quote every post from every person with game that is not rare according to you.

LOL - well said.
I think my rarest MD games are Alien Soldier and Mega Man Wily Wars, although I didn't realise Mega Man was rare until someone on this site pointed it out, and I already had it by then. I also have quite a lot of MD games that were bastards to get hold of (MUSHA, Yu Yu, Magical Flying Hat) but I think I was just trying to get hold of them at a bad time or something...

I'd say that the Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World is rare. Since all lots of people see is the plain All-Stars cart which isn't rare just in high demand (for some reason) like Final Fantasy 7 PS1. So what you're saying is true.

I don't think I was nitpicking to begin with; all I did was state that neither cart was even remotely rare, something that eBay can attest to as there are currently 33 auctions for Mario World & Allstars carts, never mind eBay shops.
I think it was you who got all smart-arse with semantics. Or at least tried to. So I returned the favour :)
To further highlight your poor use of word classification: if SMW&A is more rare than SMW, could one argue that Altered Beast is more amazing than, say, Pit Fighter?

Oh, please. Knock it off. Iron Lizard never said the goddam game was rare. He said it was the rarest SNES game he owns, according to DP.
And if he gave you a little attitude after you felt compelled to "correct" him, I think those of us who actually UNDERSTOOD his original post would agree that you had it coming.
Maybe you should be picking apart DP's site directly rather trying to start arguments with people who are merely repeating the information DP is offering.

Well then I will continue to use little words. My primitive words may be hard to understand for a master of the English language such as yourself. I hope you can understand it. Amazing is not measurable. However the concept of rarity often is. For example I here are the ebay auctions you spoke of. I will use actually links because your highly developed mind may have trouble understanding what I am trying to convey to you
Here we have 33 like you pointed out. Actually your total did include Ebay shops. 28 auctions and 5 in ebay shops. However there are actually 15 in ebay shops so you are right. It brings up the total to 43
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZVideoQ5fGamesQ5fGames?_nkw=Super+Mario+ All-Stars+%26+SUper+MARio+World&_sacat=0&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=Super+Mario+All-Stars+SUper+MARio+World&_osacat=0
Now lets look at the normal All-stars cart. I see 137 auctions alone for this game.
http://video-games.shop.ebay.com/items
/_W0QQPlatformZNintendoQ252CQ2520SuperQQ_dmptZVideo Q5fGamesQ5fGames?_nkw=mario+all-stars+-world&_sacat=139973&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=final+fantasy+iii&_osacat=139973
Now I will add the Ebay stores to the total. Well that is only 120 more. 257 is certainly more then 43 I would say.

Ahem.
It’s three years since I last made that post.
I have still not managed to find a single copy of Ristar.
Either I have really bad luck in my used video game searching, or its “common and cheap” reputation is a thing of the past. Frankly, I think the secret is out about Ristar and all the collectors [who aren’t me, that is] have already snapped up all the available copies.

Moonwalker is really expensive and tough to track down due to demand, but isn't it only like a R3 on the Digitpress rating? Unless you're talking about the Master System version, which is a bit rarer at R5.
Oddly enough though, the Master System version can be bought at half-price what the Genesis version is going for ($20-30, I got my copy $27 CIB + Shipping). I'm assuming because the Master System version is pretty horrible.

The rarest game I own used to be Megaman Megaworlds, or Rockman Megaworlds, and Bare Knuckle III. But I sold RM, and I sold BK3 in favor of SR3 (cheaper) and now my rarest cart is probably this strange homemade (??) version of Castlevania: Bloodlines, which is like The New Generation, except the title screen says Bloodlines. I think. I forget now. And you have to insert it in backwards, and the label is clearly homemade. Looks like an 11 year old drew it. I should probably take a picture.
