Hi,

I have a 32x and had it for a while but while on the internet, I noticed that brand new 32xs come with these steel shields. Do they actually affect anything? Some person said that sound messes up without. I wanna buy them anyway, just to make it "official". Does anyone know where to get them? I tried ebay but no one has them (except some guy whos selling his whole system for $150:daze: ).

Thanks for any help,
Blades

They don't really do a thing. I'm sure you can find them for next to nothing. I'd sell mine, but they are kind of bent.

Hi,

Thanks for the input (I'm liking Sega-16 more and more)! So they are completely useless? if they were required by FCC then they wouldn't be included in japan and Europe, would they, were they? bah, 32x is so confusing. If you can find any sites that have it please let me know. Oh, and I'm gonna use them on a model 2 genny hooked up to an SCD2 so no dongle worries.

Apparantly connecting the sheilding from the connections on the 32X to the internal shielding on the Gen/MD can reduce some noise in the audio.

Seriously? That's pretty cool. Also, does 32x change sound at all? Someone said that it adds 2 channels for voice. If I connect audio through Sega CD 2 out(as I usually do), will I hear the 32x sounds?

Regards and thanks for all the help,
Blades

The Sega 32X has two-channel PWM sound.. It outputs this into the cartridge port, which goes through the built-in Genesis mixer, then out the AV output...

I think I read they were only needed for the Mega Drive 1. According to the hardware guide on Gamefaqs anyway.

they are required for both.. it's to complete the "proper" ground connection, and shield.. the Genesis 2 is even MORE prone to buzzing too, so it's even more required..

I don't have those "electromagnetic" shields and my sound is kickass.

I have had no problems without using the plates on my Model 1 and Model 2 setups. I had a Model 2 Genesis, with a Model 2 Sega CD and a 32X all hooked up at one point, and I had great sound. I didn't have any of the problems that you are all having with your Model 2 systems. Problems such as, crappy sound, loose AC adaptors, needing the damned plates.

Now my setup is a Model 1 Genesis, with a 32X and a Model 2 Sega CD and again, no problems. No sound problems at all and everything sounds great. I guess you guys have bunk consoles then.

So they're completely useless? I guess it'll be fine since I've already been using it for 2 years without. Thanks for all your help, I guess they are useless.

the shield plates are to make sure the ground loop is fine... FCC didn't request it for no reason..

it may be fine, and your lucky.. but some of us have overloaded electrical outlets ;)

I bet the ground plates add an extra megahertz. :)

nah, more like 60Hz XD

What is a 60Hz XD? Is that better than a regular, non-XD 60Hz? Is it..... space-age?

So lemme get this straight. Some models require it but some dont? I guess it just a matter of luck. mine gives off a slight whining noise so i guess thats the problem.
So no ideas at all where to get some? lol

it depends how much noise you have in your room, that the Genesis is... it helps remove interference, by shielding the two from each other, while sharing an electrical ground..

it's what they got in Mars.. those damn martians! LMAO

XD nice. So it wont affect the hardware will it? such as the interference messing up one of the processors or something?

if it crashes, then it did. if it didn't, then your fine..

Blades
12-13-2006, 05:49 PM
XD real helpful, it may crash but it won't permanently destroy a processor will it? like bringing a magnet toward a computer?

I think you mean it makes the ground CONTINUOUS.
A loop is always a bad thing unless you WANT hum to be exceedingly prevalent in your signal and savety to be compromised if there's exposed metal.

what i meant by the ground loop being fine, was it not being there... i didn't make that post clear..

So the insides of the 32x and genny are safe? even with the shields disconnected? Thats my main concern.

Thanks for all your help,

Go to a hardware store and get some foil or something, that may do the trick?

I know I don't have shielding plates for my Sega CD consoles either. I just remembered that. I guess that explains why I got a Model 1 and a Model 2 for the same price?

Blades

I'm just gonna leave it like it is right now. It's not really a problem. If any ebay auctions come up with those plates It would be nice if someone posted it here.

Again thanks for all your help,

I recently got a 32x myself now and looking to track down a pair. Put up a request on ebay. Just need luck now.

I have some, I'd put up on ebay, for either Blades and Symos to fight it out. Sorry Symos, I sent a package out to England today, and it was hell, and expensive to mail overseas. I didn't have packaging materials, so I had to buy them at the Post Office... and that cost as much as the shipping.

So I'll mail out packages overseas. But I'm not stepping foot in a post office for another week, lol.

Ok, In the mean time I'll see if a pair from the uk turns up. Never know.

Blades

So have you put it up on Ebay? If you did that would rock. Im in USA so no shipping problems here!

You can use an envelope for the plates right? They're small enough I think.

Thanks!,

Just for the record, how much would shiping to the UK cost? Just incase.

David J.
01-29-2007, 08:24 AM
Nah, I'm not putting them up, yet... I'm sure they'll show up.

Shipping to the UK actually isn't much more, even with 7-day Airmail. It is a pain in the ass tho.

If you do put them up on ebay, you wouldn't mind giving us a link please?

David J.
02-03-2007, 07:32 PM
If/when I do, then yeah, I'll post a link. My dad is looking for some bubble mailer, he thinks he has some, so maybe I'll list them then.

Seeing that my package made it to a friend in England, I feel a little better, so worldwide wouldn't be a problem.

The shields weren't included in all releases of the 32X. The first time I bought one (from Toys R us for $20) it came without a game, without that side piece, and with the shields saying they were an FCC requirement. It crapped out on me in about a month and I exchanged it for a version that came with Virtue Fighter, and it had the side piece thing, but no shields.
