Of course, I'm a Sega freak. But all my life, I've been about as big a Movie freak as I have a Sega freak.
So, here goes.
What are your 10 favorite movies and why? I know it's hard to narrow it down to 10... ...I did the best I could for myself.
10: The Big Boss
-----
A lot of people consider Enter The Dragon to be Bruce Lee's masterpiece, but I feel otherwise. This is still the best martial arts movie of all time. Even though it's just Bruce taking off, this movie is still his (and Raymond Chow's) greatest effort. The storyline might not be much, but the feeling you get from watching this movie makes up for it. Not to mention the badass fight sequences...
09: This Is Spinal Tap
-----
I never get tired of this movie. I'm a metalhead, and seeing the dumb antics of a metal band, albeit not a real one, dosen't get old. I think the only scripted scene in the entire movie was the "Stonehenge" gag. Just goes to show you the power of British Improvisation.
08: Jackie Brown
-----
Yeah, yeah, I know Jackie Brown is basically Diet Resivoir Dogs. The storyline and how the problem is solved is very entertaining and interesting to watch though. There are a few funny moments as well.
07: Saving Silverman
-----
Saving Silverman is a dumb movie, but nonetheless one of the most fun movies you'll ever see. It seems everyone can enjoy this film, from 8 years old to 80 years old. Through the classic comedy lies what really isn't a bad message at all: There's a special someone for everyone.
06: Princess Mononoke
-----
Princess Mononoke is Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece, eaisly the best anime movie ever. This was my favorite movie at one time. Even though I can't stand most anime, Hayao Miyazaki has a way with words, and an even better way with imagery. This film is his baby all the way. A captivating story sets the place of the movie, while deeper meanings are conveyed.
05: UHF
-----
This movie, simply put, never gets old. One of the reasons the film is so funny is because the whole movie is really just a big joke. A big joke about other jokes. There are plenty of gags that simply wouldn't fly today. Blind man with a Rubik's Cube? Try pulling that off in today's PC world!!!
04: Donnie Darko
-----
How can you not be captivated by some way when you watch this? Jake Gyllenhaal does an excellent job at acting out the title character. This film makes me think for hours on end about endless scenarios to both Donnie's life and mine. Although I've heard that liking this movie is an accquried taste, I haven't met too many people that don't like it.
03: Pink Floyd - The Wall
-----
Yeah, non-Floyd fans might not get this one. This movie has some of the best symbolism and imagery ever to captivate an audience. This movie is a lot like how I imagined the album the first time I ever heard it. Every time I watch this movie, I notice something different, or make some sort of connection I didn't know about before. Let's not forget that it's based on one of the greatest Concept Albums of all time.
02: Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb
-----
Stanley Kubrick is one of my favorite directors, and I'm probably the only person who dosen't think A Clockwork Orange or 2001 is his masterpiece. Hardly ever can a person make a political movie that's scary and entertains at the same time. Kubrick really hit the nail on the head here. Hard. Peter Sellers shines through, and the title character is myster-hilar-ious. The movie really makes you think, plus: I really like the name.
01: Pulp Fiction
-----
Quentin Tarantio is, simply put, my hero (aside of Sonic The Hedgehog, that is). Ever since I was two years old, I've wanted to be a filmmaker. When I saw this movie for the first time, I knew that these were the type of films I was to make. Extravagant Independent films that twist the mind, but entertain at the same time.
The storytelling in this film is probably the most amazing thing about it. Three different stories go on at the same time, and surprisingly, it dosen't bore. The stories are complex and enthralling, while visually entertaining. Probably the least-predictable movie ever made.

Hats off to Dr. Strangelove... big Peter Sellers fan here (although he was kinda a freakin' childish prick in real life). I must say I agree with your opinion of 2001 and Clockwork. I love Kubrick and those two are so low on my list for 1 reason per movie.
2001 - I fall asleep halfway through everytime. All that this movie has is great effects.
Clockwork - my mother had me watch this at a very young age, 9, yeah 9. Ever since I have considered it smut... and only smut. I liked it some when I was 14, because it was SMUT.
sooo:
Dr. Strangelove: love it to death
Legend: don't ask, me and my brother watched this every saturday ever since we were little.
Amelie: this movie is just so pretty, I like all of Jean Pierre Jeunet's films. This movie just leaves me with a nice warm feeling in the heart
ALIEN series: come on', ITS ALIEN. order of approval 1,3,4,2... I hate and love 2, I think it is the worst of the 4. Now hate on me all you want.
Jacob's Latter: yet another film me and my brother watched every Saturday. To bad he's dead now, we can't do that anymore.
I love a lot of movies, watch tons of em' all the time and have a hard time keeping track of all the ones I like. These though, well these I could watch a bagillion times and still not even think twice and watch them again. So thats why I listed these.

Picking a top 10 over all categories is tough, since I like so many movies I always have an easier time if we break em down into 'action' 'comedy' etc...but here goes:
-Good Will Hunting: This movie just hits it right on the head on so many levels, the way it realistically portrays friendships, depression, love, hate, and how it ultimately has all the characters, in one way or another, figure out themselves how to let go of the past and move on.
-Rocky: It's real, and it's inspirational. Rocky is real...I mean, he almosts gives up the night before the fight "I can't do it Adrian"...this is an issue that hits us all before a big event or turning point in our lives.
-Das Boot: I'm particularly fascinated by WWII anyway, and this is the best WWII movie period.
-Unforgiven: Clint's masterpiece. His best performance, his best directing, his best cast members, and all in his best genre the Western. "Well I ain't like that no more...I ain't some crazy, killin fool"....it seems like the dialogue and some of the scenes are just a big ode to all his old westerns, with obvious references to the Dollar trilogy, and Outlaw Josey Wales.
-Lawrence of Arabia: There's never really been another movie with the quality and amount of grand visual shots that this film has, and throw in the huge musical score, and you have probably the last grand epic masterpiece to have been made.
-2001:ASO
-Barry Lyndon
-Back to the Future
-The Quiet Man
-The Good The Bad The Ugly
(i didn't feel like writing anymore)

Here're my absolute top 4, followed by an unnordered list of greats.
These four are movies I could watch an endless number of times and still find myself completely entertained.
..4) Super Troopers: Stupid fun, nothing more, but that's the whole point. Not every joke is a hit, but good god, I've laughed more than my fair share because of this movie. Comaraderie and idiot hijinks.. Definately my favourite lowbrow comedy.
..3) Spirited Away: An awe-inspiring picture. Miyazaki's vision is nothing short of magical.
..2) Big Trouble in Little China: Pure awesome. If you've seen it, I hope you agree. The Kurt Russel/John Carpenter coupling produced a number of neat films, but this is my unquestioned favourite. The characters are simply great, and the outrageous plot combined with the martial arts antics create an entertaining experience inferior to only one other film.
..1) Yellow Submarine: I watched this movie daily when I was 3 years old, and it still hasn't lost its charm. The animation is wonderful, the story bizarre, and the Beatles' finest fill the soundtrack. The only downside to this otherwise perfect movie is that the Beatles' themselves do not provide the voices for their namesakes in the picture.
-Terminator 2: It's full of some of the most glaring continuity errors of any movie, but damn, James Cameron knows his way around an action sequence.
-Requiem for a Dream: Never has a movie shocked me as much as this. My first time watching this was absolutely horrifying. Impossible to forget, and as such impossible not to include on this top ten list.
-Heat: Perhaps the greatest cast of any movie, and what a movie it is.
-Aliens: Alien is amazing, but Aliens is the total package. It's tragic that the franchise was so crapped on after this one, culminating in the grand turd that is Alien Resurrection.
-Donnie Darko: An intriguing movie that leaves much for the viewer to figure out on their own. which is perhaps the best way.
-The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: For a long while I'd considered For A Few Dollars More to be the best of the trilogy, but after having watched this one again recently I was reminded of how deserving it is of being among the finest ever.
There are many others I would love to mention, but as has already been said, all-encompassing top tens are a tad restrictive.
NintendoDieScreaming, that's a great buffet of cinema treats. Peter Sellers was awesome, and I'd definately have at least one Pink Panther movie on my top 20. Spinal Tap as well. The Wall is certainly interesting.. but as Pink Floyd cinema goes, I prefer Live At Pompeii, although of course these are two very different breeds of filmmaking.
ALIEN series: come on', ITS ALIEN. order of approval 1,3,4,2... I hate and love 2, I think it is the worst of the 4. Now hate on me all you want.
Alien Resurrection above Aliens..? Popcorn brainrot above action masterpiece..?! I must be in bizarro world to be reading this!

Yes, I like popcorn brain rot over James Cameron Dog shit! The movie is trite, I only like the Queen in it... I hate the stupid family peace together they try to put with the little girl Newt/Ripley/and retard Space Jar Head. I hate the meandering story line and boring action. Atleast Alien 4 is pretty to watch.
Here is my reasoning for my approval in the films:
Alien: suspenseful, great acting, Ridley Scott knows how to portray a story on film... always has and always will. Even in the slow parts he can keep it interesting with the wonderful real life visuals and great atmosphere. One thing I will say about Ridley, this man makes movie dialogue feel natural. People don't stream monologues left and right in real life, his films don't have that either, he gets rid of monologues by visually telling you. Most people can't do this well. And then tack on the name Jean Pierre Jeunet who has some of the most amazing fantasy style visuals... I love his movies just for the pretty sites to look at, his and Carro's imagination a just weird and creepy... I'd love to walk around in their heads for just a minute. (watch Amelie, Delicatessen and City of Lost Children to understand what I mean. The visuals are great, story you may not like, but the visuals are things made of dreams)
Alien3: Full respect goes to David Fincher for pulling this one off. He made this film getting bits and pieces of the script every week... and first his FIRST real film he still made it work. The visuals were awesome, and the camera techniques he used were great. It brings back the great suspense of the first and adds an awesome industrial feel to it. It has to many monologues and bloated dialogue that I hate.
Alien Resurrection: The movie was fun, it had some great action scenes, good gore, LOTS of detailed Aliens to actually SEE, this was good action film (I generally don't like action films). It felt really comic book like to me, kinda like reading the Dark Horse Alien series. The action scenes are also beautiful to watch, come on that scene under the water is cool. This is stupid Candy, sometimes I am up for some candy.
Aliens: James Cameron is a prick, I hate him, I really really hate him. Don't get me wrong I like some of his films (Terminator) but this is just bleh to me. To many campy things that try to pretend they are serious. Atleast Ressurection knew it had campy scenes. AND Bill Paxton, if I ever saw that guy walking down the street I would imagine in my head smashing his face into the ground repeatedly... then cross the street because I wouldn't actually do it because I don't want to get arrested!
I really would like to like this movie, but it just hurts to watch those damn Marines run around all Rambo style, listen to their campy lines, watch that annoying little girl, this isn't a masterpiece... this is your regular old Hollywood action film. It has been done before and will be done a hundred times again. It is why I don't watch Action films but on rare occasion!

You Can't Fight in Here....It's The WAR ROOM!!!
I'm more in favor of smaller lists.
I've seen A LOT of movies, but find it difficult to pick favorites
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
My favorite of the 3 films.
Manages to blend story and action in a way the previous 2 didn't.
Of course this could be because I'm a fan of both Harrison Ford and the Old-Sean Connery.
Fight Club
Say what you will about this movie.
Wether you think that David Lynch is synonomous with 'WHAT THE F@&K'; or that it's over-rated, facist, stupid, depressing, and too dark. . .
It's still a great movie to me with a fittingly dark social commentary.
I also can't forget the great casting job.
Princess Mononoke
Since this was already mentioned, I'll just skip the summary.
The CROW
This Movie is beyond cool.
Don't even try argue with this.
can't think of too many others.

Somebody needs to mention Blade Runner, so I will. Its design has influenced practically everything since its release, and also fits in -- rather than the argument from those that initially trashed it -- into the film's overall theme of a paranoid world descending into total artificiality. Implicitly this is a film more disturbing than its modern cyberpunk offspring, such as The Matrix, in regards to the idea of a dystopic police state. This goes unnoticed much of the time because the idea is not overstated through dialogue the way it is in other movies dealing with the same thematic concerns.

I thought Bladerunner was nice and visually strong.
But it felt slowmoving and weak to me.
Far from bad, and better than most other Phillip K. adaptations, but...uhhhhhh
It feels as if someone's resting a small anvil on my head as I'm watching it.

Many people say that. I can't say that I feel the same way -- I think it's an awesome mood movie -- but in much the same way as another sci-fi giant, 2001, it just bores the hell out of some people.
One thing that also seems to be common, and I can vouch for personally, is that the movie becomes better with successive viewings. It's one of the most thematically dense movies I've seen.

The Stupids:
Many, many years ago
When I was twenty three
I got married to a widow
Pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown up daughter
With flowing hair of red,
My father fell in love with her
And soon the two were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
Now my daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matters worse
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad,
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown up daughter,
Who of course was my step-mother.
Father's wife then had a son
Who kept them on the run,
And he became my grandson
For he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because although she is my wife,
She's now my grandma too.
If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it
It simply drives me wild.
For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw,
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa!

The Stupids...
Joan Stupid: Stanley, beware of the Drive B.
Stanley Stupid: What's a Drive B?
Joan Stupid: We don't know, but whatever error you make with it could be fatal.
Stanley Stupid: [notices a bee landing on his steering wheel] What are you doing you darn bee? Can't you see I'm trying to drive? OH MY GOD, THE DRIVE BEE!
Yeah. Saw that one in theatres, I did. I am both proud and ashamed, perhaps one significantly more than the other..
..but yeah, David Fincher. I agree with you lordofduct that he did an fairly impressive job directing Alien 3 considering the studio hurdles and the fact that he had only helmed music videos previously. What I absolutely hate about Alien 3 is that by killing off Newt and Hicks, and Ripley somehow becoming host to an alien queen (bloody impossible, regardless of the film's attempt at an explanation), everything accomplished in Aliens is made worthless. But I suppose that was the point.. start the film with a massive letdown, and keep the mood bleak for pretty much the remainder, culminating in a conclusion so permanent that the very existance of an Alien 4 is utterly shameful. I do enjoy Alien 3, especially the extended cut available in the Alien Quadrilogy, but the movie is such a killjoy considering my great fondness for Aliens and the characters there in.

Meh... "The meaning of Life" is so much better... shit "Life of Brian" is better the the holy grail.
Maybe its because I've seen the movie 100 billion times since I was like 8, but yeah I like the others better.
Have you seen "Brazil" per chance... great Monty Python style humor (as its written and directed by Terry Gilliam! you know... the guy who directed the Python films and drew the art for the TV show). The movie is a twisted spoof that resembles 1984...
My favorite scene in the movie is when the main character is barrading his mother for forcing his boss to give him a promotion (as its not ethical). She continues to ignore him and eating her Ice Scream scoop looking 5 course meal in a meat ball. Just then a wall explodes behind them in the restaraunt they are in and the waitor crew rushes to cover up the mess as everyone ignores it... even though 3 or 4 people die in the explosion.
Other great films by Terry Gilliam include:
Twelve Monkeys
The Fisher King
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
I also was upset to hear that a screenplay he put together and started to film didn't get finished... it was a film about the antichrist being born and two angels are sent to watch over him and make sure he doesn't start trouble. At birth though the babies get mixed up accidently and for the first decade or so of the babies life the two angels watch the wrong kid! Hilarity certainly ensues!
Oh and if anyone dare says the "Fear and Loathing" belongs on that list is tasteless in my book.
I also find it strange that Ridley Scott is listed quite a bit on the list:
Legend
Alien
Bladerunner
I wonder if anyone will name any more of his classics though for some reason most people don't recognize his name yet his movies are such huge raves (except Legend... I love Legend but so many people trash that film, I don't get why.)

Yeah... I thought I said that when I listed Alien the series with Alien 3... but then looking back and I made no nod at Fight Club in there.. hrmmm.
Anyways Lynch is that ass hat who did "lost highway"... that wasn't a WTF movie... unless the W stands for 'why' and your asking what made you watch that trash! Lynch should rot in hell... the only thing kinda noteable is Dune. And it still wasn't that good.
and no Elephant Man is NOT noteable as being good!
Oh yeah and Ridley does have some "why'd you do that" movies under his belt. Like "J.I. Jane"... WHAT WAS HE THINKING?

Post here everytime you finish watching a movie. Doesn't matter if you've seen it for the first time, or if you've watched it 100 times, post here and let us know if it's worthwhile IYO.
I just watched GATTACA for the umpteenth time, and I gotta say it's still a great encapsulating mystery movie everytime I sit through it. I love the neo-modernist future the film takes place in, and the visuals themselves are very pleasing to the eye, even Uma Thurman looks sexy in those business girl outfits and her hair up. It's a mystery plot, with a sci-fi theme, however the story is so scary because it's one of these sci-fi movies that could turn into science non-fiction in the near future, with all the genetic testing for jobs and stuff. I give this a thumbs way up.

Oh dear god... I'd be posting 3 times a day if I did after every movie.
As I don't sleep very much but don't want to expend much energy when I should sleep I watch movies (I hate TV). Today I watched:
Back to the Future 3: I have always loved this trilogy, though I prefer the 2nd one, this was the one on Showtime today so I enjoyed it. I always loved trains. I really don't need to explain the flick as EVERYONE knows it.
Samorais: A really crappy Jap/French film about some demon was resurected to fight some war 500 years ago. It is now time for him to be reborn so he kills himself and impregnates the daughter of an ancestor of the guy who resurrected him. The movie is corny, and even cornier is that the Demon produces violent video games to twist the minds of children and finance his crime syndocate. Only watch if your bored and enjoy B movies.
Henry Rollins Live at Luna Park: I love this guy, I think he is hilarious.Despite his macho image he is rather intelligent... and to watch a large dude like him talking about poetry and crying is hilarious. He has great anecdotes about his travels around the world. My favorites is his story about Iggy Pop... Iggy Pop ROCKS.

The Theif and the Cobbler
A movie that's history is almost as intresting as the movie its self. Even though it's set in Arabia, it is NOT an Aladdin rip-off, like most people call it. Infact, the people behind Aladdin did the ripping off, if any.

My fav movie are
Star Wars Episodes 1,3,4,5,and 6-these movies are masterpieces. Episode 3 blew me away, and the original trilogy I grew up with and Episode 1 will always have the greatest saber duel ever.
Bloodsport-being a huge Van Damme fan this one takes the cake
Beverly Hills Ninja- Hey I like ninjas and Chris Farley put them both together makes a hilirious action movie
Blade Runner-nuff said movin on
Dumb and Dumber-this movie never gets old with it's goofy humor

Watched Das Boot yesterday. Man, I haven't had a big screen tv for very long, but this movie just will blow you away on a big screen. My god I feel like I'm inside the submarine with these guys, suffering through every depth charge attack. I've watched this movie literally dozens of times and it never loses its edginess.
One of the amazing things about this movie, and why its so damn good is how even though there are about a dozen characters with prominent parts in the movie, by the end you really feel like you know these guys, and thats something special because there's alot of BIG movies where the character development sucks ass (DO YOU HEAR THAT OLIVER STONE?/alexander).
I love the special effects and the audio is and always will be amazing, there will never be another sub movie that tops this thing. Never. My God what a production. A+++

I'll agree with you StRiDA that Star Wars episode I had the best lightsaber duel ever, but that's the only saving grace in that movie IMO. I usually fast forward to that battle and skip the rest of the movie because it's garbage. Episode III though did redeem the franchise in my eyes, though I am partial to Empire Strikes Back. I remember sitting in the theater when Vader revealed to Luke that he was his father. I was shocked as was a whole generation.

Watched School Of Rock this weekend. Seen it numerous times before and I still laugh hard at the same spots every time. No matter how down I am, or if I'm in a bad mood, the opening 5 minutes to that movie just make me laugh hysterically. The crazy shit that Jack Black does when he's on stage is simply outrageous.
I love a movie like this where it's hilarious, without trying to gross you out, or without alot of cussing. It takes alot of work nowadays I think to make a comedy without gross-out sight gags and curse words.(not that I have anything against curse words) Great movie for adults and for kids to watch if you have a family, and a great (and funny) soundtrack too!. You've gotta laugh at the songs Jack Black makes up, like the song he creates about not paying the rent and getting kicked out of his own band  Highly recommended.

I watched The Devil's Rejects last night. I wasn't entirely sure what to think of it after the movie came to a close, but after a good night's sleep and a breakfast of champions, my opinion on the film is.. well actually, I'm still not sure what to think of it. It's very grim, and not a horror film for its scares but rather its sheer shocking brutality. The screen is not constantly festooned with violence, but the lead characters show no restraint in doing absolutely awful things when the opportunity arises.
That being said, there is a storyline here, and it is far stronger than Rob Zombie's previous effort House of 1000 Corpses. The movie takes place months after the events depicted in House of 1000 Corpses, and focuses upon the travels of three of the family after being flushed from their home by local law enforcement. Sid Haig is once again great as Captain Spaulding, and possibly the most annoying character from House of 1000 Corpses, Baby, is played far better this time around.
I recommend The Devil's Rejects only to those able to stomach scenes of sadistic violence and other such abhorrent behavior. It is far from being the most disturbing film of all time, but there is enough here to offend and sicken. To all those who watch this, I hope you see that there is more to the film than just the gore, although that is clearly a focal point.
I have finally decided that, yes, I liked this movie.

Battle Royale.
I found it better than the novel it was based on. The second one was trash. I liked it when I first saw it, but what the hell was I thinking? However... I wanna see the "Revenge" edition.

Finished watching The Seven Samurai last eve. A buddy and I have been slowly working through imdb.com's top 250 films, and this one was next on the ol' chopping block. And damn, what a movie.
For a 1956 film, The Seven Samurai does not show its age in any significant way, aside from the bloodless battles and obviously the fact that it was filmed in black & white. It's difficult to really voice what my thoughts are on the movie.. I was highly impressed. There, that'll do. If you haven't seen it, do so!

I just remembered Falling Down, which is just AWESOME.
"Learn how to shoot asshole!"
And here's more random quotes from The Stupids
(Stanley and Petunia are in "Heaven")
Petunia: You know who I miss? Mom and Buster.
Stanley: Don't worry, they'll be here soon enough, the way your mother drives!
(Petunia laughs at first, then quickly becomes confused)
Hail to thee, O Lord!
Actually, it's pronounced Loyed.
All these years we've been saying it wrong!
Well Joan, we've had a remarkable 20 minutes. We died, went to heaven, met god, and got brought back to life!
Well, me and Buster traveled back to the age of the dinosaurs, and Buster made himself the most importantly mysterious figure of all mankind!
Buster!
Sorry dad!

I've watched a number of movies since the last post.. here's a few.
The Business - English criminals up to no good in 1980's Spain is more or less the premise here. I enjoyed the film, but as British crime cinema goes it's not the champ. There really isn't much of a sense of the scope of the criminal actions taking place.. for an operation that's supposedly large scale, it feels very miniature. Perhaps that has to do with the film's budget, or just director laziness. Still, rather an entertaining show. I give'r a recommendation.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Always a winner. The version I watched today was the horribly bastardized TV cut, and while I would hate for this version to be the one people are introduced to the film with, I really didn't mind it too terribly. I've seen the original countless times, so the movie can more or less play straight from memory. It's a funny show, this one..
National Lampoon's Lost Reality 2 - For the love of God, what a fucking waste of time. Chances are you, like me, read the title and thought to yourself, "Wow.. here's a cinema treasure!" If you like your jokes humourless and drawn out well beyond their life span, sign up today! Sure, there are a few strangely amusing segments having to do with the sickening depths people will fall to for a sweet bit o' cash, but so much of this stinky dump fails beyond imagination. The 70 someodd minutes of Lost Reality 2 are occupied by a number of fake reality TV show pilot episodes, and... I feel not like talking about this steamy turd any more.

Since my last post it has been quite a few movies I watched... most of them being rewatches. I'll post the ones I like best.
I <3 Huckabees - Damn good movie. It is a movie that loosely describes exostentialism in a very hilarious black comedy manor (not african american comedy, black comedy or dark humor... i.e. anything other then Mr. Bean that Rowan Atkinson did). It has a stellar line up of actors, a very good soundtrack and some of the best lines I've heard in a long time.
Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness - I love this series, great freaking movies every one of them. I should NOT have to describe them one bit. If you are someone who hasn't seen them you probably are someone who wouldn't like them because if you are into B rated horror flicks then this series is somewhere on your top ten list.
Man with a Screaming Brain - I was in a Bruce Cambel mood and watched this made for TV movie by him. Kind of weird, dry in a lot of parts, but has its funny moments.
Buba Hotep - still was in a Bruce Cambel mood so I watched this again... An aged Elvis is in a rest home and no one believes he is Elvis. Elvis along with JFK who has been dyed black and has a sand bag for half his brain are in a rest home which has become pray to a mummy dressed all in redneck cowboy gear. Good laughs and very far out there and unexpected script... again for the B movie lovers out there.
Corpse Bride - checked it out in the theatre. It was fun, I love Burton's stop motion capture films. This one is much more twisted then Nightmare Before Xmas and I found much more enjoyable. Still has the trite songs through out it though and nothing of the "Boogie Man" song calibur. Damn it.
Kung Fu Hustle - again I watched this... I love this freaking movie along with a lot of Chow's stuff. I recently only got into him when this movie was released. I remember I was a bit depressed over my brother dieing so I went to the movies with a friend to get my mind off of stuff. I didn't know ANY of the flicks on the roster so we snatched tickets up for "Ammityvile" I think it was or some stupid horror remake. When walking to the theatre I saw the name "KungFu Hustle" over a door and said "FUCK THIS.. I love Kung Fu, we are SO watching this." Damn good spur of the moment choice that was. I immediately DL'd it afterward and have watched it 5 more times... I just realized yesterday that I have the .sub file for it and was like HEY god damn it, all along I've been watching this with out subtitles... HA.
I watched some other good flicks, but I've bored you enough.
The Outsiders: The Complete Novel: One of my favorite films of all time, based on my favorite novel! The new cut has 10 minutes of cut footage restored and edited back in, and it does so much to flesh out the story more. Wonderful new soundtrack really makes this the definitive version and does much justice to Hinton's masterpiece.
Tarzan I: Got this from the Disney Movie Club, and I must admit that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've been surprised by a lot of these direct-to-video sequels, but this was definitely one of the better ones. I hope to finish the set when Tarzan comes to DVD the 18th of this month.

Boggy Creek II: Actually, it's Boggy Creek III, but nobody saw that one, so it's fine. Although, no one saw this one either.
Anyway, it was the MST3K version, making it better by about 70x. One of my favorites, mostly because I could actually get into the story, making the jokes even better.
From Dusk Till Dawn: I've seen it a hundred times and I never get tired of it. Awesome movie.
Aliens SE: I understand why Cameron cut all the extra footage, as it slows the film down for theater goers. For Alien fans though, it adds so much to the story. Got it for only $10 at Wal-Mart too!

Saw II: Hmm.. pretty gritty. Pretty gritty indeed. I don't really feel like going into much detail, but if you find yourself strangely entertained by the macabre, watch'er. I think it would have benefitted from deeper character backstory, but hey.. it's good as is.
Flightplan: GOOD GOD. It's mildy entertaining despite its extreme absurdity. The plot is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever come across, and Jodie Foster's constant exclamations of "Where's my daughter! Where are you hiding her!" are nails hammered straight into the pain center of your brain. Watch it if you must, but please don't pay money to witness this dungball.

Last Thursday I watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds as well as Castle In The Sky, two awesome Hayao Miyazaki films. For anyone that gets the channel, Turner Classic Movies is going to be playing Miyazaki movies every Thursday night for presumably the next few weeks.
I'd never seen Nausicaa before.. I thoroughly enjoyed it, possibly even more than Castle In The Sky, which as well is an fantastic show. Something that was especially neat about the showing of those movies on Thursday was the fact that they showed both the dubbed and subtitled versions back to back. Hopefully they'll continue that for the Thursdays to come.
I came into Nausicaa about ten minutes in, and for awhile I really wasn't too intrigued by it.. but before I knew it, an hour had passed, and I was completely engrossed. For a story that is ultimately an environmentalist tale, it's not preachy or pretentious at all. I was able to fill myself in on those first ten minutes with the subtitled version of the film that followed, and immediately inconsistencies in the translation were obvious.. for probably the best example, take Poison Jungle vs. Sea of Decay -- two different names for what are exactly the same thing in the film, the only difference being the translation in the dubbed versus that of the subbed. At any rate, amazing film. I highly recommend it.
Castle In The Sky I had seen before, but not subtitled like the one I ended up watching that night. There are some incredibly charming characters in this movie.. one of my favourites.
If you happen to get Turner Classic Movies, and you're even vagually interested in the animated greatness of ol' Miyazaki, definately check out the Thursday film chaos.

I've tried to watch Miyazaki films but they're all over my head and I can't get into them so I end up making MST3K style wisecracks until my friends kill me. I'm more into really corny retro-anime though, mostly because I grew up with it.
I saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith the other day, it was pretty much nonsense but there was enough mindless action and goofy puns to at least keep it interesting occasionally. It had a really slow start as well. I wouldn't reccommend it.

I could do without the Wachowski's manipulating comic book stories to preach to the masses whats right and whats wrong. Still want to see it though at least for the eye candy. Had enough of their multiculturalist nonsense with the Matrix movies to last an eternity, but it was good for sensory overload.
I just watched Ong-Bak The Thai Warrior over the weekend. Pleasantly suprised, this movie was pretty funny and it was refreshing to see a martial arts picture without any wirework whatsoever. Tony Jaa is an amazing fighter and he sure can jump.
Also watched House of Flying Daggers, speaking of wirework, I don't mind it when its done well, and this movie was fantastic. I like these modern kung-fu movies where the storyline is actually intriguing enough to keep your attention in-between fight scenes. Plus, Zhiyi Zang is so freaking smoking hot isn't she?

Get this, I watched Heavy Metal for the first time this weekend. lol. This was just crazy, I really liked it. Gratuitous violence and sex/nudity...what more can a guy ask for?
Also watched Rambo III for the thousandth time...love this flick.
I'm dissapointed with King Kong, I thought it was just too much....everything. I thought just about every character was horribly miscast, and I have no interest in Naomi Watts whatsoever....I thought Jessica Lange played up that part alot better in the '76 version. Then there was the bug scene in the pit....yeah I get it by this point, everything is supposed to be huge...got it Peter Jackson, can we please move the movie forward now? uhgg....just didn't care for it too much.

Freaks: The movie seems to be alot of random scenes thrown together, but the last 15-20 minutes make this just an awesome movie. The ending has a real Hitchcock-like feel to it. After I watched it, I found that the movie was actually a 3rd longer, but it was so disturbing (well, for 1932) that alot was cut, making this only a little over an hour long, and it explains why it feels to choppy.

The flick was very good (taking into consideration it is a video game movie). I really enjoyed it a lot. Kicked Resident Evil's ass! (just as the video games did too... hee hee).
I was amazed at how many children were there to see the film... check this. First off they only scheduled 2 matinees and 2 night showings at ONE theatre in my ENTIRE CITY OF WEST PALM (some suburbs were playing it)... they must of had low expectations or something. So now I ended up all the way in the front row staring neck crooked... luckily I wasn't one of the poor chaps having to lay on the ground though. Then there were 8 and 9 year olds sitting all around us... I mean shit these kids weren't even alive when Silent Hill one came out! (and that is pathetic)
The kids are all like "I wanna see the baby's! I wanna see the baby's!" from the start of the movie... which I will say the beginning is top notch on the mark kinda shit... the parents are just like "shhhhhh"
then it happens... the kids piss their God damn pants. You could tell the parents were asking themselves what came over them to let their child watch this movie... not that the RATED R wasn't a damn sign!
Oh... and something really cool (though kinda is cutting corners) they used the entire Silent Hill 2 soundtrack for the movie... I found that very cool and authentic feeling.

Silent Hill. Ho-ly shit. What a movie. There were parts of that film that stand out as being some of the most intense I've seen. That being said, there were a few awkward moments that killed the mood, but the good bits easily overtook that.
At any rate.. I went to see it with three friends of mine who were completely unfamiliar with the franchise, and they all enjoyed it (mind you, two of them are gorehounds). Point being, even if you know nothing about the Silent Hill games, yet you crave some nightmarish tension, you can do no better right now in the theatres than Silent Hill. Watch it! Do it!

...but aren't most R-rated flics basically PG/PG-13 movies with a few R-rated words, that may feature one or two topless shots of an actress, in hope of attracting an adolescent audience with their R-rating?
And, how many of the parents that took their kids to see SH thought: "Oh, silent hill, a movie based on a videogame... Hmm... it's probably a PG/PG-13 movies with a few R-rated words, that hopes to attract an adolescent audience with their R-rating..."?

But wouldn't they atleast bother to pay attention to the God damn trailer? It has been all over the television for the last several months. And don't say maybe they didn't see it... cause I rarely watch tv. RARELY and I saw the trailer more then once.

This movie definitely earns its R-rating - it's not a dressed-up PG-13 by any means. I don't even want to imagine how badly the best scenes would have been butchered to squeeze into a cozy, audience-friendly PG-13.. I remember reading suspicions that the studio was giving it the ol' PG-13 chop, so I've very glad they left the film alone.
...and about parents who brought their young children to see it.. irresponsible. There's no excuse for being ignorant to a film's content, as movie trailers and film reviews are everywhere. Assuming that an R-rated film will be suitable for children because it's based on what they presume to be an innocent video game further proves that many parents are blissfully unaware of what their kids are playing.

-Sahara ---fun
I finally got around to watching National Treasure with Nick Cage, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I love these treasure hunting flicks, and since Harrison Ford is probably going to have to film Indy 4 while on leave from the nursing home, this is some welcome fun.

I watched The Da Vinci Code myself recently. An entertaining ride, but absolutely fucking absurd. The plotline is simply a mess, although the continuing discussion throughout the film of controversial religious theory is rather fascinating. Animation -
Walace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit - Absolutely LOVED it.
Chicken Little: Good. Not GREAT but good.
Corpse Bride: GREAT!! :D
Final Fantasy - Advent Children: Technically Superb, but otherwise mediocre...
Live Action -
Pink Panther - Okay. Not bad, but not good either.
Silent Hill - Good. I wasn't really horrified, but other than that, I liked it.
The Ring 2 - GREAT. Scary, twisted, and to some extent unpredictable.
Dhoom - Better than Doom.
X3 - Absolutely HATED what they did to Juggernaut. Aside from that it was OK.

Glengary Glen Ross- Want a LOT of talking? Here's your movie. Most of the movie takes place in one scene, which makes it feel sorta incomplete, but the idea works. I liked the dialouge, but it just kinda ended with out an ending, sorta.
Nacho Libre: I LOVE this movie! Jack Black is awesome, and for some parts I honestly forgot it was him playing the lead. Except for the singing in the lockeroom scene ,which seemed to just be thrown in to let Jack mess around a couple minutes. Better than Napolean Dynamite, who was made also by Jared Hess.

If you've read the book you're sure to understand more and know what's going on better, but that's with about every movie that's from a book. So if you watch the first two Superman movies and then you watch this one it comes off as a pretty well done sequel. Vertical Limit(Superbit edition): I bought this because of the sheer awesomeness of the visuals and I got just that with this Superbit version. It's not a boring movie, nor a horribly acted one. It's ridiculous in that they carry nitroglycerin up a mountain, and get slammed around a helicopter without the stuff blowing up, but the movie is alot of fun. You're either laughing or starting to feel bad, until the movie thorws in another awesome scene to make sure you laugh once every 3 minutes. Steve Carell is awesome, and I realized that night who Paul Dano was and why he'll probably be a star one day.
Just awesome performances all around, and original ideas around a not so original plot ( quirky family road-trip movie).
I loved this movie!

Watched a number of films in the past while..
Ring ... I'd heard a lot of good things about the Japanese original, but seeing this now after having watched the remake years ago, it had very little impact. Overall, I think the story was handled better with the Americanized edition, and the better production values up the tension of "the videotape" and such. Still worth watching, but inferior to the remake in my opinion.
Lucky Number Slevin ... Bahh. Sure, it was entertaining, but nothing special. An elaborate set-up with poor payoff.
Suicide Club ... I'm not too sure about this one. The over-the-top gore is if anything amusing, and the film can't be easily understood without a fair bit of insight into Japanese culture. Unusual, but not so twisted as to be particularly memorable.
Ichi The Killer ... I'd heard about this one for awhile, all sorts of things having to do with gratuitous violence and general shock value. Yeah, yeah.. they were all pretty well correct. Some very interesting characters, and a moderately light-hearted feel in spite of the fact that utterly terrible things are inflicted upon people.
Primer ... One really interesting film, this one. Watched it, waited a few hours, and watched it again. A very inventive take on the mechanics and consequences of time travel that I highly recommend.
High Tension ... While it drags its feet through the intro, once the atrocious acts of violence begin, this movie just cooks. I was transfixed by the truly shocking things that happen to the hapless victims, but the film stumbles a bit with its plot twist. Horrifying scenes of blood and gore and an atmosphere that lives up to the name.
...And recently rewatched..
Super Troopers ... still hilarious.
Some Kind Of Monster ... still depressing.

How anbout Taxi driver 3 Robbert the niro Ruled in that movie.

Man, what about Time Bandits? Midgets galore and Sean Connery.. the movie has practically everything.
If you like midgets running around I suggest Williow.
Nobody's mentioned The Shawshank Redemption yet. Scarface too seems to have been overlooked. Both Ghostbusters 1 & 2 are excellent. I'm a big fan of The Searchers and Duel.

My favourites would probably be Donnie Darko, the Cowboy Bebop movie, Gladiator and The Lawnmower Man. The list is probably longer but those are the ones that come to mind. Lawnmower Man has a bad reputation but I like the CGI scenes in it.
My friend has The Wall (both the movie and my copy of the CDs), he loves it. I should get him to lend it to me so I can watch.

Have a few faves. Apocolypse Now is a biggie. Always remember when I was a kid watching it for the first time & being haunted by The Doors - The End playing it in. Scarface & Taxi Driver are a couple of others. Recent films I'd have to say Forrest Gump is pretty good.

4. Apocalypse Now Redux

The Exorcist is definatly one of my favs. It is still scary to this day with its great camera work, horrifying music, and how it lingers in your mind.
Why The Evil Dead Trilogy of course. Ash is really just an ordinary guy stuck in this extraordinary situation that only gets worse, including his own stupidity. In the end, the poor guy just wants to go home.

Yes, the creators of Silent Hill have said that Jacob's Ladder was a big inspiration for the creation of the original Silent Hill and the creators are "big fans" of the movie! If you liked that, watch Angel Heart, similar sorta film, but far superior, the film inspired the classic movie, Se7en by David Fincher, Angel heart is said to be one of his all time faves too.

Current favorite list I guess, limiting it to ten movies:
Forbidden Zone -- Great, bizarre Danny Elfman musical. Always entertaining to watch.
Nightmare Before Christmas -- I am a Danny Elfman whore. Still love the movie even though it's been adopted by Hot Topic and goth kids. :(
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure -- Timeless comedy and without 80's "cheese," fashion aside.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- Surprisingly brilliant movie. Love the symbolism and Khan is such a terrific villain.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker -- I love Batman. This is a great film and the best one featuring Batman in any shape or form.
PeeWee's Big Adventure -- Another always enjoyable comedy. Great visuals and terrific Elfman soundtrack.
Hunt For Red October -- I see this as an underwater Wrath of Khan. Great performances and story make it a winner.
Ghost in the Shell -- Not a huge Japanese animation fan (Akira sucks), but this is a smartly written if somewhat slow moving picture that's amazing to look at.
Citizen Kane -- Generally regardless as the best movie ever. I don't know about that, but it is a great movie nonetheless.
Shawshank Redemption -- Wasn't this recently voted the best movie that no one ever pans?

For my own benefit, I've decided to recap all of the 2006 releases I've seen through the year. They all get the out-of-four-star treatment for some reason.
Apocalypto: Engrossing atmosphere and setting. Go in without having brushed up on the actual course of the Mayan civilization, and it makes for quite a show. ***
Beerfest: A serious disappointment - lame, lame humour. Super Troopers was a fluke. *
Blood Diamond: A powerful film. Watch this, and let the subsequent loathing of the diamond trade blossom. ***1/2
Borat: People seem to really enjoy this one. I laughed very little. Not Beerfest bad, but the hype and critical acclaim confused me greatly. *1/2
Casino Royale: The first viewing was quite incredible. The second time around, it's not nearly as strong.. flaws ignored show themselves. Still the finest Bond in quite some time, and I have high hopes for the coming installments. ***
Children of Men: Bloody amazing. From a filmmaking perspective, there are things done here that are damn near impossible in their complexity. From a viewer's perspective, it's bleak, immersive, and completely fantastic. ****
The Da Vinci Code: Preposterous leaps of faith are required to buy into how the plot progresses. Entertaining, but braindead and forgettable. **
Grandma's Boy: Surprisingly hilarious. I had low expectations, and planned to happily bypass this one. I'm glad fate steered this one into the movie viewing regime. ***
Harsh Times: This movie left the deepest impression of anything I've seen all year. Absolutely intense and unforgettable. ****
Jackass: Number 2: Fewer duds than in the original motion picture Jackass. Endearing lowbrow humour. Damned hilarious. ***1/2
Lucky Number Slevin: Stylish, but a pauper's payoff for such a huge buildup. **1/2
Miami Vice: What a barrel of shit. The cast tries so painfully hard to "be cool," yet the result is embarrassingly bad. The plot is an unfocused mess, the characters are forced and shallow, and, to be blunt, it's just fucking boring. *
Pan's Labyrinth: Very good, but I feel it misrepresents itself.. it's far more a post-war drama than a fantasy tale. Surprisingly violent. ***
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: I just didn't buy into it. The lush backdrops, the freakish seamutants, and Jack Sparrow's reckless hijinks are all highlights, but the plot was.. weak. The cliffhanger ending created little in the way of a sense of tension or urgency. Overall, it was entertaining, but not impressive, closely mirroring my opinion of #1. **1/2
Rocky Balboa: Damned inspirational. Definitely a movie to bring you out of a sour mood, and a classy conclusion to a tired franchise. ***
Saw III: The metaphorical deathtraps are the worst yet. The absurdity of the franchise's premise is becoming more prominent with each passing episode. Cheap, gory thrills are all I expected of this, and even then I was let down. *1/2
Silent Hill: Not without its flaws, but there are moments of this film that are as intense as anything I've seen. A sequel would be most appreciated. ***
Snakes on a Plane: Not "so bad it's good," just a shit movie that squandered its potential and hype. It should never have made it to theatres. *
Strangers With Candy: I've yet to watch the television show this is a retelling of, but based purely as a stand-alone movie, I was quite amused. A nice surprise. ***
Superman Returns: Lukewarm. Passable. **1/2
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby: From the previews, I expected hilarity. Instead, it turned out to be Beerfest +1. Failed comedies are especially painful to watch. *1/2
Thank You For Smoking: Charismatic and clever. An excellent movie and highly recommended. ***1/2
V For Vendetta: Very good. ***
I hope to squeeze in several more Oscar contenders before the awards show, but from what I've seen as of now, Children of Men is the strongest of 2006. I sincerely hope it takes some big name awards. I'd love to see Harsh Times get some kind of recognition, but I expect it will not. It has been largely ignored by both audiences and critics alike.

Stan Lee's Lightspeed:
Ugh. Comic to movie translations have officially hit rock-bottom with this one. One of Marvel's lamest properties is even worse as a film. Ridiculously dull all the way through, and some parts just make no sense. Also, Sean Connery's son sucks. This movie wasn't even bad in an entertaining way, it was just boring. Apparently this was produced by the Sci-Fi channel, which is notorious for bad movies, but this was horrible even by their standards. I can't believe they had the audacity to release it on DVD.
Dragon:
This movie rocks. It's like a good fantasy film and a crappy b-movie at the same time. Everything about this is both good and bad, like they couldn't decide whether they were making a serious movie or not. Overall, I was quite entertained by the bad attempts at old english, horrible script, and everything else.

Rocky is a solid show, most definitely. Very uplifting, and a nice reminder that Stallone is a talented dude. As far as franchise revivals go, though, I can't imagine him being able to resurrect Rambo with the same skill.. I still find it hard to believe that's even happening.
I watched Babel last night, a film employing the ol' "several distinct plotlines with no immediately apparent connection" routine. Good points? There's practically zero technobabble for a film set fifty years in the future; it's subtle, believable sci-fi.
Bad points? The plot twist isn't really explained. I can't really go into it without spoiling the film :(
Bottom line? It's a good film, but it still left me with a 'what the fuck' feeling at the end.

28 Weeks Later: thumbs down. The original was all haunting and lonely and desperate; it didn't really need a sequel in the first place. Noooo, suddenly everything has to be left open for a trilogy :(
I mean, I loved how there were cute little touches sprinkled through the first film: Frank and Hannah's Christmas lights, 'THE END IS EXTREMELY FUCKING NIGH', and all that. There's a 'very special' kid as the main character in 28WL, and there's no real character development, just action sequences strung together. It tries so hard - American jets firebombing London streets, convenient not-quite-explanation of how the Rage virus survived the hosts starving, helicopter slicing up a crowd of Infected.
Not a bad movie, just too dissimilar from the original for my liking.

Thanks, Vinny.
The last two movies I've seen are ones my wife bought spontaneously: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Hellboy II.
Indiana Jones 4 was full of cringe-worthy moments (starting with the nuclear explosion in the beginning). The most jaw-droppingingly "COME ON!!!" moment for me, however, was when Indiana felt the need to jump into a very Ross Geller-like lecture detailing the differences between quick sand and dry sand . . . as he was sinking in it. All in all, a complete piece of crap from beginning to end, which not only the fantastic Cate Blanchett could save.
Hellboy II was alright, I suppose. The great thing about the original was it spliced a very mundane, every-man love story with an over-the-top, gothic adventure, with a light sprinkling of subtle, dry humor throughout. Hellboy II, on the other hand, was all over-the-top, and the humor was neither dry nor especially effective. The make-up effects were spectacular, however (especially for Abe).

Watched Disturbia again last night.
Not a bad movie. But I was again left with the same feeling that I got from a handful of other movies, including that blackjack movie with Kevin Spacey: it's a goddamn kid's movie. As soon as I realize that teenagers are the target audience for a particular film, I tend to get pulled out of it.
It was different when I was a teenager (and those movies I enjoyed 10 or 12 years ago are still fine with me today), but now I just find it incredibly distracting.
God, I'm old.
