View Full Version : Forgotten Worlds issues

I have a weird issue when I try to play Forgotten Worlds. It boots fine, and goes through the opening scene, but then when it goes to gameplay, the screen just flashes and then says Game Over. I've tried it repeated times, I've tried blowing on the cart and reinserting it, and I've tried it on two different systems, all with the same result.
What gives? Does this game somehow require a model 1 system or something (even though the TMSS is fine)?

Dude, that's how hard the game is! Nobody's ever been able to beat it.
You are playing with a 6-button controller. Hold MODE when you first turn the system on. Let go when you see the Sega logo. Send me $$$$.

Okay, I tried that just now and it works. Thanks.
That's really weird. Usually when games are incompatible with the 6-button controller, they just have messed up controls.

Wait. THAT'S the problem? I bought this and returned because I thought it was glitched. Damn.

We should have a list of games on this site that require to be played in 3 button mode. I know Ms Pac Man is another one of them.

Yes, that's right, now that you mention it.

Thanks to this post I'm not returning my newly achieved Forgotten Worlds as well...
I had no idea there were issues like this!

Strange. No input registers when I forget to switch modes. Do you use a Majesco 6-button pad or an official Sega one?

You are a smart ass!  I had Forgotten Worlds way back then and when I bought it again a couple months ago, I had the same problem with the 6-button controller glitch. It's been so many years since I knew of this problem that I had to ask the guy on ebay who sold it to me to jog my memory! I'm also surprised that this isn't documented anywhere! Hmmm glitches in Genesis / Megadrive games...now that would make a good feature to write about!

1000+ posts, eh? Can't be me because I've never even OWNED Forgotten Worlds. Evar!
...which is actually worse, I guess.

Strangly the instructions that came with my 6 button years ago does not mention that. I recall a small piece of paper added that mentions it that looked like it was added at the last minute.
Wow... I got a copy of this game recently and the same thing happened, but knowing of the 6-button issues-with-games thing, I guessed it was the same problem and worked it out myself*, just 3 days ago!
They're both 2-player as well, which makes it more annoying. "You need to hold the mode button. Yes, I know it's annoying. No, I don't know why. Just do.. did you stop? Well now it won't work.
See, told you it wouldn't work.
Oh, just wait and I'll get another controller..."
Curious - anyone know any technical reasons for this??
*Not that I'm smug, or anything. 'Hem.

I figured the answer out myself because I know Forgotten Worlds had worked on my system before the 6-button controller. The controller was the only thing that changed. AH! That damn mode button. It operates kind of weirdly since you must hold it down when you switch the system on as opposed to the PC Engine 6-button controller where you can constantly switch back and forth between the two modes (most games won't run properly in 6-button mode on that system).
Yeah, I'd played it through with a friend on my trusty old MD some time ago, so at first I thought it might be the machines I was using (Nomad / Multimega). Then I had a brainwave & tried the Mode button thing, same as Golden Axe 2, & voila :)
Don't know where I learned about that - I've a feeling it says something on the manual that came with one of my 6 button pads - no idea where that's gone to though, so can't check!
Btw, I always found it annoying you can't switch between the modes like that, for one reason - Mortal Kombat 2. I prefer the 6 button layout, but since I'd played the game for a while before I got the new pad I memorized all the moves & stuff for 3 button, always wished I could just switch to 3 button for the fatalities - ah well, ramble :)

Ha Ha, I bought two copies of this game because of this thinking i was going mad, (how can they both be broken in the same way goddam it!). I still have not played the genesis version, I went ahead and got the pc engine version which i play and enjoy. Ima try this mode button thing when i get home.

King of the Monsters doesn't like 6 buttons either.
