I bought a copy of sonic 1 for my megadrive recently. The problem is, it wont run (screen stays black after turning on the md or turns red). I already cleaned the contacts of the module, doesnt helped. Can i do anything else ?

Try some other Games dude. Perhaps check if the sonic is regionally right(it shouldnt say genesis if its megadrive but you should probably know that;) ). Also, Are the vid cables hooked up right? Does the power light come on? good luck man.I always hate to see broken hardware.

Are you sure you have the Mega Drive game Sonic the Hedgehog, and not one of the gazillions of other versions available out there? They DON'T work on a Mega Drive, especially not the GBA version!
If you DO have a Mega Drive cart of Sonic and it doesn't work, I assume it is the cart itself to blame. Buy a new one for a buck or so. You can even buy the Genesis version, as it has no region lock built in it.

The game is for pal megadrive, and the console is a pal megadrive. I have a lot of other games (i.e. Sonic 2, wonderboy in monsterworld,...) they all work. I can sure get a new copy on ebay, but i just wanted to make sure that i have tried everything (open the cartridge and cleaning inside wouldnt help, right).

In several games, red screen = checksum error (this indicates that the cartridge booted)
black screen = hang
Seems the cart is really dirty or damaged, sorry.
Do you have a capacitor on the cart board? Some ppl may have plug the cartridge on the wrong side (in a asian megadrive for exemple) and it may have fried.

my sonic 1 occansionally will come up with a black screen but my snic 1 is really dusty so thet might be the case. the only time i got a redscreen was when i played mortal kombat 3 and after i cheaked the contacts i found dust around the rim of the cartridge so try cleaning them

Give it the old "NES Blowjob".
Blow into that cart like the world depends on it........then do it again.
Clean it, blow on it, blow on it again, clean, then pray that screen doesn't blink (or in this case, remain black).
Boy the NES was a pain in the ass.

its a checksum error when you get the red screen, and it hasnt loaded when it's the black screen. you can fix the checksum in a rom but its likely that the cart you got is a dodgey pirate, so unless you have the equiptment on your computer to edit the hardwre, i recomend you just play roms or buy a new cart...

Dark & Long is right. Just keep cleaning the bastard! :D
I had the same problem with my newly purchased (very mistreated!)copy of Kenseiden for the Master System. Cleaned the contacts 4 times, but still got a black screen. When I got them cleaned for the 5'th time, it suddenly worked just fine. So just hang in there ;)
