View Full Version : How do you feel about your heritage?

Just did some research in my family history. Searched name databases, immigration records, and examined my memories closely.
It seems EVERY SINGLE branch of my heritage(that I care for) has been oppressed.
Also been UTTERLY DENIED by all members until myself and my sister.

Wi*****. Always told we're Bavarian on that side. I look at my dad, his family, their behaviors and physical characteristics...They're half Jewish at least. Wink1er is more of an EASTERN European name. They're all dark hairded and kinda short and stocky and really hairy. We all complain and argue alot and we're good at it. I USED TO SEND HALF MY FOOD BACK.
***wicz. Also alleged to be Bavarian.
WHAT???? IT TAKES A POLAK TO KEEP THEIR POLAK NAME AND SAY THEY'RE NOT A POLAK. Half of that side is 3 generations out of Norway, though.
Fe*****. Alleged to be mostly French Canandian and a liiiiittle Irish.
It's an Irish name, grandfather had red hair until it went shocking white at 30, they were Catholic, he was an alcoholic steel worker and union man.

My family is a mass of stereotypes in denial.

Some raise pigs(polaks).
The rest of that clan lived a bit further out on a small corn farm, but they've aged and passed on over time.
They used to serve me pickled watermelon rinds.
WHAT? Is it a Polish thing???

The Irish is out of Canada a couple generations(can you really blame a Catholic Irish family for hiding their heritage in an English Province?) and ended up in a suburb of St Paul.

Wi*****. Great(great great?) Grandfather was raised in an orphanage in the 1930s.
Who knows, but he came out of Wisconsin.

I feel pride about most of what I've found, but I don't take most of it too seriously.
A good portion of the above is meant to be ironic, but hold enough truth to hold together.

Do you care about yours?
Do you fell good about all of it? Most of it?
Some of it?

My dad was a soldier, and I'll make sure my kids know that as well as whatever I can tell them about the above...

Yes. Even though my family is very odd.

I found out most of my family crap, and why my family is rather odd when I was young, but I forgot most of it. FWIW... there's next to nobody left on my dad's side of the family. Except me, my dad, my aunt, and grandma. I think my aunt is an awful person as she embezzles money from my grandma, still lives with her at 56 years of age, and treats grandma like a slave. I think my aunt may have aspbergers like me...

My mom's family, well... I don't see most of them, and don't resemble them at all. Who IS living lives down south and I don't like 'em. All a bunch of rich drunks. My grandma on my mom's side has been married twice. I don't know a damn thing about my mom's real father... everything I did hear was when I was little, and that wasn't much. Grandma destroyed every known photo, so I'll never know what he looks like. He sounded like a swell fella. He died in Atlanta, sometime in 1987 from causes that I forget. I don't know why him and grandma got divorced -- evading vietnam draft is likly? My grandma on my mom's side is a nut too. She left my "Grandpa" well, my mom's step dad eariler this year to romance an old class mate. Well, the classmate dumped her, and grandpa kicked her out. Dunno what, or what she is doing, but I was never suprised when they broke up.

My mom's step dad is a good man. Hard working, and is one of the few step fathers who actually cares about his partners extra baggage (children) I'm named after him. So yeah... ironic. I later found out his real age, because it was never discussed, but I found out when my grandpa told some people at my graduation party. And it's the same age as my dad. Now, my grandma married a younger man. When they married, he was 28, and she was 35 when they married.

Everything above is ironically stated but true.
My father complains COSNTANTLY, but has some Norway in him as well, so he wants to DO SOMETHIGN ABOUT IT. GRAAA!!! But then his Jewish guilt gets ahold of him, send him on his own trip, and he apologises...
I'll never tell him he's Jewish. I mentioned the fact that I'm somehwat proud of my Irish haritage, small as it may be(thought it was less at the time) and he looked at me like I'd asked him if he wanted to go toke up.
Yeah. He just wants to be a white American.

Basically I'm saying my family's fucked up, too.
OOOh the stories I'd tell if they hadn't been resolved in the end...

My dad enisted in the Air Force, served at an air base on Guam, and returned a respected Sergeant.
I'd like to imagine my Irish ancestors were some of the many deported after the rising in '16.
It would just be kinda cool...
Don't get me wrong, I'm no POVO, PIRA et al backer. I DO however support the Irish in that first conforntation, and would be proud of my great great granddad.
I'm learning the language now, and I hope to go there next year, unless I feel confident I can find work in Japan at that time.
Then it's in 3 years.

Don't care much about my heritage. No matter what, I'm still me.

I'm English. Seeing as we've been invaded by pretty much everyone (the Romans, Vikings, Scots, French, Daleks, Cybermen...) I don't think I have any special heritage.

I am decended from both Vikings, Angles and Daleks.

I can't stand this genealogy crap. I don't like the family that I have living (one of my Grandmothers is Davros) why the hell would I want to know about the dead ones?

Well, don't forget the countries England invaded...

"why the hell would I want to know about the dead ones?"
Forgetting where you cmoe from makes it hard to determine where you're going.

It's a universal truth. Also, you might find a relative you DO like, and thus have SOME sense of family, even if its not with the ones you have now.

I feel good about my heritage. I'm a descendant of the Germanic tribe Suiones. They are the people who made Mälar Valley their home, which after centuries of hard work and establishment became Svithiod, and later, Sweden. I have done almost nothing to improve Sweden yet, except for some tax paying.

This is not meant to be poking fun at you, more to show I know virtually no Scandanavian language (and my German is weak).
Every time I read something in Swedish I hear Skwisgaar Skwigelf saying it.

Annoying fact about msyelf:
I have a bad habit of taking on the accents of people I talk to.
Started because I found if I spoke English with a Japanese accent I'd be better understood by Japanese people when I had to.
I had to keep holding back when I was talking to some native Irish folks the other day...but I think they noticed...

I'm German and French. Wrap your brain around that one!
I think I do have SOME plain German.
But combine that with the Jewish, Irish, French and Norwiegen...no wonder everyone in my family hates themselves!!
I mean, if I was part English as well, I think I'd implode.

I'm about half and half German and Hungarian. Nothing particularly interesting, except the Hungarian language itself, being only distantly related to languages spoken around Hungary.

He's on my ignore list, he knows it, yet he follows me around replying to my posts.
Thus I click to see if who's posted and I see THIS guy's the only one, and there's nothing to read.

It's annoying, he's annoying, but at least this way I don't have to read what he's trying to be MORE annoying by saying(I dislike how inarticulate I can be... -_-).

Sadly I don´t know much about my ancestors. I do know I´m German from both family sides, and my parents´names give a good explanation of my ancestors´ occupations: Brettschneider (Board-cutter) and Krieger (warrior). I do bear a Hungarian second name however, a name I got through my mothers´marriage before I was born. This name I´m carrying comes from aristocracy. I even have a coat of arms because of that, and one of this families supporters once killed a polish queen in a struggle for power.
Unfortunately most of my relatives are dead and so I know very few details of my own blood. I do know my mother´s side of the family came from Prussia, that is officially non-existant today. It was a wealthy family, but everything that was valuable was buried when my family had to flee from home after WW 2.

My family names give ...jack.
From the 'German' Side: "Works on a corner." ...and it comes from like 10 different countries....
From the obvious Polish side:
I have no flippin' idea. I don't even know what language it's from. How many times has Poland been conquered? Always?
I don't remember the Norwiegen ones.

The one that would have been helpful is the Irish one. The problem is it was Agnlesized(SPELLING PROBLEM) when they came to Canada.
So it's probably also got some French influence in it's spelling...

If I'm on his ignore list, why does he keep replying with nonsense like "Silence..."? There is no reason to reply at all. Maybe he is retarded? Since I am on ignore, he'll never know I said that, but he'll undoubtedly keep posting lame replies like "crickets.. ooooh the crickets in my thread!!" that nobody gives a shit about.

By the way, I reply to what I want. Gzeus isn't the only person who reads this forum. If I have something to say, I will say it whether I am on someone's ignore list or not. It's a public discussion. What a retard.

Ayup, and that is another mystery. Have you seen how far apart Finland and Hungary are? Neither have nearby linguistic relatives.

The same reason I am replying to your post; to expand on the discussion, not necessarily talk directly to you.

My surname is French (French great-great-grandmother I think), so I guess it gives my English side something to bicker with :D

I'm Irish and Native American (Creek), though you can see the Irish influence much better than anything else. I'm proud of both lines of my heritage.
