I just ordered a Sega CD and two games that I want to get are Eternal Champions and Adverntures of Batman and Robin. Are these the same games as the Genesis version? Would the CD versions be recommended over the carts?

From what I've heard Batman & Robin is nothing like the cartridge version, just another crappy FMV game. Eternal Champions is downright fantastic, get it and don't even think twice about it. It's a fantastic improvement.

For the sake of some balance, I hated Eternal Champions from day one. It is a mere smoldering, barely-glowing ember of a fighter compared to works from SNK.

But of course, EC fans swear by the game so all the power to them.

Actually, Batman and Robin is NOTHING like the cartridge version. The game conissts of all driving sequences and animated cut scenes. The drving scenes, although still somehwat pretty, has pretty bad controls. The animated cutscenes, however, are done byt the same animators who did the actual animated TV show. Not only is this some of the best FMV sequences on the Sega CD (full screen too), it's like having an extra unaired episode of the series. I got the game just for the cutscenes :) The "game" itself is pretty bad though. As for Eternal Champions, I always felt is was very overrated.

I thought EC was way, way better than anything SNK released before KOF94, hell it's the best Street Fighter clone of its time. All the fun gore from Mortal Kombat but twice as playable.

OMG, even better than Samurai Shodown 1? The inarguable classic Samurai Shodown 2?

Eternal Champions manages to hold up better on the Sega CD than it ever did on the Genesis.

It's still hard, but you are not penalized as harshly for losing a match in tournament mode. You merely have to continue, not fight the 2 previous oponents.

The CD version adds some grainy (yet still nice) CG cutscenes for character deaths and Endings. 4 more starting characters, a tweaked movelist, about 7 hidden characters, redbook soundtrack, and extra modes.

It's one of the better fighting games of its time.
But appart from Mortal Kombat, every figher franchise of the age has improved beyond it.

Go get it, but be prepared to invest some time, and keep an open mind.

Having owned a NEO AES for the last 13 years, and playing almost all the fighters on it, I'm too spoiled to like any other batch of fighters, 2D or 3D.

Garou, Real Bouts, Last Blade 1,2, some KOF's, Samurai Shodown series... technically, artistically, and inarguably some of the finest fighters ever designed. I just can't stand to play anything else besides some Capcom CPS1,2 based fighters.

Too bad the CD soundtrack wasn't even half as interesting as the cartridge counterpart.
