im thinking of buying one of these to play pal games on my sega genesis but I was wondering, how well do these work? I once bought a converter cart with region switches that did not work at all so thats why im asking about this one. any input on its performance is appreciated.

I have a game genie but I could not get some of my later japanese imports to work or the pal game I have. the japanese imports arnt a problem anymore since I just went ahead and bought a cheap used japanese megadrive about 4 months ago. the only pal game I own at the moment is megaman: the wily wars. eventually id like to get alien soldier and street racer extra in pal and a few others I havent decided on yet. but even when I try some of the region bypass codes I still get that message on the screen about the game being for megadrive systems only, so thats why id like to look into a megakey adaptor. the only thing im really wondering about them is how well they work.

I only have the original Mega Key, which supports USA / Japan / Brazil regions, but it has always worked well enough. The only problem is, these units are made of cheap materials and are prone to damage if used frequently.

I dont think id be using it too frequently since I still have yet to get the rest of the pal games im after so I dont think damage would be much of a issue for me, is $48 about the average price for a megakey? or is that too much?

Hell, I had to buy my Mega Key included with a complete PAL Megadrive 2 system, because eBay kept pulling all of the auctions which listed a Mega Key by itself.
$48 is worth it if you think it's worth it. Don't think of rarity, don't think of collectability... think of how often you're going to use the thing.

now that I think about it, either way the megakey is cheaper then importing a pal megadrive because of shipping costs to the us. I did manage to find one since I missed the $48 megakey it was a bit on the expensive side though at $67.
I wasnt really thinking of rarity or anything like that when I was asking about the pricing, I was just curious since im a bit iffy about buying a converter again after getting a dud 5 years ago for $59 that didnt work even though it had region switches. I did decide to go for the $67 unopened super megakey from the uk so hopefully that one works unlike the other converter I had.
oddly enough the last converter I had was called a "megakey 3" but it didnt work at all with any of my region lockout games.

You'll have to buy expensive equipement if you want to use a PAL console in the US. I know they made video converters for PAL -> NTSC and you may need a AC converter or something like that.

I just bought one and I love it. Its pricey, but I prefer it to a game genie which didn't work with every Mega Drive game. It also looks sexy setting on top on my genny with Curse in it. It also works with every Mega Drive game I've tried so far.

Actually, you can use a Commodore 1702 monitor and connect the PAL system directly. The picture won't flip, but you will be reduced to black & white. :(
The PAL->NTSC adaptors generally aren't so expensive, and they aren't so much "equipment" as they are minorly annoying adaptors.
you may need a AC converter or something like that.
When I bought my PAL Megadrive 2, it came complete with both a mains AC adaptor and a normal (US-style) adaptor. So, I shrugged and used the one I was familiar with. No problems. Of course, I suppose I could've secretly been damaging the system somehow, but if I was, it never showed it.
Of course, the AC converter is a very cheap purchase; one can be had for as low as 99 cents, so that's no problem.

I went to gshi.com and it is some sort of global trading nonsense. No Game Genie codes to be found or requested anywhere.

Can you post a couple of images of it? I'd love to get my hands on one of these and crack it open, just to see how it works.

to get NTSC-50, use an NTSC 32X.. it'll work, trust me..
If you want PAL 50 from a NTSC 60 Genesis, you need to modify the video circuit, replacing the crystal, because the color phase is wrong (or something to that effect)...

HI all, I was wondering, which Genesis/MegaDrive games needs the region lock nullified? I mean, I know earlier games could work with the Megadrive/Genesis. But later at a certain date, Sega decided to put locks on. I'm asking b/c I am buyin Bare Knuckle 1 and 2 for the Megadrive (JPN version), and I have Genesis and a regular game converter.

In regards to this item, what other names does it go by, how much does it cost, and where can I get one?
Oh, and I have a cartridge that reads "For Use With NTSC and French and Secam Megadrive Systems Only" or something like that. Is this a Japanese game or European game? The label has been ripped off the cartridge, the shape looks Japanese/Asian, but I know that some people screw with the cartridges (open them and put other things inside them). Do let me know. Thanks.

It probably says "For use with PAL and French Secam Mega Drive systems only" because PAL and Secam belong to the same region. I would think it is a Asian game, because the Asian region has the Japanese cartridge shape and use PAL.

I think Japanese games are NTSC, and Europe + Australia are Pal.
One thing, again, does anybody know where I can find this Super Mega key thing-a-ma-jig?
