View Full Version : Interview: Fonzie Voltnov
There have been some efforts over the last few years to finish up and release those few Sega CD titles that never made it to market, such as the ChuChu Rocket inspired Mighty Mighty Missile, and most recently Burning Fists: Force Striker. These two made their appearances on the Sega CD as commerical releases published by Good Deal Games (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/../Interview-%20Michael%20Thomasson.php) and can be purchased from them, along with a few other Sega CD rarities. Sega-16 recently had the chance to talk to one of the people involved with these two games, as well as the great new Mega Cart by Tototek, Fonzie Voltnov. He shared his experiences on after-market products for the Genesis and Sega CD, as well as some upcoming projects. Read the full interview (http://www.sega-16.com/2007/03/interview-fonzie-voltnov/) for the whole scoop!

Thanks a lot, ary!
Melf, how could you censore ALL my great jokes I put in that interview? The Tetris conspiracy, my baking skillz and the illegal Swedish government! They were all great additional filler in between those regular questions, I just had to include something more! And you shouldn't have put it up before consulting me and/or Fonzie about it - I'm not even sure he's gonna grant it. :furious:

Thanks for a great interview, Zebbe!
@Fonzie
You say you need background artists? I would love to try if you like! What exactly do you need?

Haha, yeah, the plop one was great :D
Thx for this interview, i had lot of fun to answer questions.

Backgrounds better than any other 16bit rpg, easy ;P The engine is possibly the most powerfull (because it allocate more memory to backgrounds) one so there is no reason we can't do it.
If you have some skills at background drawing (caves, dungeons, city, forest...),
you're very welcome to help, just PM me :)

So, it looks like I´ve got a chance to help with a real Mega Drive RPG!:p

I look forward to tons of Mega Power!
The most interesting thing was the SMS compatibility originally planned for the Mega Cart. If it is a simple operation to have it work through the 32X, I would love to see this come to fruition. Game Gear compatibility might be tough since it has 4096 colors, and 32X coding isn't exactly "easy" from what I hear. But if you could incorporate the FM sound channels that the SMS used in Japan into the cart, that would be even more awesome. It can be done, and many US and EU SMS games still have the FM soundtracks in the cart, but obviously they play on PSG-only systems so we can never hear them.

I cut two of them out for length, since they kind of rubbed with the flow of the narrative. One is still there as an editor's note.
And you shouldn't have put it up before consulting me and/or Fonzie about it -
I could have sworned I sent you the proofread version and got the green light. If I'm mixed up, then I apologize. We've had a ton of reader submissions lately, and in the process of getting them laid out and approved, I may have goofed.
Sorry about that. :(

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It keeps me going ;).
Joe Redifer: Something similar to what you seek can be found HERE (http://www.smspower.org/GenderAdapter/). I don't understand why the PBC can't use the Mega Drive's YM2612 chip instead of the JPN Master System's YM2413. Getting a JPN Master System seems like a pain, so I think an adaptor like you suggested would be better.
Melf: I never received any proofread version or sent an approvement to you. I think there could have been more and better pictures too, for example the one of Fonzie himself instead of Teenage Queen, which he doesn't even work on. And that stuff about GDG and Burnings Fists wasn't included. Anyway, what is done is done, it is still quite good and thanks for putting it up. Could you edit the Mega Cart article so it says the Mega/Sega CD I actually works with CD-Rs, except the Japanese version as Fonzie said? It is mentioned twice.
How about getting someone more proofreading stuff, updating etc.? May be a tough decision for you who have created and run this site for nearly three years, but with the right man the site can become even better. I don't mean to be negative here, but it is hard to get in contact with you at times. :blah:

Actually, that's not a horrible idea, but honestly, I can't think of someone much better than a college professor to proofread the sites work.

True, but the updating takes some time too. Getting pictures, linking, have it on the home page, starting forum thread... Takes time, but not too tough for anyone responsible (like you, maybe?) to do.

i love the support showed to the genesis devers. And what a useful comment, you just pissed me off, it just show how narrow minded you're !!
You just deserve that i stop working on megadrive (let me remind you that i'm doing it for free), and believe me TQ was just a appetizer in comparaison of what i'm about to release. but why i would reward ungrateful guys like that...
anyway great interview, and thanks fonzie for the support, you're the true motor of this scene

Apology accepted. :)
I actually think it's pretty cool what you're doing with Teenage Queen, even though I'm not particularly a fan of that genre. More Genesis games can't be a bad thing, right?

Why does everyone but Fonzie want to make a surprise of what is next?
