I just got this for my anniversary last week, and am really enjoying it. I'm right at the part where you have to choose paths after the house assault with Luis. I chose the Bella Sisters and they killed me right quick.

I love everything so far, but there's one thing I don't understand. Why did they take away the combine ability in the menu for weapons and bullets? It's a major pain in the ass having to see Leon stand there and load his shotgun while hoardes of machete-wielding Ganados bear down upon him. Capcom might have thought that it would be innovative to make you buy reload speed, but it's really just a pain in the ass.

You're really going to be mad...

I took BOTH paths after the Louis fight.
Great money...and it's also neccessary too...

I can understand why they make you reload.
Having the quick reload would give you too much of an edge in battle. Especially since they now tell you how much ammo is left in your weapon.
It figures into your ability to keep track of how much ammo you've used so you can reload yourself to avoid messy situations.

A blast of a game, Resident Evil 4. It may piss of the Resident Evil hardcore elite, but I find that the extensive weapon upgrading adds a much-needed level of depth.

Melf, hopefully the game is going well. My first time through it was awesome.

I'm already at the big bruiser who likes to grab Leon by the throat (forgot his name). The Bella Sisters were badass, but my incendiary grenades and souped-up shotgun made them my bitches. :)

Oh yeah, ol' Mendez.. Shouldn't be that bad. The shotgun is your friend!
The gondola ride leading up to that was a bit of a chore. I insisted on NOT buying the rifle, because clearly I am a man of limited intelligence.

I managed to do the gondola part without the rifle.
It was tricky, but it is rather easy if you have either the Stocked-Red9 or the....that one gun that penetrates.

One thing you should know about mendez is that his head IS NOT the weak point. Sorry if I spoiled anything.

Yeah, I used the Punisher hand gun for my first time on the gondola, and did manage it, but it took an annoying number of tries to make it through axewound free. That bit's all about accurate aiming over a large expanse, and the pistols are a bit hard to manage at extreme range seeing as the laser pointer fades into nothingness. I wanted to bypass the bolt-action rifle completely and wait for the inevitable rifle mk. 2, which I did go through with, at the expense of frustration and wasted time. Ah well.. Peseta is precious..

The Red9 is the most accurate pistol in the game.
You just aim...no shakey jittering or anything.
and the firepower caps at 5, so the slower fireing rate is easily remidied.

Only problem is that you need the stock which takes up 3 slots...
and the gun itself takes up an extra 2.

There has been argument upon argument on the Resident Evil 4 GameFAQ board on which pistol dominates, and it always comes down to Red 9 vs. Blacktail, with each gun having pretty much an equal number of supporters. I prefer the Red 9 out of the Blacktail.. the Blacktail is a little too generic and balanced for my liking. Still, my heart lies with the standard handgun.. it's exclusive gives it a x4 chance for critical headshots. While your aim is a bit shakier with the standard handgun, your accuracy is greatly rewarded once you bump it up to that level, allowing you to save ammo (not that you really need to) and slaughter Ganadaos in the most satisfying way second to the headcrusherin' suplex.

My reasons for digging up this ancient thread were twofold:

1). I wanted to see if it would annoy anyone

2). I wanted to perform an interest check on the pending Resident Evil 5, which was one of the main reasons I purchased an XBox 360

I'm a little iffy on RE5. I loved RE4 and all (and I've enjoyed all the RE games except Zero, Survivor, and Gaiden), but I dunno, something about RE5 just makes me not totally on-board. More of a wait-and-see for me.

I have to agree, I too have a feeling of foreboding about RE5. I think we are being set up for a fall. Somethings off about it. ...

It is indeed a great game. Which system did you buy it for?

Gamecube originally, and then I caved and got the Wii version for the PS2 content and the motion controls (which I, for one, couldn't be happier with).

As for RE 5, if capcom could promise more of the same, I would be 100% on board. However, the more they talk about 2 player functionality, the more I worry that they are going to try to turn it into Resident Evil 4: Zero.

RE was once my favorite videogame franchise. I was really drawn into it when part 1 arrived, and the wait for part 2 was a torture.

However, I think RE 4 did not add depth to the game, it reduced it by killing off most of the puzzle elements and the atmosphere by focusing on non-stop-action.

RE has transformed from a great horror adventure to a great splatter-shooter. I think Kotaku had a nice article about the end of survival horror; Capcom has chosen to westernize RE, making it another shooter like so many others.

So no, I am not looking forward to it. RE is dead.

The co-op play is actually what interests me most about RE 5. I hope it works out.

I'm actually nervous about playing it on the 360 or PS3, the Wii controls got their hooks into me. It was just soooooo easy to shoot whatever part of the body I desired. I've always been a bit shaky with dual analogue control.

Westernizing something means destroying it, doesnt it ? :(

Resident Evil 4 will go down as one of the greatest games of all time. It is utterly awesome from start until finish. Although it certainly is a different style of game to Resident Evils 1-3, that is no was tarnishes what is an all-round fantastic game.

Of course not, it is a great game. But why did Capcom call it Resident Evil 4? They could have turned it a spin-off or so, and still give the many fans of the old style their adventures.
Itīs like Sega saying now they bring Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on Mega Drive, and it will be a beatīem up instead of a jumpīn run. Sure, it can be great, but not really a sequel to itīs predecessors.

I like RE4 quite a lot but 108 Stars is correct they modified it to the point where it became splatter-House with a gun.

MrMatthews
10-14-2008, 02:41 PM
All good points, sure.

However, if they had kept it the same as the first three games in the series, everyone would have renewed their complaints about the controls and probably would have written off the series, for the most part.

And they tied the story into the existing canan enough for me to accept it as a natural progression of the overall RE lore (in a nutshell, Wesker is searching for a replacement for the T-virus after umbrella went down and Leon Kennedy happened to be there).

I assume that the story for RE5 will continue along those lines

I hope we see more of Wesker in RE5 instead of just a cameo in RE: Code Veronica and a silly mini-game in RE4.

I really hope they change his character design too. If anyone played the Mercenary Mini-Game with Wesker he looks like a skinny nerd when I think he should be kind of built like Chris Redfield or Leon. I mean just picture him in the beginning movie of RE1 (Live action). Thats the Wesker we need!

I hated that Wesker. No offense.

I'm okay with a lanky Wesker, because even the skinny ones can be badass. You know who would be a cool Wesker? Christian Bale.

I advocate a more normal looking Wesker but I agree with getting Christian Bale for the part.

Maybe after Mr. Bale is done getting into domestic violence lawsuits with his family members they should remake all the PIECE of CRAP Resident Evils and actually follow the freakin storyline for once.

Everyone in Hollywood should be fired.

No SHIT.

You know what the first Resident Evil had? You know what the second, third, and fourth games had? A GODDAM story! The plot's right there, you mindless cretins, so all you have to do is adapt it to a script!

I did kinda like the chicks they found for Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, though.

You want a cast for Resident Evil? Here it is: (sorry, i'm usually really good with names, but I've forgotten all of them right now)

Chris Redfield:
The guy who played Cyclops in the X-Men movies. As long as he didn't grin like an idiot throughout the whole thing.

Albert Wesker:
Take your pick - Christian Bale, the guy from Sweet Home Alabama and the first Hulk movie, or the actor who's playing the new James Bond.

There is only one way, and that is the actors from the original intro. They pretty much defined the characters for me. I know, most think these movie scenes were lame etc, but I liked them, and the actors did no bad job...save maybe for Joseph.
Funny thing is that Capcom once replied, when asked about the actors of RE 1, that they just didnīt know who they are. Itīs been more than 10 years, and they say they have no record of the actorīs identity. And the guys seen in the movie sequences are not the same as the ones who did the voice over.
BTW, about Wesker looking too skinny: that is still better than how Chris looks in the new RE game. It seems like Chris has gone into bodybuilding and massive consume of anabolika since Code Veronica..

I personally like the average built much more than that super-muscular type.

For the story it really canīt get any lamer than RE 4, so maybe part 5 will be better in that spect. But damn, my favorite character has always been Barry, and he seems quite popular with RE-fans overall. I hope he gets some stage time too.

Thats freakin hilarious.

I remember in the ending credits of RE1 they didnt even put their last names. Also you must know that in the American version they cut out the title scene where Chris Redfield was smoking (Hence why he has a Lighter in the beginning).

I would think if you had to call back the actor to tape the scene over again you would at least need to know his contact information. Also the girls look like they were from "Saved by the Bell".

I definitley like the sprite types from RE: Code Veronica the best for Chris and Wesker. They actually looked normal other than the new RE5 steroid addict Chris Redfield (who many fans didn't even know who the hell he was in the first previews) or the skinny body / big head Geek type Wesker.
