View Full Version : Hands-On: Comix Zone Music Sampler
Those who snagged a sealed copy of Comix Zone back in 1994 found a neat little extra inside. Sega and American Recordings included a free music sampler with a dozen songs from some of the popular artists of the era. There was something for everyone, from Danzig to Jesus and Mary Chain, and you had to admit that including it with the game was a cool gesture. This was back at a time when such things were few and far between. So how good was it? Staff writer Vince Thornburg has the full scoop, so read the article (http://www.sega-16.com/2007/04/hands-on-comix-zone-music-sampler/) and find out.

I don't think I could be bothered to listen to something like that. Remember the two music CDs they included with the Sega CD hardware? One of them was a CD+G, but they were both pretty damn bad. Cut costs for Sega I am assuming, since it is considered advertising.

My european exta-disc version don't have the same track list (or at least, not the same names):
-Hundred of knifes
-... i don't remember... Ok I'll try to find the disc.

Where'd you find the Laika pic? I couldn't find next to anything on them.

I agree with Joe that I will never listen to something like that (just not my type of music), and that applies to the two music CDs included with the Sega CD hardware. I think the most I did was preview the tracks one time and either threw the CD's away or put them away for good (cannot even remember where they are now).

That isn't the CD included with the European version; here is the track list.
1) Into the zone
2) Feed my Disease
3) 10,000 Knives
4) Seen It For Days
5) Woe Is The World
6) Last To Follow
The CD is made in Germany, and it's copyright (c) 1995 Sega Enterprises Ltd. Tim P. - Vocals, Howard Drossin - Guitar, Wierd Guy - Bass Guitar, David Harte - Drums, Phillip Stevenson - Guitar solos on 2 and 5, Roger Hector - Executive Producer. Track 1 is the Options Screen Comix Zone music, 10,000 Knives is Level Three (the Rockies level), I think. I could rip and upload some short samples, if you like?
Oh, and the CD comes in a small plastic packet, not a special holder or anything. Comix Zone is a blue-box game too :)
edit: It's a very good, if short, CD. I've no idea whether it's related to the American 'SEGA TUNES: Comix Zone' CD, though.

I've ripped and uploaded ~30 second samples of the entire European audio CD here. (http://h1.ripway.com/Elusive/Music/Comix%20Zone%20sampler/index.html)

I think there was a music CD or two like this included with the initial US Saturn launch as well. Sega sure likes their promo music CDs.

this is the cd came with the PC version Comix Zone in the US

I had that one and a B&W one, but I figured you'd like color better. :)
The Euro version is the same as the Sega Tunes release, right? It's the actual music from the game, composed by Drossin himself.

It's the same one. I hated it because of the vocals added to the songs. As great a rock soundtrack Comix Zone has, the arranged songs on the disc make it just sound like some passable Nirvana-inspired grunge band. The melodies are still pretty great though.
Anyway, that CD+G disc that came with the Sega CD was pretty nice. At least I like Infomation Society, and it had Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac on it for better or worse. I remember some rap song on track six of the regular CD disc and some song with "Lizard" in the title or band name. Too lazy too look it up and really don't care. :p

Hmm. I wonder if we got 'our' version because of some licensing clause?
Comix Zone is on the Wii's Virtual Console, right? A pumped-up version on the XBOX Live Arcade would be pretty cool.

I really like my CD! Right now I've got a load of Nirvana stuff in my Amazon basket, but from what I've heard everyone starts off with them at some point. Can anyone recommend any artists with a similar sound?
edit: It's kind of explained in-game and in the manual that Sketch is a 'starving freelance artist', as well as being a musician on the side. That's so 90s :p

Foo Fighters I'm partial to their first two albums myself.
Also check out some Smashing Pumpkins...Gish, Pisces Iscariot, Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Not sure if you would like Stone Temple Pilots, give them a listen if you want.
