As much of a fondness the public has for mature-themed games with violence and evil activities, there will always be a place for happy games. These are not necessarily "kiddie" games (I hate that adjective), just games that bring you to a positive state whenever you play them, be it through humour or general charm. Is your heart a blackened stone of hatred? These games'll fix that right up.

-Little Ninja Brothers, NES
-Panic Restaraunt, NES
-Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures, SNES
-Jumping Flash!, PlayStation
-The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Playstation
-Tomba!, Playstation

What games comfort your soul?

No we don't!

I second Paper Mario, and add Animal Crossing to that list. I never thought fishing and fossil hunting could be so much fun!

I also love Castle of Illusion and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Dude quit the trolling already, Jesus.

As for me the games that are cute, cheery, or light hearted that I enjoy would have to be Ristar, Tempo (game is too much fun), Castle of illusion, Mickey Mania, and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Now, if I were to take the "lift your spirits" statement of the thread title to imply games that put me in a state of bliss and truly make me happy to be a gamer, the one game that always does that for me is Snatcher. I want more games with truly mature themes, adult situations, and adult humor. Not pseudo-mature like GTA but intelligent games like Persona 1 & 2, Shin Megami Tensei Noctune, etc.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan. Their franchises are some of the best ever. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby.. who can say no to those?

Still, this is after all a Sega-themed forum, and there has always been animosity between the two companies. Sure, they get along now, but during the years of their console competition, they did not play nice. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if someone genuinely does not like Nintendo made games, so be it.

The majority of criticism Nintendo receives today is, in my opinion, mostly justified. Their first-party games are not nearly as fresh as they once were, and the Gamecube is honestly not performing as well as the PS2 and Xbox in terms of sales. I really want Nintendo to strike gold with Revolution.. I hope they can do it.

But back on topic.

..Yeah, I suppose games that let you achieve gaming nirvana would qualify, but I was thinking more along the lines of just genuinely kind-spirited games that elevate your mood. But yeah, might as well broaden the thread.

If we're talking ultimate, absorbing games, the first that popped into my head just now is Super Metroid. The amount of detail in the game's world is mezermizing, and the depth and flexibility within the game itself allows for a huge amount of freedom. There is simply so much you can do to keep the game fresh with subsequent playthroughs.

Animal Crossing.. haha, yeah, I'd forgotten about that one, Melf. I really enjoyed it for the first couple of months, but after that I simply lost interest. If only there was more to do.. still, it was one incredibly uplifting experience.

There is an Animal Crossing release planned for DS, possibly for the end of the year. Wi-Fi support would aid the game considerably.. effortless town interaction, simultaneous play in the same town, awwwwwyeah.

I really had a fun time with Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the SNES. This was just such a fun game with a neat story and tons of mini games. Konami did it and it was so unlike the games of the time. Ahh...might have to pick up an SNES on ebay.

Oh, and Drixxel? I agree with you about the term "kiddie game". I used to work at a Babbages and I'd get so mad when someone would come in and ask what's good and I'd show them something like Rocket Knight or Ristar and they'd say they don't play kiddie games. Ugggh! I mean I could see if I showed them a Barney game.

I'd add Monster World IV to the list, I love that game and you can't help but get happy watching Asha running around.

Other honorable mentions are Elite Beat Agents (best DS game ever?), any of the Mario RPG games (including Paper Mario) and New Super Mario Wii.

Love that game! It's the music and top shooter/side scroller! It's got it all! And it's hard as hell!

Robotron 2084 or Star Fox 64 on my Dream Arcade machine. Star Fox, besides the odd button layout necessary for it to work, works perfectly on the Dream Arcade machine (much better than the N64, believe it or not).

EDIT: Or, I take my rage out on polar animals on "Arctic Gun," an arcade machine in my basement.

Sometimes I just like to sit back and play Phantasy Star IV and just laze out.

Yes! Entire worlds to explore, all kinds of quaint towns full of people to talk with, fantastic music. Let off steam by killing monsters and earning cash and exp. Uncover the epic history of the Algo solar system as you save it! God I love this game!

Sonic 1 gg

Yes. Wonderful game, great music, bright and cheery!

On the Dreamcast I used to play Wetrix, a kind of 3D "puzzle" game -- you have to constantly build and reinforce walls / mountains on a floating square board, as water falls onto it, and you have to keep the water from spilling off. Bright vivid colors, psychedelic backdrops and relaxing music!

Oh and for a simple upbeat game, how about PAPERBOY!!!
