Here's celebrating my first day free from the resource-hogging stench of Norton Internet Security. Hoy! :ok:
Too long have I been held back by its paranoid background processes and stifling hard-drive Gestapo-ism!

Congratulations! It is definitely a good idea to rid yourself of anything Norton.
Except for Ghost. Awesome backup tool.

The best thing is that I've replaced all of its functions with free antivirus software that, even all together, only takes up a fraction of the memory Norton did and is far less intrusive.

I am also bugged by Norton. But I don't know any option to it, so I haven't gotten rid of it. I must also say that that program has helped me a few times.

Welcome to the wonderful world of post-Norton. :D You will find that booting your computer a much more enjoyable experience now that you have got rid of that hateful program.

I have two firewalls and the free antiVir running, and the only time I had trouble was a year ago, in the first week I was online.

Zebbe, I use AVG Free, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and A-Squared Free. (There's also Rootkit Revealer and HiJack This!) All of them are totally free to download, update, and use. Work great, too. Check this document out:

While I sprung for Webroot (my dad has it on his laptop) I am quite happy to be rid of Norton as well.
It was fine up until a few years ago, but then 2005 or 2006 Norton started running like shit. Checking to make sure my programs are running and all that jazz. Just load up and let me run my shit on my own!
I'll never use Norton ever again.

I just put it in when I got RoadRunner. Maybe that's why it's become this hunk of shit. Damn it, will MicroCenter takes returns on used software like that?

Genesis Knight: Thanks a lot for your tips! I did a huge update of my computer today. I downloaded AVG Free and did a full scan. It found 11 viruses, of which 4 were unhealable and put into quarantine. I also got rid of Norton. It seems to be good so far, but what should I use to block annoying .jpgs that I load to see everyday I use The Internets?

I'd go with Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D (mainly the former). You shouldn't visit so many dodgy porn sites!!

I already have Ad-Aware, but how do I put image links into a quarantine so they won't be visible again?

I know, but I'm a nerd.
By the way: why the hell does AVG Free suggest a full harddrive scan EVERY DAY?? It takes hours and slows down the computer as much as Norton Internet Security (which did a virus scan once per month or so). It's not like I brawl the entire Internets of pr0n sites 24/7 so I can proudly show my doctor AVG Free how many viruses I got during my hunt. That would be like a sex tour in Africa.

If you remove it you will probably just get an [x] box popping instead. Just root around your computer for the image, when you find it then delete it.

There was this song called "Freedom". It's not a very good song, but it was a big hit in the US (and probably the UK). That's a lyric from it.

while I like AVG, it's bitching at me that Im using it too many times, as I host a home network with a domain controller, and the domain controller, my laptop, my livingroom computer, and my fathers computer all have AVG.. now everytime the computer boots up, it says AVG won't run because I violated the (um, free?) agreement..

Maybe you downloaded the wrong one? My version never gives me problems.

I use AVG and Trend Micro together.
So far so good.

Hey, I'd rather have Norton than Mcaffee. Mcaffee is evil to me...
Mr Smith

I'd rather have a virus than either Norton or Mcaffee. Both of them act like spyware, telling you every four second to upgrade, trying to scan every single superflous flie you open, neither uninstalls properley, they slow down the computer and are both utter tosh.
