I got my SMS in the mail... and it has a later revison. I think It has Hangon/Safari Hunt built in, and it has a date of 1988 which I've never seen before - I thought it was only 1986. And Joe, it does NOT need an amp for a bright signal - it's just as bright as running SMS games through a PBC game on my Genesis.. I wonder if it works well with the odd tectoy games.

I have the same model. I wanted a MS 2, but decided against it so I can play the godly Maze Hunter 3D.

there was some MasterSystem I remember using once, it had the Space Harrier theme, and just showed the SEGA logo and had a checkerboard floor.. (no walls or anything)...

sadly, that was when my autism was a little worse, so it might have been my imagination... (i hope not! i love that theme!)

That would be the Japanese Mark III BIOS screen, in all its FM unit-y goodness.

David: check the sticker on the bottom of the machine, it should tell you the model number. Bet it's 301A :D This means that it came as part of the 'Master System Plus' set which came boxed with two pads and a Light Phaser, meaning you could either play Hang-On or Safari Hunt right out of the box. I think Hang-On and Safari Hunt were also released as a combo cartridge, too.

There's a ton of different SMS revisions, the model number corresponds to the built-in game; 3010 is the Snail Maze BIOS (the very first SMS release?), 3001 is the SegaScope package that came with 2 3-D games packed in, and so on. 3006 is the Alex Kidd SMS2.

It's 3010-A.

I just don't have a light phaser - I think I could get one an hour away, but I'm not a big light phaser fan.

It was in the U.S. The original MS has the hidden snail game built-in, and included the combo cartridge as a pack-in.

The Sega Master System came with Hang-On/Safari Hunt combo cartridge + Light Phaser

The Sega Base System came with Hang-On/Astro Warrior combo cartridge and no light phaser.

I wanted a MS 2
Why would anyone ever want that disgusting eyesore? MS 1 iz da bomb.

Interesting. Mine is ever-so-slightly darker, but not as dark as N64 RGB. Of course I could just plug in my TurboGrafx-16 RGB cable since it doesn't have any resistors in it and I'd probably get a very bright signal.

SNAIL MAZE kicks ass.

Well, it could be my TV, or the console itself. I'll open it up and see what revision it is - I swore I saw a revision number or something.
