Metal Slug owned at the arcade. I love that game! Therefore, I'd like to find a clone or a similar game for the good old Genny, so I'm asking for some recommendations. Don't say Gunstar Heroes, because I already have it and I'll know you're lying. :D

You mean a run and gun? Definitely recommend contra. It has a different feel than the cartoony and funny metal slug, buts challenging and just as hectic.

Metal Slug has a feel and quality all its own.. I can't think of any Genesis run'n'guns that would qualify as Metal Slug clones, but there are a number of Contra-like products that might interest you besides Gunstar Heroes and of course Contra: Hard Corps.

Demolition Man: Nowhere near as tight as Metal Slug, but it's certainly got the action. Not a bad game at all, and a hell of a lot better than Stallone's other Genesis outing, that club-footed Judge Dredd-ful! Ahahahaha! Not funny in the least.
Dinosaurs For Hire: If not for the fact that you play as one of three gun toting dinosaurs, this would be one completely forgettable action game. Hell, it still is, but it's at least worth a go if you're really strapped for something to do.
Mega Turrican: Well now, Mega Turrican rocks. In fact, I even listed it on my top-ten Genesis picks. Long, interesting levels, various weapon choices, and constant gunfire. Not a twitch game, but super cool.
Midnight Resistance: Much like the original Contra, only slower and blander.

You might like danielsheil's recommendation of Doom Troopers, but I've never much cared for it myself. Then again, it's no worse a choice than Dinosaurs for Hire or Midnight Resistance. Global Gladiators is neat, but I don't forsee it satisfying your Metal Slug cravings as it doesn't strike me as being the same style of game. I definately say check out Mega Turrican (Demolition Man, too), but even then, if you're set on finding a Metal Slug duplicate, these won't do it for you.

I'd been thinking about M Turrican, so I'm glad to see another recommendation for it. Thanks for the titles!

I figured there wouldn't be anything exactly like it.

You haven't checked the Run-'N-Gun Fiesta (http://www.sega-16.com/Feature-%20Run-N-Gun%20Fiesta.htm)? Shame on you!

Well that about covers it all.

Melf, I'm assuming by the exclusion of ol' Mega Turrican that you consider it more of a platformer than a run and gun? I guess it sort of is, but gunfire plays a huge part.

EDIT: Good god... page two would have been helpful for me to check. Researched posts are fun!

I know about that feature, Melf, but I'm not looking for just another Run 'n Gun. I'm looking for a game that has the same gameplay feel as Metal Slug. Maybe I should have clarified.

I'm sure a Hong Kong pirate cart of Metal Slug exists for Genesis somewhere. Those crazy bootleggers will bootleg anything. Bootleg!

Yes, well...

So you stand by M Turrican as most like Metal Slug, then, considering the fact I'm thinking about gameplay?

Well..

No. There's a fair bit of platforming in Mega Turrican, and the levels are a lot more complex than in Metal Slug. Contra: Hard Corps is probably more like Metal Slug than any Genesis game, what with its unrelenting action, frenetic pace, constant exploding of things, and one-hit kills. Mega Turrican is a bit more forgiving in that you have a life bar and you are not at all times enveloped in deathdealing madness. Both great games, but Contra: Hard Corps may be more of what you're looking for. I wanted to mention Mega Turrican and those other run and guns to give you a bit more selection, but ultimately Contra fits the bill of a Metal Slug feelalike better than any other Genesis game that floats to mind.

EDIT: But by all means check out Mega Turrican. It might not be of the same exact style of game as Metal Slug, but it still has plenty of action.

I think the problem with games playing like Metal Slug is that it wasn't even released until the Genesis was in the end of it's lifecycle. Closest in feel would probably be Contra, or possibly Gunstar Heroes, though I haven't played that one for myself yet.

It will be hard to find a game on par with Metal Slug. I think it is in my top 5 games of all time. It just doesn't get any better than Metal Slug =)

I love In the hunt too! What is it about super detailed, colorful 2d graphics that make the best games ever?

The Metal Slug Series (I owned the entire english set on NEO GEO AES once, except for 1 and 2 which are conversions) is certainly my favorite platform run n gun ever.

And I for one feel it was Nasca's little satire on SNK's Iron Tank. There are many similarities.

MS on the Genesis would be awesome indeed though. Imagine the team that made the 1st gen games on the Genesis and how well they could have pulled it off. If Ghouls n Ghosts was done, so could have Metal Slug.

Do you like Irem's graphic style? Ever play Aicom's Pulstar for the NEO GEO? As you may know, Aicom actually consists of Irem developers; its why it is practically R-Type. I also read that Nazca (Metal Slug fame) was consisted of some Irem people too.

Yes, I love Irem. Pulstar is great! R-Type is of course great too =)

How many sequels were made for Metal Slug? I lost track.

Ehh, six I believe. Metal Slug 1-5 + Metal Slug X, and they're all winners.

There were also two NGPC games and one GBA game.

Well, the Sega CD version of the Terminator might fit the bill, but please avoid the Genesis version.

The Sega CD version has different levels, and has a GREAT soundtrack.

Hi All,

Not sure if I'm posting in the correct area. New to this. I had a question about a game called dinosaurs for hire. I was looking for both 1 & 2 player game genie codes but could only find 1 player game genie codes. I see there was 1 & 2 player megadrive type of game codes for infinite lives & health but don't see that for the USA version. Thanks for any help. Not all game genie website are created equal. I have found bits and pieces of game codes all over the place.

Best Regards,
Vader
