Is this because my battery is dying? I save a game, then half an hour later it disappears.

Yes, this is because your battery has run dry. Replace it and you'll be fine.

There are also mods you can do to replace the battery with a rechargable battery. Or simply you can use a memory device and store all your saves on that and transfer the save you need before you start the game and before you turn off your saturn. Replacing the battery is best. Some dollar stores carry them but I think they die faster but they are a 1/4th the price.

Help me please, I can`t create new threads, so excuse me if this is a bit offtopic. I just bought an used Saturn from France. My question about the battery-backed memory is : how many slots (or whatever it`s measurement unit is) does it normally have ? Mine has about 470 and i can barely hold data from Virtua Fighter 2 and a WarCraft 2 - The Dark Saga save. Thank you
