View Full Version : Captain America & the Avengers
Most super hero games turn out, well...less than good. Ah hell, let's be honest. Most of them just plain suck. With Captain America & the Avengers, Data East took a campy, corny arcade game and brought it home pretty faithfully to the Genesis. Still, a good port of a bad game is still a bad game. To see how bad it can get, read our full review (http://www.sega-16.com/2005/08/captain-america-the-avengers/).
Yeah, I definately have to disagree. This game deserves about a 5. Its campy, its cheesy, but its actually kinda fun once you have the controls down. Not very memorable, but its a generic beat'em up. Deserves a score of Fair, not Bad...
With as rare as expensive as it is, I doubt many ppl have a copy. DP price on this one's about 20.
Ebay probably much less though, judging from how badly it was massacred in reviews lol.

Good god, $20 complete? The SNES version goes for dirt cheap.
I think that 2 is a little extreme, but this is definately not a good game. I used to play this all time because I'd frequently be reminded of how fun Spider Man The Arcade Game was, and this seemed an appropriate choice to ease that craving, even though it never helped the situation and the game was the same crap every time. Eventually I wisened up and haven't played it since, but tonight I'm intrigued and will likely fire it up again, only moments later to be hit with that familiar wave of disappointment. I can't even dictate why this game irritates me so much, it's just this total package of mediocrity that's somehow indescribable.
I always chose Iron Man.. for some reason he's always stuck me as being so amazingly cool.
I also disagree with the rating. This game is a 5 or 6. The game wouldn't be the same without the cheesy voices.

The game is maybe a 5 or a 6 for comedic reasons. As a beat-'em up (and a scrolling shooter!), though, it is a total failure. It's just so plain and frustrating even when compared to the first Streets of Rage (which I would give a 6). To me, a 2 reflects how senseless and pointless this game is, whereas a 5 would be saying "hey, this is okay but dull!"

I also disagree with the rating. I would give it a solid 6. Its a simple, cheesy beat 'em up that is pretty darn faithful to the arcade game. It is also a BILLION times better than the SNES version.
Not saying it could compete with the Streets of Rage series or anything but its not THAT bad.

I'm curious, raystorm, what makes the Genesis version so much better than the SNES?
It has all the voices, for one thing. It's also pretty darn close to the arcade in terms of levels and such. The graphics took a hit, but most everything else from the arcade original is there.
I think that's the problem with CA&tA. The Genesis game is a good port, and all its problems (save the graphics) were present in the coin-op. All the campiness and cheese was already there.

Interesting. I've only played the SNES port, and it controls like an utter donkey. Quite an uncomfortable gaming experience, really.

Assembled here for the good of the world (well, the USA anyway) are Captain America, Iron Man, Bullseye and Vision
The most minor of corrections, the dude's actually named Hawkeye.
EDIT: ..and that little exchange of dialogue between Whirlwind and ol' Captain America at the end of the review should be the other way around. Arg.. who cares. It was an amusing review.

Actually, there isn't only a Captain America movie in production, but also an Iron Man movie!
Now all we need is a Vision mini-series, so we can find out why the hell we should care he exists.
Still though, the review was kinda funny, especially with the dialouge already being present. You forgot about the Laser Cannon conspiricy.
The entire plot of this game is about Red Bull(Skull, excuse me) having a lazer cannon on the moon. The Avengers find this lazer, which for some reason isn't shooting anything. Then, as you fall down into the space station, you kick the lazer 5 times. Then it explodes.
The game should be over right there.
But yeah, I still liked the game. Enough to buy it for almost $40 used!

Holy hell, you're right. How'd I miss that, being the big Avengers fan that I am?
Fixed!

Just thought of something else. Wasn't the water level the 4th level? You seem to mix both the second level and the 4th level together?

I think I separated the two horizontal stages well enough (indicating that the submariner introduces an underwater stage and that the other involves flying past spaceships, etc.). I did have some problems wording the review to keep it unbloated and clear with all the quotes, though.

I like the voices. That's one of the things that got my attention to play it in the arcades.

I used to love the arcade version so I really liked this game. I used to get so excited when an arcade game was getting ported to the Genesis! That may be why I enjoyed it more than I should have. I know I probably wouldn't get much out of it today but I sure did back in '93. And the voice acting adds a certain charm to it in a Resident Evil sort of way. Great review but I'd score it higher than 2...maybe a 6.

I enjoyed this game A LOT. It was fun and I loved the driving levels too. I give it a 7

A 2 is a bit extreme.
But I wouldn't give it anything higher than a 4.
I enjoyed it for it's simplicity, and comedic value.
You should have screen captured a villian encounter. . .which is where CA and his possie stand sideways and extend their finger.
the only line I remember was from stage 2.
"THANKyou.........WON-der....MAN........!!"
Comedic gold is one thing, but it's another thing entirely if you loose interest after you're done laughing.

One rather large hyphenated word. Post-Knockdown-invincibility.
You know how in most beat'em-ups, you get temporary invincibility after you get hit and/or knocked down? Well, in the SNES version, *the enemies* get that as well. So imagine if you will, you come across a swarm of enemies, knock them down one by one; they get up, and suddenly you're surrounded by a group of *invincible* enemies.

Wasn't this port handled by some 3rd party developer related to Data East proper, who also ported over "Midnight Resistance" and other games (non-Data East as well) to the Genesis??? MR and Captain America both run at the same framerate and share many similar sound effects.
Anyways, it was a mediocre port of an arcade game that was a decent novelty at best. Impressive number of voices for a 4th gen title as well.

The graphics look so Master System-like.

The port was done by Opera House (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Miki_%26_Fujiwara_Production/Opera_House) (not related to Data East). MR and Captain America share the same sound effects because Hitoshi Sakimoto worked on both.

the one thing that make the genesis version better then the super nes version is the game on the super nes is so slow to the point that its unplayable
I dunno, it's so cheesy I like it!

True, if it was all crap then it wouldn't have divided opinion so much, I'm just after picking up a copy very recently and I'm a major fan of the seriously old feel to this game, they stopped making games that felt like this in the 90s, pure gold.

hahah, that is just crazy, cause i freaking LOVE the avengers game. I play it a lot. I really like the arcade as well, i think the genesis version does it pretty well. I have played both pretty extensively and get a lot of fun out of the home version. On the other hand, i think that the SNES version was actually the crappy one. vision was MAD broken in that game. I think that as far as silly beat'em ups go, avengers does good job as a port of a decent arcade game.

To me it was just a mediocre but not horrible beat-'em-all that I kinda liked at the time just cause it was another beat-'em-all. A 6 would sound fair. I liked The Punisher better though, as far as 16-bit era Marvel-licensed games go. I mean, the guns were pretty cool. Captain America has all the classic lines, though.

I just picked up a complete copy of this game for $7.99 from a used game store today. I knew that I shouldn't expect much from it and it wasn't all that great at all just a fun blast of nostalgia and memories of actual arcade game. The controls suck and the graphics would work on the Sega Master System but it's fun for at least a little while but it does get old fast. I also don't like the fact that when you fire your weapons you can't move until your weapon is done. That coupled with poor collision detection really makes for an unfair and hard game.
I give it a 5/10 for a mediocre though semi enjoyable experience.

I wish the running attack was actually a good animation. For example it would have been nice to have Captain America plow through enemies with his shield instead he does some lame ass animation I can't even explain "almost a pose" yet it kills enemies lol.
I still like the game, I just hate when there are easy improvements that can make a game a lot more enjoyable left out.

I like Captain America & the Avengers Sega Genesis cartridge. The game is not perfect; however, it plays well. I have owned this cartridge for years. Too bad that I do not have the case/instructions for it since I bought at Funcoland as cart only.

I think that Captain America & the Avengers for Sega Genesis is worth trying.
If you have a Sega Saturn and like Iron Man, Iron Man / X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal by Acclaim is a really good game.

The original game isn't that good at all. But the voices are so bad that they make it worth playing.

The voice acting in this is classic, but yeah the gameplay is pretty awful. It's pretty disappointing as it's one of those games that I wanted to be awesome when it came out but there was no denying it was not.

I can't believe anyone, anywhere, ever gave this anything less than a 5 out of 10. A two is just simply mind-numbingly idiotic. It's not just a matter of taste, either, though I admit to being a HUGE beat-em-up fan. It's not the best game ever or any such, but an easy 7 or 8 out of 10 as a brawler.
I get the impression from the review that he's one of those RPG or platform guys who compares everything to his favorite games, regardless of genre. *shrug* I mean, Skies of Arcadia is a TERRIBLE fighting / action game, but that doesn't mean it deserves a 2 out of 10...
