I was thinking about getting this game, i have some posters that hype it, and I remember it being hyped when I was a kid.

is it any good?

I've heard nothing but praise about it. It supposedly handles the comic translation pretty well, and isn't highly innovative, but really fun. I'm in the market for a copy myself.

Bought the SNES version back when it was initially released in 1994, and thought it was pretty good. I did tire of it after a short while, though, but it's still an interesting (and tough) beat-em-up.

Well I don't have any beat 'em ups. Hmm this may be a good choice to add that genre to my small collection.

The Hype was waaaaaaay overdone, and the game suffered for it critically. The graphics are mediocre, levels repetitive, and too tough for its own good. The lack of a 2-player mode especially hurts.

To it's credit, there are some nifty gameplay features stemming from Spidey's web abilities and wall crawling. Also, the control is pretty tight and pulling off moves is easy.

Green Jelly does the soundtrack, but it is completely non-memorable.

There is a sequel called Separation Anxiety which is pretty much the same exact game...

Worth $5-$8, and nowhere near the level of SoR or TMNT.

The game is very, very repetive. Even for a beat em up.

In my humble opinion, it stinks. I would recommend the Streets of Rage titles instead, and I'm sure the others will back me up on this.

I like the game, but as has already been said, the lack of a 2-player mode is really a detractor. I rented the SNES version back when the game was originally released and wasn't impressed at all, but a month or so ago found a complete Genesis copy for $5 (Canadian, might I add) and to my surprise I enjoyed the game significantly more than I had ten years ago. If you try playing the game with a standard 3-button controller, it'll be significantly more difficult to use the various web maneuvers available to Spider-Man and Venom which include dragging enemies towards you and swinging, so a six-buttoner is recommended. The control is quite responsive, so you shouldn't have any problems pulling off the standard double-tap running and jump attacks.

My opinion is that it's a solid enough beat-em-up, and worth picking up if it's available nearby and cheap. If only it was two-player..

I know some people who love it, but its... really bad.

I enjoyed Shaq-Fu more than it, and thats SAD!

Ouch. That *is* sad. But then again, I can get Shaq-Fu for $1, whereas I'd have to cough up $8 for Carnage. Considering both are crap, at least I could have the same amount of laughs for $7 less. =)

"You can't polish a turd." :P

I'd go for MC, although I'd buy Shaq-Fu too, just to smash it against a brick wall and hear how it sounds.

I think I'd rather EAT Shaq-Fu than simply destroy it. That way, it would truly achieve the caliber of turd it could never accomplish on its own.

But bejeezus, Maximum Carnage isn't that bad.. it's not an agonizing game to play, unless you count the frequent cheap hits from boss fights with Doppleganger. How hard would it have been to work in a two-player mode? They already have two playable characters! Such a stupid oversight..

Isn't there a guy who's eaten bikes and computers?

I guess it isn't too outrageous.

I love it. Great set of moves, fun gameplay, faithful plot, nice challenge. The only thing I don't like about it is the fights with Doppleganger/Shriek.

By the time 1994 came around, I had already played about a zillion beat 'em ups. The steep challenge and having Spider-Man's abilities set it apart. I didn't mind not having a two-player mode, because the stage design and enemy placement aren't conducive to two players, and the plot would be completely messed up by having both Spider-Man and Venom at all times.

Separation Anxiety isn't as good, btw.

As Genesis beat-em-ups go, frankly I prefer to play Maximum Carnage over TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist. If I wanted to play a dumbed-down Turtles in Time, I... well, I just wouldn't.

Maximum Carnage is good. I liked it. It is tough but you just got to know how to maneuver around so that they won't hit you. It is better than separation anxiety. I was let down by separation it had no comic scenes, no story.

Maximum Carnage is ok,though I like the snes version better. I agree with the people who said to play Streets of Rage instead. Much better games right there. Though if you like spiderman, maximum carnage might be worth checking out.

I absolutely loooove Maximum Carnage... although I'm probably a little biased since it was my first Genny game ;)

What zany ways could you mess with the game, daminmancejin2? Haha, any chance for a two-player mode?

I think they would have been bettter off porting the original arcade game to Genesis, instead of hacking up Turtles in Time and leaving out some of the best parts (including the ability to throw enemies at the screen, thanks to the lack of scaling in Genny).

Maximum Carnage was an okay game, though the thugs you fought were laughably stupid looking. The Maximum Carnage story sucks worse than the game itself. The 90's were not kind to Spidey in his native format.

The best part of Hyperstone Heist was the double-tap run. Holding a direction and then suddenly running after a while kind of confused me in Turtles in Time.

If it has double-tap then it is worth a purchase to me. That's one of the big issues for any beat 'em up in my opinion.

Nevermind, it has a run button, rather than a double-tap. Still better.

I don't get why everybody's all hot and bothered over throwing enemies into the screen. Seems a rather silly gimmick to me.

Turtles in Time had a double tap run.

Drixxel

Turtles in Time had a double tap run.

Indeed. You are given the choice between a double tap run and a hold direction run in the options menu, but it's set on hold by default as I recall.

..And yes, a port of TMNT: The Arcade Game would have been righteous. Beyond pure laziness, the motivation behind Hyperstone Heist's creation is a mystery to me..

Maybe because Konami wanted the SNES and Genesis versions to be different, like TMNT:Tournament Fighters, both the SNES and Genesi versions had different versions and characters

Melf

Konami made their versions of Sparkster different, so it wouldn't surprise me if the same happened with TMNT. Actually, things worked out better when they did this. Direct ports were a mixed bag (Tournament Fighters, ZAMN), and having a unique version for each console is pretty cool.
