View Full Version : Genesis Virtual Console: Month 4
A bunch of new Genesis games have found their way to the Wii Store, and we've gone through them to see which is worth your $8 and which aren't. There's a particularly large group of releases this time around, so check out our full article (http://www.sega-16.com/2007/06/genesis-virtual-console-vol-04/) to find out what your best bets are!

Wonder Boy in Monster World getting a pass must just be for the Classic Controller necessity, really never tell any one to pass that game up. That's probably my only disappointment with any of these articles.

Wonder Boy in Monster World kicks ass.
Though I'd http://www.sega-16.com/Features/Genesis%20Virtual%20Console/Pass.gif on them all and get the real games for cheaper instead!

Yeah, Wonderboy and Panic on Funkatron are terrific games that are well worth playing. Wonderboy is easily one of the best of its kind, and Panic on Funkatron is a rather brilliant and unique platformer which always gets a bad rap for not being a rehash. That's a great Genesis line-up, though, as always, with no new additions over the originals, it doesn't make much sense to purchase a Wii download when you can usually own the original for about the same price.

Panic on Funkatron was the hardest for me to judge. The game really is solid, and looks fantastic. It's just not like the original. As for Wonder Boy in Monster World, not only could you find it waaaaaay cheaper for the actual system, but I also don't see casual gamers getting into it, which is supposedly the Wii's audience.
I'd buy MBiMW if I didn't already own it. It's a fantastic action/RPG.

How can you say VF 2 was graphically impressive? It looked like a joke. Okay, the floor is 3D, but the characters are small, not animated very good and the backgrounds are damn boring.
Even Fatal Fury 1 looks better. While SNES-owners were granted with the really great-looking Killer Instinct, Sega-fans got slapped in the face with this poor port that looks like a 1991 game at best and misses two characters or interesting gameplay modes.

I've never seen "Killer Instinct" and "great-looking" used in the same sentence before... even when discussing the arcade!

Then you must live in a tiny world of your own only talking with little Joe-clones.:D

That sounds like an awesome world, but only if the clones are also slaves.

Nah, not my kind of world. I mean slaves, okay, but no little Joe Redifers; I prefer naked blond girls with perfect bodies for my world.

I wouldn't buy Sonic 2 on the Wii if I had one and didn't own the cart. There are 6 millions of those and if you can't get one cheaper than 800 Wii money you suck.
It is always nice to read this column even if I don't have a Wii and never will get one.

Holy crap... I own all of those games, expect the ToeJam and Earl game, and I have got them for all less than $8
Some of them are incomplete, but I have never cared much about them being complete. But I own the real carts, which is enough for me.
If you want Sonic 2 that badly, I'm sure you could find Sonic Mega Collection used for the Gamecube for a lot less than $8, seeing the Wii plays Gamecube games. I did pay $20 for the Xbox version, but I sorta had a good reason for it.

It's difficult to say "Pass" or "Purchase" on a lot of these games. Yes, you can go ANYWHERE and buy Sonic 2 for $2 or less, but that doesn't take away from the greatness of the game. I think everything will be a little easier come "Shining Force" time. Until then, I can recommend certain favorites (Sonic Spinball?!?), but to us loyal Genny fans, it's all a matter of personal opinion.

I have a Wii and I really think the VC games are overpriced. The only values, I think , are the TG-16 games since those games usually go for a bit more than SNES or Genesis games from what I understand.
I downloaded one Genny game (Gunstar Heroes) and enjoyed it immensely, but rather than make me want to spend $8 on another Genesis game, I just decided to get the real console instead. I wonder how many other people will do the same.

Certain games, like Gunstar Heroes and Toe Jam & Earl, consistently sell for over $8 via the internet, retro shops, etc... So buying THOSE games on the Wii makes perfect sense. Something tells me we're going to see more valuable titles in the coming weeks (Shining Force being a SHINING example - nice play on words :p ). Otherwise, games like Sonic 2 can be considered downright expensive if you already own a Genesis.

How can you say pass to Alex Kidd in Enchanted Castle? I mean, that's one of my personal favourite MegaDrive games, it's got good gameplay and it's a generally fun game. Pffffffft.

I definitely would've put pass on Sonic 2. Yeah it's great, but you can probably get Sonic Mega Collection used at Gamestop for less. Value should be taken into account as well as game quality, IMO.
Passing on Panic on Funkotron is heresy.

"It's not bad, but it isn't the original either."
True, it's the sequel.. and it's better (more fun) than the original. I wouldn't describe it as traditional, quirky or perhaps funky is a better word there.. ^^
I agree about WBiMW, it's not a must-have even if you're into the genre. Still it's much better than Zelda 2 which is the only alternative atm (I think).

I think Toejam & Earl is a definite purchase for me anyway, eventhough you said it goes away from the original I think this is a good thing, its awesome and diverse, I wouldn't lump it in with all the other platformers.
