View Full Version : 1st Genesis model has the best audio?

Everyone says the 1st model of the Genesis has the best audio...I used to think this as well until I came across a model 3. This model 3 has the cleanest audio I've heard from any Genesis (model 1 or 2.) Here are some recordings...keep in mind these are mono since I haven't modded the system for stereo. Are there any model 3s which support stereo natively?

All model 3s support stereo natively. You just need the cable. The AV out is EXACTLY the same as the model 2.

Anyway some later model 1s had worse audio than the first ones. Some model 2s have good audio, some have bad audio. There really isn't any consistency. The audio clips you posted don't sound horribly different than the model 1 from what I can hear.

I took your file and one I recorded from my model 1 launch day Genesis and melded them together. I turned my file into mono in fairness. Check out this MP3:

Can you tell which is which? Can you tell where one model transitions into the other? If not, I'll let you know the precise time the file changes and to what model.

In the Thunder Force IV song I think the guitars are higher and cleaner, but the drums are lower.

Yeah, I think the model 3 lacks a bit of bass and midrange, though the highs are like maybe 1 or 2% cleaner. I'll take the bass and midrange.

And since nobody wants to guess (or can't), here is the description of my MP3 in my previous post:

0:00 - Model 3

0:05.5 - Model 1

0:11 - Model 1

0:22 - Model 3

Sorry Joe, didn't get home until now. I was going to post which samples were which, but you beat me to it. I had the models pegged right though. I guess I'll have to do recordings from the model 3 now, since it's much cleaner than my model 2. Now if I can figure out how to get stereo from the model 3 - I have it connected using a stereo a/v cable, but it only outputs mono.

I am hearing sound from both the left and right channels in your model 3 recordings. For some reason it is getting summed to mono. You sure everything is hooked up properly?

If I remember correctly, some model 3's only had mono audio, while some had stereo audio. (different motherboard revisions)...

I think you're right Evildragon. I have one of the earlier model 3s (it has the same ASIC as my model 2.) Joe, I just copied the audio in the left channel to the right channel so it would come out of both speakers.

Then they must be summed internally.

yea, at the op-amps i believe.... so a stereo mod is available. i remember seeing one..

If you come across the mod, let me know. Here's a pic of my motherboard if it helps.

hmm, on the left, i see a weird cheap route in manufacturing.. there's a spot with a diode marker, but they simply used a jumper wire.. jeez, a diode is used for a reason, to prevent electricity from flowing in BOTH directions.. a jumper wire defeats that.. unless of course, the diode was a mistake..

hmm, the mod is for a VA2, but you seem to have a VA1, that should be stereo..

Hmm...I see what you mean, I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. Thanks for the link - I've come across it before and that model 3 uses a newer ASIC, unfortunately. At least I can do the S-video mod on the model 3 since it uses the same chroma encoder (CXA1645) as my model 2.

Evildragon, I was looking at my model 3 again and noticed there is a diode at the place you were talking about. The pic I took makes it look like a short, but it's not. Here's a pic of my model 2 mainboard just for comparison.

You do know of places like Photobucket.com and whatnot, right? That rapidshare nonsense is extremely annoying.

Nope, but I'll check it out and use it...as long as it's free.

tindeck.com is ideal for hosting MP3s.

You could also try FileDen (http://www.fileden.com/), which I generally use.

Joe, do you have Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine? If you do, can you post the music from exercise mode?

Same here, but I don't want to pay $50+ for it. I've seen some auctions on eBay though for only $30 or so (after they ended)...maybe we'll luck out. I might have to break down and get it anyway since the music is so good.
