I wrote a guide for Beyond Oasis that is on several sites and gets a lot of hits, etcetera, and although I've gotten a lot of email about it I'd never gotten one from anyone playing it on the Wii's Virtual Console. Until today.

Now, remember all those jokes about people raving over "XGranndaX" and stuff? Wasn't too far off base. Here is the subject line, untampered with and 100% as it appeared in my mailbox.

I played through it once and I don't think I'll ever want to play through it again. Not sure why B is the confirm button when it should be the cancel button like it is in 99% of other videogames. I hear Legend of Oasis on the Saturn is the same exact thing, only the mazes have been changed around and the graphics are better. Music is still worse than being anally-raped with a sword, though.

IMO, Beyond Oasis is the best Action RPG of the era simply because of the seamless, gorgeous world and the fun fighting engine. Legend didn't catch my attention nearly as much for some reason, but I'm still glad to own it. I've never understood the gripes about the music. Were you expecting techno because it's by Koshiro? It's basically cart-quality orchestral music, so - aside from technical complaints - what's the problem? Did you dislike Final Fantasy music back in the cartridge days? Did you want the game to have rock or jazz?

It seems to me that Oasis has the only type of music that could possibly have fit.

Beyond Oasis' music often sounds like he's randomly hitting keys with no rhyme or reason. It's really bad. It's not the sound quality that kills it (though it helps), it's the composition, or lack thereof. Seriously, I could probably compose similar sound music by pressing my ass cheeks against a keyboard. If it were on the SNES or CD with better quality, it would still be crap. Legend of Oasis sounded bad, and that wasn't limited by cartridge means. I loved ActRaiser's music, and ActRaiser 2's music was close to Beyond Oasis' in the "lack-of-quality" department.

Streets of Rage 3 has similar problems. It's techno, but Yuzo really botched it. Sometimes I thought my Genesis was broken due to the lack of structure and keys being played randomly. Yuzo had to have been on crack during that period since ALL of his soundtracks on ALL of the systems he worked on at that time were horrible.

I got both Oasis games cheap, and I couldn't be happier, if I paid more than $20 for 'em, i'd be pissed.

I got 'em each for $2.99 a piece. Legend was complete, but beyond was not, and came it in a funny homemade cover, but the cart was like new.
