Discuss the awesomness that is the Shining Force sereis, any of them that you want. Ask about prices, technical details, anything about the games. Give your opinions, your favorites your least favorites, just whatever you want to talk about as concerns the Shining Force franchise.

I'm curious, which of the series is generally seen as the best, or at the very least in your opinion Demonic Weasel?

Does this Include Shining in the Darkness? I think this is the game that pretty much started the whole thing off even though it's nothing like the other Shining games.

Okay, yes this includes Shining in the Darkness which is what started the series and later Camelot put a couple things in for plot connections. As for which is the best... well Shining Force 3 is usually hailed as the best for the standard reasons of it having a better plot, fleshed out characters, etc. I'm not sure which I'd hail as the best, but out of the ones I've played it's probably going to be Shining the Holy Ark, or Shining Force the Legacy of Great Intention. At the moment I can't comment about Shining Force CD, and I haven't played any of the newer games, so it'd be one of those two.

I finally played it the other day, and man was I disappointed. Didn't live up to the hype at all.

Shining Force CD is the 2 GG Shining Force games remade into one 16 bit game. As such it's main focus is battle, battle, battle. If you expect as much it's a good game, but if you're expecting an immense story you'll be disappointed.

Vicman, which one did you play... and why do you say that it doesn't live up to it's praise?
By the by, one of the reasons that I liked Shining in the Darkness was because it was so hard. I like games that are challenging more than ones that aren't typically.

I really like Shining Force CD. Too bad the third Game Gear game was released after Shining Force CD.

Well I haven't played that particular one... sorry in my last post I meant to ask Genesis Knight why he says that Shining Force is so terrible and which one he played...

I was under the impression GK was talking about Shining Force CD...
Very timely thread! We'll have a review of Shining in the Darkness up on Monday.

Ah that's excellent. I noticed that there was only Shining Force 2 with a review. I've been meaning to see if I could get my lazy self to write a couple of Shining Reviews, but now Shining in the Darkness isn't necessary. excellent.
What gave you the impression he was talking about SFCD? Speaking of which, I've always wondered why that one seems to be the one people most frequently have a bad reaction to. Any ideas why?

My favorite Shining game is Shining the Holy Ark.

You said:

Followed immediately by GK saying:

I guess you can construe him speaking about Shining Force 1, as the topic is titled "Shining Force", but if this was a normal live conversation I would normally, and did, conclude/presume that he was talking about SFCD since it was the last thing you mentioned and his comments followed immediatedly afterwards with no indication as to what game in the series he was talking about.

I preemptively answered this such question before with:

Ah, I'd probably agree with you. Shining the Holy Ark is probably the one I'd pick as my favorite anyway. Vic, thanks that was mainly just a case of majorly not reading the replies very carefully. Personally I've never understood what's so disappointing abount SFCD having only battles in it myself. That's the main drive of any Shining Force game, and it's got the same amount of story as the gensis ones, even as much as Shining Wisdom...

I was talking about SF I and II. Sorry for the ambiguity.

'Tis all right... but what didn't you like about them?
Genesis Knight

Well, it wasn't a bad game, it just didn't meet the hype. It seemed practically tile-based, and the graphics were really childish. I didn't play long since I was using an emulator, but it was enough to see that it isn't worth US $50. >.>

Ah well I can understand that. Then again I never really pay much attention to graphics at all and just play the game as it is.

So anyone here play the entire series?
Vicman
08-29-2005, 07:36 PM
Tile based? Dude, it was the origin of Tactical RPG's. Have you played any other S/T-RPG's? Almost all are "tile" based. And the graphics being childish? Hello! This was a 16-bit RPG! The super deformed look was the norm back then. I mean if you're gonna not like the game, don't like it for good reasons, not weak stuff like that.
It seems to me you tried them out a bit on an emu and made some rather quick judgements w/o giving the game a serious look. Which it DESERVES. The praise it gets isn't hype. Talk about not appreciating or understanding a game in it's own time and place.

I've already said that I used an emulator, and I also said that I only gave it a quick look because I never keep ROMs for more than a few minutes.
That said, I saw enough to be less-than-impressed, given the hype surrounding the title. People praise this thing nonstop, so I guess I was expecting something a bit different.

What did you expect? If you would have done some research you would have known that it was a tactical/strategy RPG and that the graphics were typical of RPG's of the day, aka super-deformed. Since that's all you've given as to why the game is dissappointing then this initial impression seems rather ill-formed and premature. Play 'em a little longer, say a couple of hours, and I'm sure your opinion will change.
However I really didn't expect such a shallow assesment from you since you're the one who wrote about appreciating the Genny so much and experiencing the system as it was intended. If that is/was the case then your view on SF series really comes out of left field. In essence you're prematurely judging it by modern gaming standards, and thus not appreciating the game as it was intended.

Genesis Knight, maybe you'll pick up the game a few years from now and be blown away. Strategy RPGs take time to fully appreciate.

I have enjoyed a lot of the Shining series games... I've played quite a few of them:
Shining Force 1, 2, 3, CD
Shining in the Darkness
Shining the holy Ark
But I seem only capable of completing the Strategy games... Shining Force that is. I have beaten 1,2 and the first book in CD. Now I meant to beat 3 but the game I have is messed up not to far into the game (during the battle when you have to sneak out of the train town that you tried to sneak onto the train of... it rather ticked me strait off as the game bugs up when I go and hit the head officer of the bad guys. The one who stands all the way in the back of the field and does NOTHING). Yeah so I survived that entire battle just to have the game freeze EVERY time.

I can agree with you Drixxel. At first when I played shining force I thought it was kind of boring as time went on and the story progressed it got better. I got really into it.

Yeah, when I first played I was just like... this is interesting. Then I stuck with it, started playing the first battle and decided that I loved it. After doing some research I discovered all of the goodness that was actually the series and now I've played through almost every one and beaten them two. I'm currently working through part 2 of SF3 and the only other ones I haven't played are SFCD and SF3 PD.
I also haven't played any of the ones since Shining Soul, but I consider that a serperate series really, not part of the original.
So yeah, I really want to pick up SFCD and some other Sega CD games along with a Sega CD, but unfortunately I'm a little broke.
