View Full Version : Beggar Prince: Official Thread
We had a great discussion about this wonderful new Genesis RPG over at the old board, and it must continue!
For those not in the know, Beggar Prince is a brand new RPG for the domestic Genesis. It was originally released in Taiwan, but the folks over at Super Fighter have localized it with the aid of the original publisher. It'll sport a true cart with label, as well as a manual and clamshell case-all for a cool $40. Oldergames.com will handle the publishing this time around.
I can't wait for this new release!
http://dfg.the-underdogs.org/bp/bprince7.png
More pics can be seen at the game's website (http://www.beggarprince.com/)
Hmm graphics as good as chrono trigger... Yum.
I'm hoping that it sells well so we can see more releases. Now that these guys have done a game, they've done the hard part, I would think. All the tools are done, all they have to work on for future releases would be the actual translations themselves, no?
I wonder if there were any non-rpg's that could be licensed and released. The one thing I hated about the Playstation generation is the death of the 2d platformer.
<sigh>
I miss sidescrollers so... They should have kept them around until now at least, so we could have 640x480 goodness like Guilty Gear X.
Could you imagine a Ristar or Rocket Knight Adventure like that?
I have a 32x dev kit, and a sega genesis dev kit. The problem is that I'm NOT an experienced programmer. Intermediate student at best. And I can't draw if my life depended on it.
If the community was bigger we'd have a greater chance of finding talent. So we must unite the Genny Addicts all over!!! =)
Besides if this is a success we have a publisher =)

Does anyone have any idea as to how the game plays? Those screenshots don't reveal much about the battle system, but I would assume it's your standard turn-based combat. I'm curious to know how deep the character customization goes.. magic spells simply appearing as your character levels up, having to purchase magic as you would equipment, etc. etc.?

I think everyone is asking that question. You could download the original Taiwanese ROM and find out, you know.
I haven't gotten around to doing that and I should. I want to see if there are cut scenes and such.
*Goes to find a download.

I realized that I already had downloaded the Taiwanese original about a month ago and had never played it (the game was incorrectly titled Breath of Fire 3). I haven't yet figured out how to get out of the first town, seeing as it probably involves fetching a random item from one townsfolk to give to another townsfolk who then opens up a way for you. I spoke to everyone in town hoping something would happen, but.. nope. Saving, at least I think that's what I'm assuming is the desired action by selecting the open book in your menu, triggers a quaint little screen of a crescent moon in the night sky with a castle fading in below it. The problem is, I can't figure out how to get out of this screen.. it just keeps repeating. You can even open up your menu during this, with only the open book being selectable, and that just starts the cinema over again.
The English translation will definately work wonders.
Anyways... here are a few more complimentary screen captures that reveal nothing of the gameplay.

The Superfighter screens look better...did they amp up the graphics?
These have those nasty black outlines around the sprites...
It was probably the way he took the shots, no biggie.
I haven't heard exactly when this will be released. I assume it has to be sometime this month or the next, no?

I took those screenshots with Kega Fusion.. it's probably just the default graphic smoothing from the emulator that's making them look a bit wonky, that and the image resizing. I'll take some more once I figure out how to make my escape from the town.
As for the release, as far as I know it's still uncomfirmed, but I wouldn't image it being any later than mid August. That's a complete guess, though.

Well, I've made some degree of progress with the game. After wandering about town talking to everyone and collecting various items, I finally did something worthwhile - picked a good ol' fight.
The battle system is deeper than I had assumed from the original screenshots. Instead of being a standard turn-based system, both you and the enemy have the option to perform several actions per turn before command switches over. Each action drains a portion of a meter (the red bar near the bottom right), and when the bar is empty, it becomes the enemies' turn and the same method is applied to the them. The entire enemy team shares a single bar (the green bar, upper right) rather than each individual foe having their own. The bars completely refill when turns switch over. These screenshots were taken in Gens, so there shouldn't be any zany blurring or other graphical odditites that may have been present in the last batch.
Anyways.. there'll be more as it happens. It seems like a fairly fun RPG, and looks to be worth the purchase on the grounds of being a good game rather than simply being a new game.

Yeah, this game is really dense with the chinese characters... I do know the meaning of a few of them, but I really doubt that's gonna help.
Okay, so I downloaded the rom, here's my impressions.
-Character sprites are small, but have fun and quirky animations(at least the main character does.)
-The character actually has stuff to say when talking to people, not that common in my limited experience with rpgs.
-The walking speed is really fast. Fast enough that I'm wondering why there isn't a walk button.
-Battle and item menus have graphical representations. In battle the slingshot is for normal attacks, cane for magic attacks. Summoned me a big meteor type thing.
-Music seems like the typical rpg fare, but nice none the less.
-Can't figure out how to get out of town either. Think I figured out how to save though. In a house there is a beam of light and once you enter the book with the feather icon is accessible, assume this saves the game.
That's about all I can say so far, which isn't very far to begin with. I'd say though that the game appears to be something promising as everything so far looks to be quality. Hopefully the story is as charming as the graphical presentation.
EDIT: Okay, figured out how to get out of town. Gave the lone guard at the east gate this gray stone looking thing. This was after showing him the book, which I'm not sure was necessary or not.
Battles are random encounters. As far as I can tell, the system works like this: The pink bar represents your ability to attack. Normal attacks take off little chunks, magic takes off bigger chunks. So basically you can attack multiple times per turn. Then the green bar represents when you are vulnerable. Each attack against you, whether it hits or not takes off a little chunk. You are vulnerable until it is depleted. Which unfortunately means that if there is only one enemy it can still attack you multiple times.
For the magic attacks you choose the cane and then another menu pops up. The first available option is what allows you to select the meteor summoning spell. Also available to use at the start is a spiral icon which has a spell that appears to confuse enemies. Then there's the green star icon that has a healing spell. After leveling up you get a new spell under the green star icon which appears to make it difficult(impossible?) for enemies to hit you while still active.
Outside of the battles, which occured mostly in the cave I entered from the overworld map. There were buttons to stand on to deactivate walls blocking the path. Nothing too spectactular, typical stuff for an rpg. Seems like a good game so far. :)
Moved the thread to News Feed.
How did you take those shots? I couldn't find the screen shot option with Fusion (control + F12 did nothing). What did you do? Tell me!! :D
Drixxel

Screenshootin' with Kega Fusion? Shift + F12 during game play should do'er, Melf. It saves the screen shot as a .tga file, easily openable with Photoshop.
Shift and F12! I was pressing control. :P
Gotcha!
Ok, went back to the site and saw that this will have four save slots. Nice! It's only a 4MB cart, but that should be long enough.
God, I am so stoked about this!

4MB is huge for a Genesis game. That's 32 megs! Bigger than Phantasy Star IV or any other RPG.
LOl, I was thinking 4Megs like on the Master System. :P
Damn, that's pretty huge then. Make me want to play it even more.
On that note, I was looking at how to get in contact with Death Adder from Super Fighter about an interview, but they have no contact info on their site. There isn't even an email address for site questions.

Do characters in the original game really have names like "Arthur", as seen in the screenshot on the Beggar Prince website?
I hope the game is not excessively Americanized.
All character names have been preserved from the original Chinese release of the game: Prince Steven, Tom the beggar, Priest Sarah, Arthur, etc. The presence of "Americanized" names was completely the choice of C&E, Inc. and not of me. If it were the case that all characters had traditional Chinese names, I would have preserved them. ;)
The game never had an astounding amount of Chinese-specific names, details, or story bits, other than the main story itself being taken from Chinese lore. Rewriting the script I have kept with the original feel of the dialogue elements, but the overall quality of the plot and of the character development has been upped quite a bit. C&E produced a great game, but their script needed some retooling to help the overall product to shine just a bit more.

I don't do release date estimates as I find it rather unprofessional. If you give someone even a hint at a potential release date and then fail to make it, you're destined to let that person down.
I will, however, be more than happy to post an official release date as soon as I am 100% certain of what it is and that it can be met with no problems.
But, yes ... my initial announcement was correct, we're not far from seeing the game released for sale. ;)

That's not the point, I think.
People aren't going to buy Beggar Prince because its the newest, gloriest RPG out there. They are going to buy it because they love their Genesis, and are tickled to the fact that its a new release for it.
Same reasoning applies to the NEO AES hardware when Playmore was reintroduced to pick up the broken SNK pieces. Why did people (cough like me cough) pay $300 per game running on 16bit hardware when PS2 3D games were plentiful at $40 or less? Because we loved the hardware.
This isn't logical, but then playing or developing videogames aren't either.
Drixxel
08-16-2005, 01:55 PM
Hopefully everyone that plans on buying it completely understands that it's a re-release of a Taiwanese RPG from the mid '90s, as such expectations are being kept reasonable. As it is, this game will pretty much exclusively be bought by the more hardcore sect of the Genesis community, so it's not like Beggar Prince will be competing for shelf space against Final Fantasy somethingsomething.
That being said, I hope the game sells well enough and that we're all satisfied with the final product.

As far as the game 'living up to hype', I think that once a good deal of people have played a bit of the game here at the show and have a good taste of what it is, you'll begin to see some reviews trickle down. Use these commentaries to judge whether or not you feel the game is worthy of purchase, if you so desire. I doubt anyone will find problems with it; it's a great, solid game that we've put many quality hours of work into.

As for Square, the only RPGs of theirs that stick out in my mind are the Chrono games, FFVI, and FF: Tactics.

I really liked Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and FF7, but I liked the Lufia Series more than the rest of the Square games I listed.

The loading times between fights must not have bothered you much then...
I did beat Lunar 1 on SCD; one of the top 3 RPG experiences I've ever had. Nearly cried at parts in all seriousness.
But I gave up after a few fights playing Lunar 2 b/c the loading times between fights were really making me question spending all that latent time just waiting. To be fair, I recall him turning to face several people that walked up & showed interest in the game and asking them, "Would you like to have a turn?", as he gestured to them with the controller. So, I think to say f*ck him isn't so appropriate.

Where'd you derive that from? One post said f#ck him. The others echoed the sentiment that what he did was rude and needed to be told so. Since I wasn't there my only avenue to express my annoyance is the forum. Face-to-face would have been equally suitable.

:? Cowardice from people that were running/viewing the demo? If we want to follow that logic then maybe so, because that's what it seems like since no one told him otherwise. It's unfortunate no one went up and let him know.
Was it sorta polite of him to gesture to others as if to say: "Do you want a turn?" Sure, but quite frankly that's half-assed IMO.
Now did I literally say f*ck him? No, I said someone should have had the balls, gone up, and asked/told him to quit the game and let others have a turn. Unfortunately no one did, and thus you maybe right that those running/participating/viewing the demo were cowardly instead of, in PC terms, being polite. What he did was indeed rude and inconsiderate of others at the con. If he's a friend of yours or if you just didn't care that he hogged the game for 5 fricken hours then I can see why you didn't have a problem with it. But from what it looks like to me, and what others there have said, we've interpreted differently; and some of us would have acted differently.
Nontheless, I'm sure it was a mix of some not caring (like yourself), others being polite (like Drixxel mentioned), and others being cowardly by not speaking up.

I think "arcade ettiquette" should have been observed. For example, we all know that by placing your quarter down on the cab, reserves your spot for the next game.

I'm certainly not pleased that some people didn't get the chance to play the game at the CGE, regardless of the reasons. What I am proud of, at least, is the fact that I was able to talk with everyone who showed interest in the game, getting their impressions and answering their questions. I appreciate all the interest that communites such as this one have shown in the game, and can't wait for the official release. ;)

There are many people out there who out of politeness would have turned down the dude's offer to let them play, and instead wait for him to leave on his own.
And yet, no politeness here in the forum.
Welcome to the internet. :)
I guess, if he reads the "f*ck him" posts, it's perfectly okay because it isn't face-to-face? Sounds less like politeness and more like cowardice.
Oh come now. Don't get your panties in a wad just because I lightly drop f-bombs. If you read my other posts, you'll see me say things like, "fuck that game." I'm not speaking in any literal or serious sense.
And maybe it was "cowardly" of me to keep mum at the time, but I'm not one to raise a scene over something relatively minor. Especially since at the time, for all I knew I'd be playing it the next day.
And just to set the record straight, I wasn't pissed at him personally (if I was really angry, yes I would've said something to him), and in fact I was much more disappointed in the fact that on the second day, they closed the booth 3 fucking hours early. I almost raised a fuss over it when I saw them packing up, but instead I holed up in the Intellivision booth and cried for a while.*
* this is also not serious. Just so you know. Thanks in advance.
In any case, do try to remember that I did say I liked what I saw of the game, and bla bla. I would like to emphasize that I think Beggar Prince is a tremendous service to gamers, and I commend you for your work. Despite the tragedy of not being able to play it at CGE, you can certainly count me as one of the first people lined up to buy it. What I really hope for is that you and others see a viability in these sort of releases and do much more of them. That would make me giddy like a little girl.

CMA Death Adder had this to say over at the Digital Press boards:
The first print run is set at 600 copies. If you'd like to call that a "limited run", I would certainly understand. There's not much profit in this endeavor, and the production cost is high. So, we can't print a large amount of copies in hopes that they mystically sell over time.
Unless any unforseen issues present themselves, we plan to begin shipping Beggar Prince just before June. In any case, all pre-order customers will receive notification just before the games begin to ship.

Quoted from a post I made at the Digital Press forums:
"Despite our best efforts at protecting the game cartridge against piracy attempts, we would prefer to have an acceptable amount of orders on hand before beginning to ship the games. If piracy of Beggar Prince occurs, likely the amount of orders will decrease as people decide to rip us off by downloading a ROM copy rather than buying the complete game."

Its best to have the old grid scheme because: a) its old school. And b) It was used for both the Mega Drive and Genesis boxes. The newer boxes in Europe weren't red, they were blue (the best looking IMHO).

Oh my god. I just played for 3 hours and the game wouldnt let me save. Has anybody else had this problem?
Each and every game cartridge has been tested with special hardware prior to shipping to ensure that both the data area and the SRAM area are in good, working order. The visible proof of this is the single saved game that appears in slot 1 when choosing the "continue" option for the first time; it was a test save used to ensure there were no problems with the construction of the board as far as saving your game is concerned.
That said, you may only save your game while the prince is standing inside of a "time seal", or while you are walking on the world map. Saving your game is accomplished by pressing the START button during play, and selecting the icon of the pen writing in the book.
In order to save your game while inside a "time seal", the prince must be positioned over the "time seal" so that he is inside it (you'll see him, but the "time seal" will be swirling around his body).
Please refer to the instruction manual for more information.

Is the game in stereo? Any digitized sounds? Any scaling, rotation, or FMV? Does it use the SVP chip? Does it use the extra 68000 and sound chips in the Sega CD if one is hooked up? Is it better than Traysia?
I haven't encountered any FMV's, and I haven't noticed scaling or rotation, but I haven't really been looking for it. As for using the extra chips in the Sega-CD, I doubt it. It seems to sound the best on my Genesis 3. The sound effects are clearer and more audible than on my Genesis 2.
Beggar Prince, (especially the battles) plays a lot like a Phantasy star game in my opinion. (although I haven't played too much PS.) As you probably know, the combat is turn based. You have the option to use magic or your weapon. You can also pick up armor, and faster shoes. I may be wrong, but I remember Phantasy Star having a money system, which Beggar Prince does not. From what I've played of it, and looking at the map, I believe that the game is fairly lengthy.
I really can't say if its better than Traysia or not, but I am thoroughly enjoying it.
If your still trying to decide wether to buy or not keep in mind that in buying it you will improve the chances of another game being released for Genesis in the future.

It's a good game, I'm having fun with it. I have however ran into a few bugs here and there, nothing too serious. I haven't played too many genesis Rpg's, so i dont know what to compare it to, but I'd recommend it.

I've also encountered two bugs, neither of which are serious, nor do they detract from the game play.
On a side note, I'm stuck on the skull mountain, or at least I think thats what its called. I got the spear and went to the room with the place to save and all of the switches. I then made the boulder fall on the correct switch causing the other one to fall through the hole in the ground. However I have no idea what to do next...

go out of that room and then go to the room on the right of the next screen where it showed the splash and there will be a key, then use it to open the door and fight the boss.

I got the game today. Haven't played it yet, but the packaging and all looks great. I think May 22 should be called "the annual Sega-16 Beggar Prince day" to celebrate the fact that we have a new release to our good ol' Mega Drive/Genesis :).

We will be having a special BP edition of Reader Rountable next month though, and everyone who bought the game is encouraged to participate.

Ya I'm at the same place but after you beat the boss and go out the door and open that treasure chest on the cliffside and the rockslide begins, I can't figure out what to do. Got any ideas?

I had the same problem. Theres a rock in the bottom left corner that moves slowly left and then falls off the cliff. once it has fallen walk to where it was and fall off the cliff yourself.
Then you can go to the fairy garden. Its sort of a big open area. In the bottom left is the entrance to one village. In the bottom right is an enterance to another village, and in the top right is the entrance to a third village. In the far top right(next screen over) is the cactus (boss) that you have to kill.
I'm currently on the sand place (not sure what its called.)

Surely, someone within the Garden of Wonder should know something about that dangerous desert and its secrets...
I still haven't figured this out yet, but if I remember correctly, one of the people in the garden said that the entrance looked like quick sand until it was closely inspected. Then I realised that all of the quicksand flows in a clock wise direcion except for one, which appears to be inaccessable, that flows counter clockwise. Perhaps it is the enterance...
Translated from a chinese guide:
"Sand flow: Castle is a castle in the corner whirlpool entrance identify four kinds of goods (owls, dagger, legs, Fa Zhang) Based on these order items placed by the sun stone (Buda and Sweden) "
So the entrance is probably one of the quicksands.

I still haven't figured out the temple, but I have found a hidden cave. On the west side of the fairy garden(out side of it) follow the mountain range North until you get to the top of it, where it meets the water. then walk down into the mountain that is second from the right.
There is also another cave to the west side of the mountains to on the west side of the desert. It doesn't really have anything very useful in it though. just bread, dynamite and a healing fountain.

"... One bit of quicksand ian't a trap at all, it's a secret door. I had to look very closely but I'm sure of it now. It may be a secret entrance to the pyramid Even someone like you who can't fly should be able to find it if your careful. Walk along the far side of the pyramid to find this secret."
I'm pretty sure I know which one it is, I just don't know how to get to it...
landstalkerx
05-28-2006, 04:00 PM
I've finally figured this out. When your heading to the back of the pyramid, you pass the left side. There is a space between a cactus and quicksand where you can get down to the front of the pyramid. Then go down and around to the right side and go in the quick sand that is flowing counter clockwise

Ya, theres a gap in the trees after you ride the second cart-lift thing, i'm not sure exactly where but if you stumble around that area you should find it.

It had nothing to do with the translation. Apparently, it's something in the code itself that doesn't allow it to run through a 32X, CDX, X'EYE, or other Genny/CD hybrid. It does work fine with a model 1 or 2 Genesis connected to a Sega CD though.
