I accidentally started a Game Gear collection and was wanting some suggestions for mods or anything similar to that worth buying or getting done. For example, is there some kind accessory or mod that would allow me to play on a television? I'm also not specifically looking for first party. Just anything that makes the Game Gear even cooler. Thanks.

Consider an LED mod or replacing the screen with a DS backlight screen or something.

That would be cool. That a pretty basic soldiering job?

There is a TV out mod but it's certainly not simple. See here (http://disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/segahacking/ggrgb.html).

Thank you for this. Seems like a good guide.

Also relevant is the recent news that the Retron 5 is supposedly getting a Game Gear adapter. They plan to release it by the end of the year.

Oh really? Okay I'm officially more interested in this now. That sounds like a great feature.

yeah, but it's gonna be @ass emulation. Stick to the real hardware if you want the real thing. I modded mine with TV out and the LED backlight among other things, and it's great. I posted a guide on how to do the LED backlight mod on this forum (quick search and it will turn up).

It really depends on which emulator they go with. We don't know at this point (and likely neither does the emulator author).

I'm really not a big fan of emulation, but there is some cool stuff out there sometimes. I will definitely check out your guide. Much appreciated.

Here's the solution for the TV out:

That one is pretty outdated now that someone made one that includes a Genesis controller port wired to use START as a pause button.

I almost bought one of those until I realized the Genesis controller is backwards compatible with SMS. Literally all you need is a DB-9 plug. Just wire the A,B,GND, and START to the button traces in your GG.

Well, the GGTV board allows you also to change the TFT screen of the GG because it outputs composite signal. You just have to buy a cheap ebay 3.5 inch screen, mount it, connect it to the GGTV board and you'll have THE BEST mod for your GG.

Screen Magnifier - Invaluable for SMS mode games like Castle of Illusion and Chase HQ where the screen display is a lot smaller. It would be even more useful if it could be used in conjunction with the Master Gear Adaptor but it's impossible to use both at the same time.

Master Gear Adaptor - not the best way to play Master System games but a neat way to increase your game library

Game Genie and Action Replay carts

Japanese games -such beautiful artwork/packaging

Limited edition GG models (red, light blue, dark blue, yellow, white, Virtua Fighter, Magic Knight Rayearth and Coca Cola)

There is also a GG Everdrive available (runs SMS games as well)

The thing with a screen LED mod, is you have to be wary of light-spotting (it's easy to create brighter areas of the screen by placing the leds incorrectly)

The lcd mod is pretty nice, might consider doing it on my own GG

That style of mod is old news now. This is the future:
http://www.smspower.org/forums/15585-NewMod35LCDReplacementBoardGameGearWithVGAFULLSCRE EN

Fully scaled without boarders on the internal GG screen in RGB with hi-res VGA output. A little more in cost but wayyyyy worth it!

Very cool. I didn't watch the video, so I don't know if it said or not - but I'm assuming this can be used in lieu of a GGTV board?

Yes, but it wont have Composite or S-video. Only VGA (and I think 15khz RGB). You can build your own video converter for the composite output, using a CXA1645 or similar. Or just buy a JROK board.

Wanted to show some alternative points to solder for the McWill incase anybody is interested. Makes installation look a little nicer.

Also make sure not to remove R30, like the instructions say. R30 is for the low voltage detection and the LED will not blink (on low battery) if you remove it. I contacted McWill about 8 months ago about the problem. Not sure if he's updated his instructions.

Are there any mods which improve battery life?
