I just got an NES yesterday and I am wondering what games I should buy for it. I sadly only have two games and that is SMB/ Duck Hunt and Dragon Warrior.

"Lifeforce" and a little game called "Rockin' Kats".
I also recommend "Wacky Races" but the game is kinda easy and a bit pricey.

I highly recommend:
Blaster Master
Clash at Demonhead
Shatterhand
StarTropics
Vice: Project Doom
Whomp'em (nice ripoff of Wonderboy)
I also recommend you look into some repro carts, as some of the best NES games are unreleased. So far I have 4 repros and they're all great:
EarthBound
Moon Crystal
Squashed!
Super Mario Bros. 2 (j)
...there's probably only two or three more that are worthwhile, but still.

Here are my favorites (in no particular order):
-Mega Man 2
-Blaster Master
-Super Mario Bros 2 (US version trounces Japan's which is just more of Mario 1)
-Castlevania
-Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
-Contra
-Super C
-Double Dragon
-Double Dragon 2 - THE REVENGE
-Gun.Smoke
-Gauntlet (Tengen version, not Mindscape)
There are plenty of other great titles to get as well.

All these games sound great, Though I have to say that Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest are the same game, just a different name. I wont have a problem finding games for the NES because of the hole in the wall store I go to has over 50 NES games and he is always getting in new stuff. I will probably have to check out that Kirby game seeing as I have Kirby's Dream Land 2 for the GB and love it!

Skip the first Turtles game, it sucks. The control is quite terrible...plus it isn't all that fun.
"Manhattan Project" is the best one on the system.

Final Fantasy
Megaman 1 - 6 (The best of which being 2 and 3)
Kirby's Adventure
Dr. Mario

No love for the Ninja Gaiden series? One of the first uses of cinematic cut-scenes to drive the story of a video game. Tough as nails, too. So, my list:
Ninja Gaiden 1-3
Mega Man 2-3
Metroid
RC Pro Am
Contra
Super C
Chrystalis
Zelda 1 and 2
Life Force
Blaster Master (best music on NES imo)
The Guardian Legend
Mario 2 and 3
Lots more, but that should get you started!

I can't believe no one has mentioned M.C. Kids!! That game is like the best non-Mario platformer on the system. Shame..... shame...... :|

What kind of game is shadowgate? I seen it at my local hole in the wall store for six dollars and was reluctant to purchase it.

It's a point and click adventure game with very frustrating puzzles and trial & error gameplay. Still it's very atmospheric and the soundtrack is excellent.

Also forgot to mention
Wally Bear and the NO gang!
The game was a little hard and furstrating.
But I had fun playing it.
Now to answer any questions I am aware of the games edutainment value. And there is alot of fun to be had if you can get past that.I honestly don't view Wally as an edutainment title.

Another good nes game is Double Dragon 2.The First one was okay the third an abombanation.Yes I am talking about the nes versions.Double Dragon 2 is better because of the atmosphere it has.
The best Double Dragon game in my opinion is the turbo-duo DD2.

The Mega Man series was awesome, along with the Super Mario Bros. series obviously, and duck hunt would be a good idea, years of fun right there.

I've never played Quattro Arcade, but I give a big thumbs down to Quattro Adventure. At first glance, all four games seem okay, but they get very annoying very quickly. They feel like really crappy C64 games.

You didn't like quattro adventure?
Well quattro arcade is more of the same.
In the states commodore 64 wasn't as popular as in europe.
But I think what games are crossplatform are fun.
Gives you a little taste of that computer magic c64 had.

Commodore 64 was, for a while, more popular in the US than in Europe. In Europe, Commodore had much more competition from the likes of Spectrum, Amstrad, BBC Micro, etc. Commodore 64's popularity in Europe only outpaces its popularity in the US later in its lifecycle, as Europe's 8-bit computer market stayed strong for much longer than in the US, where we moved on to 16-bit systems (x86, Macintosh, Amiga, ST) more quickly. In both the US and Europe, Commodore 64 remains, to this day, the best-selling single computer of all time.
... Anyway, I have no problem with crossplatform games from C64 (I even own a few C64 ports for NES and SMS), but they have to actually be good. I actually liked a lot of Codemasters' stuff, but Treasure Island Dizzy is a black eye on the Dizzy series, Linus Spacehead is worse than Cosmic Spacehead (which also sucks, but had potential), Super Robin Hood is just plain dull, and Boomerang Kid is a really stupid game. I have never even played the Commodore 64 versions of Treasure Island Dizzy and Super Robin Hood, so I don't know if the originals were better or what (the other two games were exclusive to Quattro, if I'm not mistaken).
Sorry if I sound a bit vitriolic. The intensity of my disliking of Quattro Adventure stems from the fact that it seems really cool at first, and then it just gets really irritating over time. I'm grateful of my decision back in the day to rent it rather than buy it.

Well, I just got Ninja Gaiden to day and it is just freakin' awesome. It has it all, great graphics, music and gameplay. I also love the cutscenes. It is hard to believe this came out in 1989!
