1x CD-ROM drive, and not enough RAM.. no, you can't fix it..
I mean, you can upgrade the RAM by replacing the chips to have more RAM, but it won't take advantage of it...

How big is the Genesis cart version of the game? I can't believe each morph of the character would fill the entire 6 megs of RAM. Of course it would be better if the dude just had all of the moves instead graphically morphing to each character. God I hate Mortal Kombat.

I believe the CD version loads more "frames" of animations, and much more PCM audio tracks that all have to fit in the RAM.. As technically, the CD-ROM drive is busy playing red book.. when something happens like a fatality, the CD has to stop red book, go to track 1, read data, and go BACK to red book..

PCM has 4mbits of its own RAM and doesn't share the 6mbit main RAM. Although I firmly believe there is no way to make this game good, I do think they could have made it more efficient in regards to the loading.

That Sucks, Besides, Genesis version of mk1 have better music anyway!

If there were at least an option in the game to have "Genesis music", then the loading you see would likely be greatly reduced and definitely less intrusive.

I'm just happy the game included the remixed version of the main "Mortal Kombat" theme. Now I don't have to track down the single.
The game is crap and I only keep the thing (its CD only) for the remixes and maybe the arcade music used.
I really tried to like Sega CD MK because it fixes so many things wrong with the Genesis version, but then it has it's own set of evil demons in regards to the coma inducing load times, and then that whole problem you discovered with Shang Tsung at the end... just kills the little improvement they made.

I agree, it sucks that way - they did same thing in 32X mk2 where grafik didnt show much improvement, and even sound is bad, new sound they added was not really in harmony with original one from genesis, they kept original sound from genesis + new sounds for 32 x wich are louder and really slappy puted in by programers!

Its unfortunate that Acclaim didn't put in an option to turn off the Shang Tsung morphs, kind of like what was done on the PSX version of MK3. It would have made the last boss battle less painful to play through.
I tried to like the SegaCD's single player mode, but I usually just play the 2-player mode with a friend of mine who is a MK fanatic.

I think this was the closest thing to an arcade perfect console MK1 that was ever made.

PCM has 64Kilobytes or 512Kilobits rom, not 4Mbits. Still, you could store some additional frames in there - not sure how much of a help that would be (I don't know the size of the animation you guys are talking about).
The main CPU in 1M/1M mode has access to 5Mbits of ram, with 1Mbit that can be swapped in and out from the SUB-CPU address range. I don't see why 5Mbits wouldn't be enough for a whole single level of MK1. Is the system actually stopping the music to load new frames? o_O

Yeah, as I recall the PlayStation and Saturn Mortal Kombat games both suffered from the Shang Tsung pauses, and some reviews even go so far to say it pauses briefly per special move as well. I think the 32X Mortal Kombat is probably the best to get based on my experience, though I really don't keep up with the series. I only bought it since there was so little out for the unit and it looked very colorful. :)
