Who doesn't like Micro Machines? Simple, yet incredibly addictive, Codemasters beloved series reached legendary heights with the introduction of the ingenius J-Cart, which allowed up to four people to enjoy the fun. While not as ambitious as those later installments, the original game still holds its own against the competition and is more than worth the purchase price. We've a full review (http://www.sega-16.com/2007/08/micro-machines/) for you courtesy of first-time contributor Stephen Sheehan, so read on and get ready for some big fun with small cars!

There's a Master System version of this game? I hope it's not called RC Pro-Am.

Ha-HA!

Yeah, anyway. Someone needs to scrape together some info on those J-Carts. Who devised them, why are they called that? Why didn't more games use them? What games did?

I have many questions.

Were Codemasters just being attention seekers with the "J-carts - the controller ports" cartridges, you know the ones that were oddly shaped but had no other benefit seemingly.

Micro machines 2, fantastic dizzy and cosmic spacehead have them, any reason other than attention seeking?

No different than Electronic Art's unique cartridges. I recall Accolade/Ballistic games having unique shells as well, but I'm too lazy to verify.

You're on the ball there Benjamin, star control from accolade and some goddamn awful winter sports game has it aswell, as tall as an Ea Cartridge but with rounder, smoother edges....

Thanks, just needed to know, its actually pissing off because you have those god damn awkward carts that disrupt the beautiful drawer system by being disproportionate to all the others,

Oh but how I still love you star Control.........

Cartridges were usually produced by Sega themselves. In the case of EA and Accolade the carts had different shapes because they were not produced by Sega.

Both companies threatened Sega that they would publish their games even without Sega´s permission (and Accolade did so) because they could bypass the Genny´s security and produce their own carts wihout Sega earning a penny.
Sega gave them their licenses in the end anyway (to at least get license fees), but I guess they could not interfere with the companies´own cart-production. That was cheaper for EA and Acolade.
I am not sure about Codemasters though; I suppose the only reason there was the cartridge-ports....

I'm pretty sure the thickness is the same, no? The Accolade cartridges never bothered me much, but I loathed the EA ones. Genesis cartridges fit perfectly in audio cassette storage containers... except for those awful tall EA games. Stupid useless yellow tab.

The first Micro Machines has been completely surpassed by its three sequels. The game was good at the time but retrospectively it's crap and has aged worse than any of the other games in the series (as all the ones after it are still very playable).

Another good game similar to micro machines is combat cars by Accolade.
Which strangly enough I have seen in the accolade cart and normal cart form.

They are same thickness, but their length is shorter and that disrupts the perfect uniformity of my draweres, the EA cartridges are ugly and rubbish, but hey they serve one purpose.... they are easier to avoid now

The difference is that Combat Cars is utter tosh, while Micro Machines (not the first one) stands atop the pinnacle of awesomeness.
