View Full Version : Vectorman 2, as good as the first one?
I was thinking of getting vectorman 2, wanted to know if it was any good?

Not really. It's not as impressive graphically (the levels are so dark that you can't see very well), and it doesn't innovate much at all. Pretty much V1 with less exciting levels...
But for the little $$$ it will take to buy it, I would say go for it. A mediocre game, but not horrible. There's a review for it at the main site if you're interested. (Courtesy Shinigami, I believe.)

I disagree about the graphics, I think they're amazing in that they actually managed to improve on the incredible graphics of the first. However, the levels simply aren't as good. They repeat the same type of level like twice every time. Not as much variety, or tight design as the first. It's definitely still a good game though, and worth getting.
I agree with j factor. The graphics are astounding, but the level design suffered. Such is the result of a different team handling the sequel. :(
Rick Schmitz and co. did a great job, but the lack of input from the original team hurt the game's feel, IMO.
i'm waiting for my copy to get in. While shopping for this game, I acquired an entire case (20 copies) of this game. Couldn't help it the price was good.
Graphically speaking, how does it compare to other platformers I'm more familiar with? Sonic, Knuckles Chaotix, Ghouls and Ghosts, Contra: Hard corps...
How does it compare with other 16-bit offerings from the time period? Does it really hold its own against Donkey Kong Country?

The graphics are second to none. Everything is utterly beautiful--rendered objects, lighting and shadows...
Vectorman 1 was more of a shock graphically, but #2 is still a great specimen.
As for comparisons to DK, I don't think so. Nothing of the 16 bit era can touch DK's graphics.
I dont' know about that, 32x Knuckles Chaotix. The graphics in DKC were impressive because they were prerendered on an SGI machine then scaled down. Ultimately they're just well painted sprites using the snes color palette.

Yeah.. Donkey Kong Country has amazingly detailed pre-rendered visuals, but aside from utilizing the expansive SNES colour palette, the game isn't that demanding of the console. DKC is still an obvious graphical landmark of the 16-bit age, but a different kind from Vectorman and Vectorman 2 that pulled all manner of graphical tricks that the public generally thought of as foreign to the Genesis hardware. DKC and Vectorman 2.. both are puuurdy, and good lord a lot of work must have been put into them. Appreciate!...

I don't think DKC's graphics are all that amazing. It just uses rendered sprites.
Vectorman 2 has some nice light source effects, and amazingly fluid animation -- even rotoscoping isn't as smooth.
My copy hasn't come in yet.. <sob>
I read the review over and over again, and I need a run and gun for my collection...

Gunstar Heroes or Contra would fill that craving far better than Vectorman will.
I didn't like gunstar heroes at all...
I love contra, but I need something more megaman like...
This question might be spoiler for vectorman 2 just in case for those who haven't played it.
For those who have passed Vectorman 2 is the ending just a congratulations?
I passed the game on normal and that's all I got. If it was what a let down.

I'm pretty sure if you beat it on the hardest difficulty you get a cutscene, which is animated in a similar fashion to the opening scene.

It was hilarious how the original Vectorman knew if you were cheating, even if you used a Game Genie. =)

thanks. I got play it on difficult now.
holy crap, even on lame this game is hard as hell..
I made it as far as lvl 3.
The graphics are gorgeous though. Kinda dark, but looks really good.
Sound is really good too, I love the synth voice.
I gota bunch of copies if anyone wants one =)
Is level 3 the tree climbing stage? that one is hard and annoying.
Ok, I played this again some more last night and I'm convinced the original is leagues better. The level design here is just horrible, and you're forced to make blind jumps, often landing on an enemy. It also suffers from the accursed "fly back when hit" syndrome that made early Castlevania and Mega Man games so frustrating some times.
Yes level 3 is the climbing level, and yes it does suffer from getting knocked back when hit. I didn't know it was a bad thing, I thought it was normal platform stuff
So far its better than earthworm jim. I really hated earthworm jim because it was simply too damn hard. Ended up selling my copy i hated it so much.
I like the fact that the game is all dark and foreboding. Is the rest of the game like that?

Earthworm Jim is too hard?

Earthworm Jim only seems too hard until you get the hang of it - most sections have a strategy that has to be learned. I used to think that the game was as hard as you think now, but having played it a lot I can now beat the entire game without continuing, and without losing a life before Snot a problem round 3 (that one always gets me).

Earthworm Jim only seemed difficult in some of the later levels. I never found it to be an abnormally hard game.
Those levels where you have to save the puppies can get frustrating though. Or was that only in EWJ2? I can't remember.

That's EWJ2, the "Puppy Love" levels. In the first game you only have to protect Peter Puppy himself in "For Pete's Sake".

Ah that's right.
Vectorman 2

As for the blind jumps, you can hold down the down button and look. Requires a little strategy =)
Earthworm Jim

Any game I can't beat the first level within a two hour period is too hard.

I just picked this up. Again, the levels are nowhere near as snazzy as the original.
Well, guess that means I have to get the original after I beat the 2nd one =) I'm pretty happy with the 2nd one, so better not ruin it with a better game till i'm done with it =)

You couldn't beat New Junk City... in two hours?
That's... wow. You're really bad at Earthworm Jim.

I only got to level three as well. :owned:

I got up to the skating levels on my first runthrough, but by then I was a bit tired of Vectorman and switched to King of the Monsters 2.
I guess I'm so into it b/c I've never played any of them before, i've only known that the first one had a reputation for being really good.
I'm supposed to have a gamers card? I hope I don't get a ticket for drivin the sega machine w/o a license.....
I might be interested in a copy, please pm me with info and price.
Still have plenty of copies $4 + shipping.
I'm still stuck in lvl 3, anyone have a map of which platforms I need to jump on. I got lost...

I think you go up the first trees then go more to the right to the farthest trees that will take you more up. From there go back to the middle tree and keep going to far left tree. It is tough you just got to find branches that you can stand on.

I remember when both these games came out.. my neighbor got it and took me on to beat the game to see if he won the prize.
we didn't
Never got to play the second one though, but I just bought one off Mel so I'll get to play it soon.
as for EWJ... that was one of my most played platformers (aside from sonic). EWJ Special Edition, holy poo crap I love that game. I can womp that game so fast in hard, Shiny even told me to tell myself, "IM THE BEST!"

I liked the second one better, only because I played it first, plus it was one of the last Genesis games I rented back in the day.
I'm sad, I know.

Man Veccie 2 was simple,It could have improve and prove its right aggianst DK country but noooo al the nice lightning,Transparacie and shadow effect are gone.I was blown away by veccie 1 the games was one big trasparantic,Lightning joy ride it played fast It looked astauding everything was animated<Dk country didnt have much animations just FMV,s Big sprites etc.Tough the color limitation 64 was schred by veccie and he did trow in like 90 colors in a still standing screen and like 125 with animations inc (DK country beat that) Oke one Thing is right Snes has more colors and sprites,But then what do you have with Not much animations like MD had.You get DK country a few Sprites using for fotos Or fmv,s,Take a good look at DK country 2 its sky Its all one FMV.vectorman is one big lumination adventure, that still asstouns me.veccie 2 wasnt as good to sett a sequal al the lumintion was gone and where replaced by just standart animations instead of transparntics and the lvel design was just as every gennises game,Still for not much money its worth to pick upp.Like the man sead 4$ i would buy it if i didnt have it but thats youre decision.I give the first 9,5 and 2nd 8,They should have made a third one. ;)
