View Full Version : Forum's beginnings

I think we can all agree that when a forum is started the forum master or creators are desperate to get a community thriving,

Established forums like this one don't have too much to worry about regarding dormancy and lack of members posting, but some do, especially in the beginning when they are looking to establish themselves.

So my question is if any of ye have had ye're own forums, have ye had extra "fake" accounts going to try and get the ball rolling?

What about Melf? Were any of the original members of this forum "fakies" whose purpose was to gain momentum before the community could run on its own steam?

I had a friend one time who ran his own forum, he posted well over 40% of the posts out of his own account, and we were all suspisious that perhaps a few of the very small community were him aswell trying to get things going, any funny stories?

Sega-16's board used to be on a different server, so the forum you're used to is actually v2.0. No, I'm not aware of any post cheating. There were just about twelve of us who posted hundreds of times and about twenty more who casually posted.

After we moved the board and S16 gained steam (esp. after we got the huge Kalinske traffic boom), the rest is history.

Yeah, it usually works the way Genesis said.

Yeah, it usually works the way Genesis said.

What rubbish is this guy on about, its the same guy the whole time, constant trolling, post accumulating, adding nothing, attention seeking, I could go on....

The rubbish that some "imposter" robbed his account is pathetic its obviously him all along, sure blades was making some excuse for him in the "my friend can't post new threads" thread, then 10 mins later he spouts some rubbish like "Blades informed me an imposter was on ruining my name (4 Off-topic posts before that day), so I'm coming on to (spam the board some more (didn't see that coming) clear my name, his very first post "lol", I was 17 only 3 years ago, but I'm sure it was probably closer to 6 years ago since I found stuff like penis grease funny...

But what harm, I'm just highlighting the obvious it doesn't actually bother me, just when I see irrelevant posts popping up out of nowhere outside of "ask, answer a question."

Anyway back to Genesis Knight

Whats the kalinske traffic boom?

Melf's exclusive interview with Tom Kalinske was the first time TK talked about the Sega Genesis days. The interview was linked around the world and we got tons of hits.

Hey,

I KNOW Meoang can be an ass sometimes and be extremely childish but if you knew him in real life he's really different. I'm Sorry for trying to make an excuse for him but I usually defend my friends if put in that situation. But I'm kinda torn in this situation. Sega-16 is one of my fav forums by far and as far as I know, I'm not regarded as a troll (right?) but Meo is one of my friends irl. So I apologize about this behavior, I'll be having a little talk with him about this matter soon.

But on-topic, I can see what you said in your first post happening. I'm well aware of many forums that got their headstart like this (ahem...audiokarma). I was watching sega-16 since the very beggining so I don't know when it exploded, it was always a very resourceful genny site for me. I think being listed on Wiki is also a good way to get your forum started up.

I wish Archive.org had saved the actual forum from before, instead of the just the original site design, that'd really show how we got started. IOW, with no fake accounts and all real people creating what you see before you one day at a time.

@ Vinny thats very impressive although I'm a little dissapointed wouldn't it be really funny if Melf was doing that, and ye just goes Mr. X was actually a dud poster....

@Blades, I'll be honest with you, I actually find the moronic and childish posts very funny, (not that they're witty or anything) I find it even funnier, when ye do this big apology or defence of the friend rubbish, its a forum for godsakes I don't know ye from adam....

Sounds like Sega-16 needs a classic thread sub-forum. The Gen vs. TG16 vs. SNES thread, which respawned into one about transparencies, is an obvious candidate.

I think it's a good idea. Just sticky in some of the more hilarious/amazing threads we've had.

That'd be a good idea, I'd like to see that happen.

Another candidate could be GZues's posting that got him banned....or not. your call.

Yeah, for some reason this forum has a crapload of lurkers. I mean, they're probably regulars they lurk so much...

To the lurkers viewing this thread: join the community, guys. We'd love to have you.

@Meong and Blades, ye personally do not in anyway annoy me, in fact ye're constant (mostly rubbish) posting brightens up the forum during work, no problem at all, although I feel compelled to highlight some of the rubbish ye post, those hilariously over the top lame apologies and excuses.... so what its mildly entertaining, I just find it funny when I call ye out, ye all of a sudden stop the constant flow of rubbish into "ask answer a question" and go stupidly defensive, I'm only fooling around, for godsake I happen to know Rodrash and you should see what he posts, nothing but pure rubbish, a troll nothing more....

@ On topic - It would be awesome to go back and read the foundations of this forum, I enjoy looking back at some of the members past exchanges, Mel, Vicman, Lord of Duct and Strida Col, even knuckles Chaotix seem to have been good members lost over time, obviously there are new ones in their place but archives are always nice,

Regarding the lurkers, I don't think its that bad, there is the perfect flow of posts into sega-16 enough to browse often and read new posts, there is always someone looking for an offtopic chat if you want to hang about, and if you frequent only ever 2 days, things have never progressed terribly far and so you end up with a nice readthrough, perfect imo.

A lot of those "lurkers" are just search engines spidering the site. Check out what they are "reading". Many of them also try to reply to threads even though they aren't registered simply because it's another link.

Ehh I was a long time lurker before finally registering. Actually I still lurk more than post but whatever. Anyways I checked out the old site via archives.org and without having to see the boards I can already say this place has greatly improved. Its a pretty active community and saves me from having to go to the hell that is the sega.com boards. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit just thinking about those boards oh man.

Wow I'd have to advise anyone with a small bit of free time, to go back and take a trip down sega-16 memory lane via archives.org, thanks for that ad2101, that is awesome. What can I say though! The background was a killer, even a diehard megadrive enthusiast like myself could have been put off by the fact it was so hard to read anything! You have to highlight each page, and the forum well that is really cool. Only 3668 posts, which is very respectable for a new forum only a year old, but compared to now, wow thats all I have to say.

VinnyT
08-23-2007, 12:58 PM
The background didn't always look like that, it's just that way now because the original image is gone so something needs to be there, so the whole page has an odd look. The original site was easier than that to read.

Oh MY GOD....

I bring nothing to the conversation so i'd rather just say random stuff because I think it's funny.

I ran an ezboard for a while. I think I got like five people to post there... then it went down the shitter.

I've been posting on MB's now for well over seven years and I miss the early days. :(
