You don't tend to think of the Genesis whenever the topic of first person shooters comes up. After all, the genre was in its console infancy at the time, and Sega's old work horse isn't exactly known for its 3D prowress. Even so, there are a few games here and there, including Accolade's Zero Tolerance, a title that every Genesis owner should boot up at least once, just to get the gist of how a 3D FPS runs on the console. We've got a full review (http://www.sega-16.com/2007/09/zero-tolerance/) for you, so read up and then get to playing!

FIRST!

Ahem... I might want to note that I did have fun with the game, even if it's not actually all that great. Enjoyment will vary.

Well put. That's pretty much what I thought about the game as well, but I feel the soundtrack deserves some more bashing.

I pulled out my old Zero Tolerance cart (it's huge with yellow fins). I must say I did enjoy it more than I thought I would however it is incredibly unfulfilling with bland graphics and uninspired level design. It's probably one of those negatives outwaying the positives scenarios for me.

Awesome game. I got it a month ago, completely unaware to what it was. I'd rather play this than 32x DOOM, hands down. Now, if I can get a link cable...:D

Good game, clearly superior to Battle Frenzy.

Zero Tollerance is tosh.
The review is fair and ballanced, but personally I believe the negatives greatly outweight the positives.

Personally I can't really rate this title, there just isn't anything to it, remember the psone had this hardware where you could go home and make your own games, and then ps magazines would put the homebrews onto their demos?

I remember one guy made an fps, all with the same corridors and bad guys and only 4 levels with one type of gun... It was probably more fun than ZT because of smoothness...

I don't recall the Zero Tolerance cart having "yellow fins".

I say the review is spot on! What's maybe missing is the info that the rom is freely available on the Technopop-Homepage as well, since the owner of the trademark and copyright decided to make the image available into public domain. (Though I have to admit, playing this game emulated on a PC only reminds one of how many better FPS there are for home computers).

Played the game back in the day when it was released; never bought it, just got it as a rental. It was fun for a while, but even then the graphics and sounds never really impressed me.

Not quite sure, either, as my cart was just an Accolade Bubsy-style casing.

Thanks for the props, guys.

How much would this game go for on average?

I'm kind of interested in it but don't want to pay too much as I often get bored with older FPSes. :?

Zero Tolerance is pretty cheap and you will get bored of it quickly.

It runs right around $5 in the wild; about $8 including shipping on eBay.

they could have done more amazing Fps on the genesis with actually good graphics and sound, toy story for instance that alien kind of shoot level.I would really like to see a decent port of duke on the genesis with some effort in it.

Yeah, that Toy Story stage was impressive, but it was also very limited - just one texture, no objects to speak of, etc.

I wanna say Steve Coogan (the guy from the crap Around the world in 80 Days remake, but i'd probably be REALLY wrong)

Oh, and well done this time Nick! I've always enjoyed my times with this game.

Nope, you're spot on. That's Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge, whose catch phase is A-HA.

I never really got on with Zero Tolerance myself. I can't put my finger on why but I never found it very fun.

I've now played few levels of ZT and found it fun and better than DOOM.This game trully pushes Genesis into it's entire limits as it renders 3D Graphics directly from the 68000 Processor(Yes,no Super FX chips or Virtua Processors) and there should apply phrase "Genesis Does,What Nintedon't(with exception of the Super FX)"

Zero Tolerance is indeed a great game, the only problem it has is that there's too many of the same levels.
some variation would have been welcome.

Its a damn shame the sequel was never finished, sure we got the beta rom straight from Technopop,
but i'd rather have had the source code and files so it could have been fan finished! :p

I'm partial to FPS games myself and recommend people to track down Battle Frenzy, Zero Tolerance, and Duke Nukem 3D for genesis/md games. All games of Cyber Cop should be destroyed. That sums up all of the Genesis FPS's. I'm not sure if TOTOTEK wants this advertised, but I bought an md32pro flash cart from him cart only($35 plus $8 shipping) and he loaded duke nukem 3d on if for me for free. Since it takes up all of the flash cart there is no menu so it loads up like a regular game and he put it in a generic new blank cart with nickel coated?(silver looking) phillips head screws. It works great and the save works how its supposed to. Battle Frenzy I had to pay about $50 for it and cart only. It is from europe but it works fine on an american genesis FYI. Zero Tolerance you could easily get complete for less than $10usd.

I think that Zero Tolerance could have looked better and had a bigger viewable playing area, but it is a solid game. A couple of complaints. When they say Zero Tolerance, they weren't kidding. You can get thru a big maze on the sub-basment levels, miss one enemy, then spend another hour trying to find the one you missed to complete the level. Also, by the last couple levels, there is no ammo available so you better conserve or you will have nothing for the last two levels and the boss. Password system isn't too bad as it takes a while to complete the levels. One pain is you have to complete the level you are on or all your work is lost.

I don't agree with this review. This game oozes atmosphere and it's flaming fun to play. Yeah, it gets a little repettive, but that's what the password system is for!

This deserves a 7 or 8, not a 5.

I second this. I had so much fun with the game back then. Pulse Laser rocks.

Sorry for double-post, but I've just completed the game for the first time in a while, and I have to say that this is the worst review on the site. The game is amazing and it is an easy 7 at least. In 1994 there were not so many FPS games on any console with this diverse weapon selection and this atmosphere.

The review itself is pretty much on the mark in my opinion and echoes my own feelings about Zero Tolerance perfectly. It's also pretty complimentary about the game so I expected to see higher than a 5 at the end. I don't take too much stock in the scores anyway since they tell me nothing about the game except that the reviewer liked it, disliked it, or didn't care. It's not a consensus or anything.

I would give it a 6 or 7 though because in spite of its troubles it's still fun. Regardless, it hasn't really aged that well and playing it usually just makes me want to play a better FPS from the same era. I can barely stand the framerate these days. I'm not going to be apologetic about the Genesis limitations though. The reviews should be written for people today, not people in 1994. Well, retro-gamers today so they can be a little apologetic but within reason. I still think Zero Tolerance gets by mostly on nostalgia.

And not to hurt any feelings but I think the worst review on the site is Super Thunder Blade =P.

I liked this game in '94. After that I played numerous FPS games, my memories of ZT faded, and I started to think that ZT maybe wasn't that good.

When I decided to play it again on emulator, I expected to see some ugly, sluggish and boring mess. I was pleasantly surprised how PLAYABLE it still is and how it doesn't look as bad as many think. I love it.

Exactly! But playing on real hardware with a huge screen and with zoom is better :D

I actually had the opposite reaction I found it a lot less enjoyable than I remembered. It depends on the player's expectations I guess.

Just got this game. Man I love it!

It's actually the only First-Person Shooter I've ever owned. (Didn't have a PC back when Doom etc. were blowing up.) Also haven't followed many games past the Genesis era, so yeah, never had a FPS before. I've played a little at friend's houses, like Halo and 007 on N64. Their controls are obviously complex so I love the simple controls of Zero Tolerance. Just shoot in front of you and they're dead. :D

I was just having a discussion about the ZT link cable with a friend, which led me to google the technopop image on how to make your own link cable.

However.. I came across the following image.

http://www.sega-16.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Sega-Gear-Zero-Tolerance-Link-Cable-1.jpg
http://www.sega-16.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Sega-Gear-Zero-Tolerance-Link-Cable-1.jpg

Which made me scratch my head, for some reason the Technopop site now has the original gif converted to a jpg image,
which is strange, because compressing it to jpg changed it from 5.632 kb to 12.234 kb

Because I'm such a nice guy here is the original gif picture that I got from the Technopop site years ago.

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/7414/segagenesiszerotoleranc.gif

Now should the compressing have been done because of the gif licensing issue then here's the same image saved as a png image.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3220/segagenesiszerotoleranc.png

Now it's even smaller! only 2.952 kb

Hmm, I need to make that cable; got a few dead controllers, a couple of copies of ZT and some spare solder...somewhere.

I still got the original mail in link cable for this game. That I never used once. I wish they could figure out a way to play this on a Mega Everdrive with the USB port for online play.
