I haven't played enough Genesis RPG's to really say, probably Shining Force, with Phantasy Star IV a close second.
On the genesis Phantasy Star 4 all the way. I didn't want that game to end.

Not only is this on a genesis board, but you should also keep in mind that FF7 is overrated, and not that great.

Yeah, 3 was the best IMHO. Then they became playable movies..
On Genny I like Phantasy Star 2 and 4 and Shining in the Darkness.
Check out The Immortal. It's one of the most orignal games ever. Very rewarding if you are patient and have lots of hair to pull out

That is garbage. FF7 has one thing that no other RPG has. The greatest story of all time. It is a very difficult story to follow the first time, and the gameplay makes it excellent. FF3 might be good, but the story just isn't as good.
As far as Genesis... Shining Force 2 has to be my favorite...
But I still stand by Earthbound!!! MR. SATURN!!

I agree that the FF games all have fantastic story lines. But I think the gameplay was the best in 3. I loved the magic system, characters and story and how they all came together in one package.

I based my response on the responses of others. Several peopl ehad already posted non-genesis RPGs. I know people hate FF7, but I enjoyed it really well. I understand its a Genesis board, but Genesis isn't all that RPG heavy either.
My RPG all time fave top 5 list.
Final Fantasy 7
Grandia II (Dreamcast)
Chrono Cross (psone)
phantasy star II (Genesis I'm still playing)
Final Fantasy XI (great game, crappy ppl)
Ys Book 1 & 2 are my favorites, followed by Phantasy Star II.
Grandia II was cool, but I played it right after beating Skies of Arcadia, so I was pretty hard to impress. I enjoyed the original Grandia on the Saturn much more, too.
I could never get into the FF games beyond part II, really. VII didn't really impress me all that much, but I do recognize that it was the first RPG to really use CG in a striking manner to tell a story (who's surprise character death PS II did almost a decade before!). It didn't really innovate much aside from that and the awesome magic effects, but it was still one hell of an RPG.

I couldn't get into skies of arcadia for some reason. Never tried the Y's series, though it does sound interesting. And thanks to Melf who helped inspire me to try phantasy star II when I started asking about it...
Never played any saturn rpg's...

Sorry about my little outburst, it's just that FF7 is so overrated by so many people that it bugs the hell out of me when another person praises it. That said, it's not a bad game, it's just ridiculously overrated.
Anyway, yeah I said before that SF is my favorite RPG, but really I love the entire series, PS... most Sega RPG's that I've played just kick ass.

I disagree about Sega RPGs. The Phantasy Star series is very good. The Shining Force series is very good. Past that (Oh, Crusader of Centy rules too), there isn't much there. They tried way too hard to make them different from the SNES RPGs and succeeded, but that didn't make them good.
I think that it is a shame that APE scrapped Earthbound 2, because Earthbound had an interesting plotline, excellent fights, great animation... sigh... it was just a great game.

I need to register my Magic Engine so I can play this game. About a year ago a friend gave me his broken old Duo with that game. I've had it in its case in mint shape. It has gotten so much praise I need to play through it.The soundtrack rocks when I put it in my stereo!

Don't diss the might of Beyond Oasis! Only it's not really an RPG, so...
rmalina
09-01-2005, 05:59 PM
I think that the fighting in Beyond Oasis is a little weak. A lot of the time the bad guys can't even fight back. Some of the bosses' attacks are impossible to evade. I like the game, but that is my beef with it.
Genesis Knight
09-01-2005, 06:21 PM
I can't believe that! Don't take this the wrong way, but I always thought the opposite. The fighting in Beyond Oasis is so much more dynamic than in, say Landstalker. In Oasis you have about twenty combat moves (not to mention bows and bombs), whereas in Landstalker you have a slash and jump slash.
rmalina
09-01-2005, 06:48 PM
Oh, I am not saying it isn't "dynamic". It just doesn't allow for attacks from the enemy. For instance. Once you start a combo on an enemy, it is left incapable of moving. That is what I meant. I like being able to do lots of moves.

It has its flaws, but the battle system is easy and fun, and the story, though cliche'd works pretty well.

I would hardly call the FF7 story "cliche'd". I think that the whole thing was very imaginative, and very well linked together. It is difficult to create a plot line that no one has ever thought of before.

Yeah, Beyond Oasis gets very easy at times. That's what the 100 level pit at the beginning of the game is for. ^_^

As far as the Genesis goes......
Pure RPGs:
Any of the system's three Phantasy Star games. PS2 is a great game to weed out the newbie RPG players as many of them will beg for mercy halfway through the first of many convoluted, confusing dungeons. PS3 is a step backwards, but still has a very nice "three generations" feature which helps in the storytelling. PS4 is the easiest of the three, but also the most cinematic and has the best-told story.
I also think Shining in the Darkness is one of the best old-school dungeon crawlers.
SRPGS:
Shining Force 1 and 2. I prefer the Fire Emblem series to this one, but these are still some high-quality games. I've heard decent things about Warsong (believe it's one of the Langrisser games), but never have played it.

You know the 100 Level pit where you get the Infinite Omega Sword? Try it out before you get any Spirits for a real challenge.
If you still don't know what I'm talking about, try my FAQ (I'm VortexSpin). =P

^ Yeah…the 100-level pit is a bit too easy with spirits, as you can summon Dytto (from slimes) or Shade (from armored soldiers). Dytto allows you to heal, obviously, while Shade can absorb hits for you.

non-md: ff7, fallout 2, baldur's gate
md: shining force 2, ps4, snatcher or shadowrun.. and I'm not sure if these count as rpg's but I also like arcus odyssey & warsong 2 (langrisser hikari 2)

My favorite Genesis RPG is hands down Shining Force.
My favorite RPG of all time is still hands down Shining Force.
What can I say? Nostalgia for the win. Game features a memerable cast of characters, classic storyline, simple yet fun and replayable gameplay. It's one of those few titles I can pick up at any time from any save point and just start playing. To this day I still get a kick out of the humor, the theatre in Rindo, the chicken transmogrifier in Marina, Jogurt sightings, and of course how fucking awesome is it to deliver a severe butt kicking to Dark Dragon with an entire Force of Jogurt clones?
I may appreciate other RPGs for their intricate universes, elaborate storylines, or breath taking artwork. But as far as fun and overall good feeling are concerned? Give me Shining Force anyday.

The original Grandia, hands down. It's simply the grearest RPG of all time, in my opinion.
Other than that.. Phantasy Star II and IV, Chrono Trigger, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Final Fantasy II and III are all good.
Obviously

Grandia does deserve more love, I actually enjoy it and as everybody knows by now I don't enjoy very namy RPGs, but it had the misfortune of competing with Final Fantasy VII so no one took any notice.
