Which is your favourite racer and why?
On the Genesis? Definitely the original OutRun. It just plays so smooth and is so much darn fun.

Eh, I didn't like the Genesis port of Out Run that much. The tunes are.. weird.
Although it's often derided, I'm gonna have to put my vote to Road Rash 3. The 7 different weapons, bike upgrades, and snitch/repo options put it at the top of the series for me.
RoadBlasters would be a close second.
right now I would say super hang on. When I start playing road rash 2 maybe I'll change my mind.

I played Super Monaco GP like there was no tomorrow, back in the day. And I thoroughly enjoyed playing through Super Hang On back then too.
As much as I revere good gameplay over graphics, and respect 16-bit stuff alot, to me driving games require a good deal of resolution, especially on today's larger TV's. So thusly, I don't play driving games anymore unless its on new systems.

Strangely enough, Combat Cars.
If you don't count OutRunners. ^_~

I recall this game having a very impressive techno soundtrack, and it was actually fun too.

Yeah, the music is indeed great. And the ability to blow up enemies is always a plus. It's another one of those unappreciated gems, really.

Fuck Virtua Racing.
You know I owned both Genesis and 32X versions as I was a VRacing fanatic. Way back in the day, Blockbuster was holding Genny and SNES gaming competitions. The Genny list of games included Virtua Racing, SOnic 2, and some platformer. I played VR to death to practice.
Now, and in fact just the other day I popped in the 32X version again and was appalled by the low-res ness of the game, esp on a 34" widescreen Trinitron. All I remember is that it looked much better on the small 13" TV I had and understandably so... DPI
I guess, IMO anyway driving games don't age well like others can, especially when resolution is so important.

I just always thought Virtua Racing was too graphics-oriented. Sound is minimal, and gameplay is bland.

Micro Machines, man.. Micro Machines. Simple racing joy.
Road Rash 2 I find to be a fantastic game, it just takes a bit of playing to adjust to the frame rate. Lotus II, Chase HQ 2, and Top Gear 2 I also quite enjoy, although I can't recapture the same fun now I once had with Top Gear 2. A buddy and I would play that game for hours souping up our cars and generally kicking ass, but now, the magic is gone. Lotus II is super smooth with a great sense of speed, and Chase HQ 2... well, it's just stupid fun.

The Micro Machines series indeed rocks. Especially the J-carts.

But Combat Cars *is* just like MM, except it has weapons!

1) Road Rash 1 (I had unlimited hours of fun with this game)
2) Super Monaco GP 1 (Yes, I finished the game...it was tough)
3) Outrunners
4) Outrun

Road Rash 1 is the only one I've played. How are 2 and 3?

3 is the best in terms of gameplay (7 weapons, more tracks, bike upgrades, the ability to snitch or repo if you run out of cash), but many people can't stand its digitized graphics, and you should pretend there isn't a two player option because it's so choppy. 2 is second best in terms of gameplay and its two player mode is playable.

I bought Virtua Racing today because it was oh so cheap and I always wanted to see it in action. It's a decent racing game for a few dollars.
Unplugging the 32X to play it is annoying. I'll get another Genesis soon enough!
Virtua Racing gets boring real quick. The graphics good but after a while the game just gets too repetitive and the fun goes away.

I love VRdx, but RR2 takes it home, I wish I had that game...
