View Full Version : History of: The Street Fighter series
It's appeared on almost as many consoles as it's had sequels released, but the Street Fighter phenomenon is still as strong as ever. There's a lot of history in this series, so much that it deserved its own History of article. Kick off your weekend Street Fighter-style, with our latest installment (http://www.sega-16.com/History%20of-%20Street%20Fighter.php).

Excellent, excellent! Bravo!
Very well done.
Very well written. I liked it. Street Fighter series is still the undisputed champ. When I first saw street fighter 2 in the arcade I was overwhelmed with how many buttons there were. I though I would never understand how to play it. Time past and I just love this series I got better playing it too.

The article neglects to mention fine details about 'Special Champion Edition' on the genesis, and how it contails all the tweaks and aditions that came with 'Hyper Fighting' in the arcade. It WAS NOT a dirrect port. . .
and Q-sound was not Capcom's technology, it belongs to Archer Communications™, and was farmed out to whomever wished to use it. It can be seen equiped on stereos and portable stereos and whatnot.
A common oversight.
That's the only problem really. . .
It's an otherwise quality article :)

Not bad at all, very detailed article. However the release chronography isn't so complete. If you'd care to update it for the sake of completeness, here's some additional release info. Each edition I list below is confirmed to exist, as I have played each of them personally and/or owned original copies:
* Street Fighter, Timex/Sinclair 1000 (1988)
* Street Fighter II, X68000 (1992)
* Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, IBM PC (1992)
* Street Fighter II, Commodore 64/128 (1992)
* Street Fighter II, Timex/Sinclair 1000 (1992)
* Street Fighter II, Atari ST (1992)
* Streer Fighter II, Game Boy / Super Game Boy (1995)
* Street Fighter Alpha, IBM PC (1995)
* Street Fighter Alpha II, IBM PC (1996)
* Street Fighter Alpha II, SNES (1996)
* Street Fighter Alpha III, IBM PC (1998)
* Street Fighter Alpha, Game Boy Color (2001)
Even after updating your piece with these entries, the list will not be complete, I'm afraid. There exist many, many official editions of the Street Fighter franchise, making it one of the more difficult games to keep tabs on.

HOLA!!
As far as ports are concerned:
- Does Tiger's hand held LCD game count as a port? :D
- Does a "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots"-type game using Guile & Blanka (I think) count as a port? :D
- Street Fighter came bundled in with Street Fighter II CD for IBM PC.
- Does anyone have scans/screen-shots of SSFIITurbo for the IBM PC? Unless there was a limited run or something, I think I would've seen a copy somewhere.
**Last minute addition**
You forgot to mention Street Fighter II released for the Master System in South America. And Street Fighter II Champion Edition was released for the PC Engine (A.K.A. Turbo Grafx 16) in Japan.
- The Street Fighter EX series was a lot more combo oriented than the Alpha series, in that you could cancel a regular attack into another regular attack into another regular attack into a special attack into a super attack into another super attack and so on. Combo wise, the EX game engine is a lot more forgiving than the Alpha game engine.
- Street Fighter 2010 wasn't so much a "Street Fighter" game as it was a game with Street Fighter references.
**end of last minute addition**
Having said that, the History of Street Fighter article mentioned a Street Fighter II Champion Edition for the Genesis in 1992. The timeline shows that SFII Special Champion Edition was released in 1993, but doesn't mention what happened to the 1992 Champion Edition. What happen? :D
The Genesis Super Street Fighter II had better game play. If I'm not mistaken, Game-Pro actually pointed out a few of the combos that could be preformed in the Genesis version, but not in the SNES version. (If there ever was a chance to use "Sega does what Nintendont"... )
It seems to be general opinion (or maybe it's just the people I know), but was SEGA's six button control pad officially released becaue of Street Fighter II SCE, or were their upcoming Eternal Champions a factor? (Admittedly, I remember seeing an EC ad specifically attacking SFII, muttering a few expletives at SEGA and deciding to avoid the franchise, until a few reviews for ECCD convinced me otherwise.)
SFIII was released to luke warm receptions, and I remember seeing people completely ignoring SFIII, and flocking to SFA3 machine next to it, day after day. Some preferred SFA3 because SFA3 featured a large cast of popular & recognizeable characters, SFIII didn't. Some preferred twitchy combo centric-gameplay of the Vs. series over the deep & tactical gameplay of SFIII. (Once more, SFA3, through it's use of "ism"s and roster, gave the players the option of picking between a twitchy combo centric V-ism Guy; or a tactical X-ism Zangief. SFIII didn't.)
Also, I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but I just downloaded & saw the SFIISCE promotional video. Which is exactly like the SNES SFII Turbo promotional video, with the obvious difference being the names & references. The Japanese ads that are shown at the end are advertisements for the Super Famicom Street Fighter II Turbo. (The original ads featured narration/graphics referring to Super Famicom & SFII Turbo, not to mention the SFII Turbo logo at the end; which was cut/edited for the SCE video.)
Adios.

# Street Fighter Alpha 2, IBM PC (1996)
# Street Fighter 2, Saturn & Playstation (1996)
# Street Fighter Alpha 2, SNES (1996)
You missed the word Alpha for the Saturn & Playstation release. There is also a Street Fighter Collection released for the saturn. A quick visit to ebat should prove it.
Then there is a special release for japan called Street Fighter zero 2 dash (might have been the 1st). Apparently a slight upgrade of the fisrt version. Ill look for further info.
Then i found this:

Ok, updated the list to include those that were missing. Some were already there, like the IBM PC SFA2 and the SNES Alpha 2, but a few were indeed missing.
Thanks!

Everyone seems to missunderstand me today. :)
I know the IBM pc game was on your list. The first part of my post was a direct copy/paste from your list. I only C/P:ed it to show you the missing word in Street Fighter Alpha 2 for saturn and dreamcast.
Ah, check. Fixed that too. :)

The last SF3 is called Third Strike, not Third Impact.
You left out Zero 2 Alpha (jp), also called Alpha 2 Gold (us) and sometimes called Zero 2 Dash. It was released on arcade, Saturn, and PSX, all only in Japan, with the US only seeing it as half of the first Street Fighter Collection.
The first collection is just called Street Fighter Collection, not Street Fighter II Collection. There was a second collection (missing from the list), called Capcom Generation 5 in Japan, Street Fighter Collection 2 in the US. Its US title is written in such a way that it looks like it says Street Fighter 2 Collection. In the US it was released for PSX, in Japan for PSX and Saturn. It's really part of the Capcom Generation series, a series of releases of classic Capcom games in threes (for example, one of them is all three GnG games). The first collection is Alpha 2 Gold, Super, and Super Turbo; the second collection is The World Warrior, Champion Edition, and Hyper Fighting.
You also left out Street Fighter EX and EX2 in the list, even though you mentioned them in the article. There was also an EX Plus and an EX2 Plus. I'm not sure how the plus vs. nonplus corresponds to the PSX releases though.
You made a slight error with "Super Street Fighter X for Matching Service" -- you left out the II.
Amiga had ports of Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II in addition to the original. I don't think it had a port of Champion/Turbo though.
Finally, there was an updated Alpha 3 on the Naomi board in 2001, called Zero 3 Upper (only distributed in Japan). I believe the new PSP game is called Zero 3 Double Upper.

Street Fighter IV very well better be 2d. It better be 2d, and it needs to be on Atomiswave or something. I hope they do something interesting gameplay-wise, making something original rather than a predictable "Third Strike meets Alpha 3" type gameplay.
Ok, updated with everything but the Capcom Generations release. Im not sure if there were actually 2 releases - with one coming stateside as Collection 2 - or if both were fused into the one Collection 2. I did add Collection 2 though.
Retooling this list has really convinced me that Capcom seriously needs to move on. :P

I'm not sure what you're not sure about. There was Street Fighter Collection for PSX and Saturn, all territories. Then there was Capcom Generation 5 for PSX and Saturn, which was called Street Fighter Collection 2 in the US, and only the PSX version was brought over here.
The way you have it now is okay. To be 100% correct it should probably say "Capcom Generation 5 / Street Fighter Collection 2, Saturn and Playstation (1998)", but that wouldn't be in-keeping with the format of the list as you don't provide alternate titles for any of the others.
Still missing are Zero 2 Alpha, and the arcade EX games (there were 4 Street Fighter EX games in arcades - SF EX, EX Plus, EX2, and EX2 Plus).
Also the proper names of the arcade SF3 releases are "Street Fighter III: New Generation", "Street Fighter III 2nd Impact: Giant Attack", and "Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future".
Now I feel really anal.. lol.
Changes made.
That should finally be it! Since it's a retrospective of the series itself and not the characters, the other Capcom vs. games aren't included. Only those titles that were specifically Street Fighter are on the list.
Thanks for the help j_factor, as always. :)

aah i remember how many times is street fighter alpha ported, its terrible how many time it has been ported.street fighter 2 also.Street fighter became a milk product if you ask me,there are still some great one,i liked the versus series marvel vs capcom capcom vs snk 1,2 al street fighetr games where ported to much. You can certianly pick the best ones,i think the Dreamcast is the ultimate Street figher console, since having third strike a very nice controller to play em" and having clean and perfect 2d graphics almost arcade perfect, maybe because of the naomi 2 board built inside the Dreamcast,if also liked the snk games best on DC because it handeld the best 2d graphics no blurr or small characters, which you gett in the ps2 version.I also tought that saturn always had better and less blurry 2d graphics then psx for instance compare street fighter alpha on psx to the saturn version, the saturn vesion had bigger characters and the pixels where damn sharp which i mean positif, the colors also where very bright.Still think capcom snk on psx is a shame.

yess the new features over the streetfighter franchise cuase thats the same as counting al the megaman games which are to many of.and be fair only on one hand you can count the good streetfighter games not the VS ones, admit that their are too many and it became a milking product its treu aint it,streets fighet alpha 3 many times ported vs mario party see who wins.
street fighetr alpha 3 on the platforms
Sega saturn
GBA
Psx
Dreamcast
Arcade
PSP
aniversiry collection streetfighetr ps2
X box also.
street fighet alpha collection.
VS the mario party games
1,2,3,4,5,6,7 VS 8 or more if that aint enough to make milk from, and thats only one part if you count all 3 parts streetfighter is way too pro port and mariuo just seems to be hly compared to Streetfighter yes and the mario party games at least aren 8 times the same lik Streetfighter 3,and BTW many streetfighter games are the same,Streetfighter 2 was great Turbo ans super streetfighter 2,pocket fighter the VS games where good, and #rd strike is the best streetfighter game ever made and then the dreamast version ways above the later ports, cause ps2 doesnt do 2D like the DC hell bo DC owns the ps2 On that part, sore for the mighty sony ps2 that it cant run 2D at normal speed and not a SS5 with tons of lacks and slowdown, loading vs teh almost no loading on the DC and bigger and more detailed characters even Motw on ps2 is missing sprites and animation poor ps2.
