View Full Version : S-Video to VGA?

Has anyone purchase one of those upscalers that convert S-Video singles to VGA?
I'm planning to ditch my POS CRT TV and purchase an good upscaler so I can play my games on a VGA monitor (can't find a good used CRT TV).
How good is the quality (I expect the picture to be slight fuzzy, but not that much)?
Does CRT Tube monitors and LCD monitors are the same quality correct?
LCD is nice and clear but slow, CRT is fuzzier, but very fast. I've never seen an LCD that you can use to play Sonic without seeing blur on backgrounds... Plasmas are supposed to be worse...

Actually, a Plasma has very little to no motion blur, and are very sharp, however, they burn in easily.

The best picture I have been able to get out of a Genesis was through straight RGB to an arcade monitor. The 0-1V RGB lines are a little weaker than most JAMMA arcade pcbs, but with some quick adjustments to the monitor the picture is great.

My TV looks like so (using RGB of SCART) !!!

And that's using a LCD VGA monitor correct?
LCD VGAs are much better than LCD TVs, but my 2ms LCD VGA can't handle Sonic Adventure.

2ms?
So what are the best LCD monitors?
I might just get a CRT monitor, but who knows.

using RGB of SCART
That comment does not make any sense. That's like saying "I'm using Y/C instead of S-video"

Actually it does.
SCART contains Composite, YC, RGB, etc. He's saying he's using the RGB part of SCART.

Just buy a SDTV with Component video inputs, and buy a RGB -> Component Transcoder. Go to Biglots or Radio Shack and buy an AC Adaptor, because the one with the Transcoder can't be used in the USA. Then buy RGB-wired SCART cables for all of your classic systems.
You'll need to mod it for audio if you use a system that doesn't have audio outputs. But that's *really* easy. I can't solder worth a damn, and I had my dad help me, and it was done within fifteen minutes.
I haven't played Genesis in S-video, either modded, or with one of those XMD devices, but there is a big difference between Saturn in S-video and Saturn in RGB (Component).

If your in europe though, you don't need to do all that. ;) Just get an RGB scart cable and your set.
Anyways, has the OP's original question even been answered yet?

I don't think Fighter17 lives in Europe. I know I sure don't.

Except the OP wants VGA. ;) That's 31KHz

Unless he's playing DC or Xbox, he's pretty much stuck with one of those crappy converter boxes.

Meh.
I'm in the US FYI.
Yeah upscaling for low res stuff will really make it look like shit?
I mean people buy the XRGB converters and they are happy.
I was planning to buy this:
http://www.svideo.com/svid2vga2audio.html
Svideo actually makes this product (and most of the products they sold on their website) and usually it's in high quality. I order many things from them before and it was all in high quality.

I think the XRGB upconverts the RGB to RGB. Just doubles the horizontal sync, that's all.

I also herd that the XRGB also upconverts S-Video singles as well.

I think so yes, but if you can upscale RGB, do it. The result is FAR better, as VGA itself is RGB.

I know that but I have to spend a lot more to get all my systems on RGB.
The results would be great but I can't spend that much money all at once.
Plus it's hard to do that when you live in the USA. :(

I live in the USA and did it cheap to nothing, to get RGB.
List me the consoles and I'll see if I can snap up a cable for them.

Remember, I don't have RGB, the best I got is Component.
I own a Saturn, Original Playstation, and an Genesis Model 2/Sega CD Model 2.
If you can do something, then I would actually want to thank you, and of course pay you if possible. ;)

you have a VGA monitor, that's RGB ;) It just needs the scanrate doubled, which XRGB would work.
for the Genesis, finding those 9-pin mini din connectors are quite hard.
for a playstation and Saturn, I'd need to see if i can find those connectors too. dead cables won't work, not enough used pins.

Didn't you just get a new TV not to long ago anyway?
Well, when anyone could easily (haha) get one of those XRGB devices a while ago, how else would someone in the USA be able to enjoy RGB? I don't think component video really existed on sets, and if it did, it prolly was very rare.
Who buys a XRGB anyway? I've yet to see an online store actually have one in stock for more than five seconds.

It was an used RGB TV which broke during shipping (I got my money back on it).
People can enjoy RGB by having an arcade machine or modding (or making RGB cables) their systems for RGB and attach them to RGB monitors.

Remember I have the Genesis Model 2 system (and it use different pins for the wires than the Model 1).
If I can get at least Component for these three systems then I'm happy as I can be. :)
If you want to talk more about it give me a PM.

I see. Well, anyway, what I mentioned also gives component video too. But whatever floats your boat. :)

Tiido's mods (and grammar) are ace  http://www.sega-16.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif
Thanks Rob !
It would be more confusing when I have said just SCART, becasue then you would have to guess what signals in SCART I use, as there's RGB, S-Video and Composite. RGB SIGNALS of SCART would have been more accurate...

The Viewsonic NextVision N6 will do what you are looking for. They pop up on ebay now and then. It will run you from around $150-180, which is less than the XRGB series, but more than some piece of junk you'd find on one of those console mod sites. It has composite, svideo, and component in, and will upconvert to up to 1280x1024. Unlike the XRGB2, it supports progressive signals as well (not a big deal for the Genesis, but good for Gamecube and Xbox).
I use it to connect my PS2 to my LCD monitor, and it looks great considering how awful the PS2 video output quality is. I've been told by others who use it that older systems look great on it (specifically Saturn through Svideo).

The Genesis outputs pretty much only progressive video.
