View Full Version : What is your favorite gaming console besides the Genesis?

Mine has to be the PS1. With titles like FFVII, (I know I am going to get some heat for that one) FFVIII, Ape Escape, Tomb Raider, Colony Wars: Vengence, Wipeout 3, Syphon Filter 1,2 & 3, Legend of Legia, Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 2, FF Tactics, Guardian's Crusade, Mega Man Legends, and Tomba! the choice is simple for me. Now, what are your guys' favorites?

Someone's gonna throw tomatoes at me but my favorite would have to be Dreamcast. It gives me classic Sega Action with modern 3d graphics, a nice combination. After that it'd be Saturn with it's huge original library.

I really can't decide between Dreamcast and Saturn, both of them have great pros and cons.

Without a doubt the SNES. I've always compared the SNES and Genesis to Ken and Ryu, two equally great rivals. :D

Maybe the SMS or the Saturn or the TurboGrafx.

Eh... that's a difficult one. I'd say that the TurboGrafx would be a solid choice though. Ys ftw.

And as a side-note, Vehemont; despite my outspoken stance on FFVII, I actually hold FFVIII in much higher disdain. Perhaps I should switch my complaints to that game for this thread instead to add some variety to the mixture.

Dreamcast, no contest.

I am playing through FFVIII for the first time right now so if you complain about it just don't add any spoilers! I have to say I am enjoying it even though it gets annoing to have to keep junctioning your characters. I like the story even better than FFVII right now. (Granted, I just got on the second disc.) Ok, back on topic, I also forgot to add Crash Bandicoot on my list.

I almost reflexively responded with "Neo Geo, of course," but then realized that outside of a few games I really don't play it that much. It's more sentimental for me at this point than anything else. If there was anyone around here to play fighters with, it might be different, but there isn't really (and yes, that's an invitation -- if you're around Baton Rouge and want to throw down at some KOF, MOTW, Samurai Shodown, or whatever, get in touch with me).

So outside of that, I'd say it's a tossup between my PS2 and original Xbox (and I'm leaning just a little towards the PS2). There are just so many good games for both of them that it could be years before I'm really tired of either of them.

NES/FC... I've got LOTS of happy memories with that thing. DC would fit the category too...

Saturn. It's the only other system that I own over a hundred games for. Everything about that system is just so interesting to me, for some reason. And I love the library.

I am also a fan of PSX, SNES, Turbo Duo, Dreamcast, GBA (seriously), and I'm becoming a fan of Amiga. Some would say the latter two aren't gaming consoles, but they kind of are for me. My main method of playing GBA games is with a Game Boy Player, and my Gamecube is pretty much a dedicated GBA console (I play Gamecube games on my Wii). And Amiga, I don't have an Amiga computer, only a CD32 console, with a floppy drive added on so I can play regular Amiga games. I guess that kind of blurs the line between what counts as a computer and what counts as a console.

PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The PS comes before the Mega Drive for me.

As I've only had three "major" gaming consoles in my life, the PlayStation comes second due to my teenie RPG-addiction period. My PS2 period was quite short and I got tired of 3D games so during that time I went back to the Mega Drive.

The psone was a godly console to have at the age of 12, The whole demos thing was a beautiful touch, buying magazines every week I must have had around 70 demo disks all with around 6 games to try out each, sure a collection of them alone would have been decent...

Couple that with the fantastic platinum series which sold games at an excellent price and the tonnes and tonnes of great titles and franchises and you find yourself with a console that is above all the rest, although pitiful far behind one, the megadrive of course :)

What comes before the Megadrive doesn't count in this thread. So nyaa. But, since we haven't yet started arguing the relativity of the Playstation's excellence as compared to the Saturn, I can take a rare moment to agree with you that the Playstation does have some serious merits.

PS2 = DVD player

This will be popular...

I have the most good memories with my Nintendo 64... by far

Note: I was too young to enjoy the 16 bit generation to its fullest. I only recently acquired a SNES and Genesis. Those two receive the most playtime now (I feel awful that it took me this long to play NHL 94).

I'm not sure I like my dreamcast but also my xbox 360. But anyhoo on the subject of FF7... I love that game soooooo so much.

I would like to take a moment just to share my love for my PS2 with everybody. I currently see no need to post anymore pictures of how awesome my PS2 is.

Tie between PS1 and Dreamcast. They serve different parts of my tastes. Ps1 primarily for RPG's and dreamcast for my action and arcade play. I have more sentiment for the dreamcast b/c sony has pissed me off significantly since the ps1 days.

Don't have a personal favorite.

Saturn and Dreamcast because they were the greatest arcade port systems ever made. PSX was good as well (come on, better ports of DoDonPachi, Raiden shmups, my god). If you love fighters and shmups the Saturn and Dreamcast are your best friends.

I also love the Neo-Geo (planning to get a consolize MVS after I sold my NGCD collection, loading times suck), and the TurboDuo.

If you really love arcade games like I do, the perfect setup (for me) is:

Supergun for PCBs.
Maybe a few arcade cabs.
PC Engine Duo-R.
Consolize Neo-Geo MVS.
Genesis/Sega CD.
Saturn.
Dreamcast.
PSX.

And I should be in heaven with this set up. PS2 did have good arcade ports, but I can get just the PCBs.

Master System is my favorite, more so than megadrive. I'm also very fond of Dreamcast, Neo Geo, Amiga, and others but I don't really play them very often.

A year ago I would've said the DC withouth thinking twice, but now, I don't know what to say. My top 5 list would probably be like this, but the top 3 could change anytime:

1-Dreamcast
2-Genesis
3-Nes
4-GBA
5-Snes

6-NDS
7-Lynx
8-Gamegear
9-Sega Master System
10-Atari 2600

I find the dreamcast settles my need for neogeo games. it has a few great ports. rpg's i'd love to see more of on dc. unfortunately its a bit too much to undertake in indie dev.

DC can run SNES, Genesis, GameGear, Master System, Game Boy/Game Boy Color, NeoGeo, NES, and MAME. Those are just the mainstream ones. There are defunct emus for everything from Atari to Commodore.

I have always wanted to buy a DC but I have only seen one at the store I go to and I did not want to spend the money I had at that time on it. What is a reasonable price for the system, cables, controller, and VMU?

Genesis Knight
10-26-2007, 11:31 PM
I can't speak for hauls in the wild, but on eBay you should be able to find a system + plus two controllers + a VMU + hookups for about $20 or $30 on BIN plus shipping. I would buy it without games, to be honest, as they drive up auction bundles more than they should. (They're dirt cheap individually, and DCs run 'backups' out of the box, if you're into that.)

Just save a search on eBay and snap up the choice BIN when it comes along. That's what I did.

My favorite console besides the Genesis is the Super NES because the Nintendo Franchises likes Super Mario and F Zero and the several RPGs.

XBox. With the exception of my Genesis I've had more fun with this system than any others I own.

My list would go something like this:
Playstation/SNES/Mega Drive
NES/Amiga
Master System
GBA
Playstation 2 - Didn't care about it for the first couple of years but lately there have been some good titles.
Gameboy & other portables
TGx16
PS3/Wii - Haven't played a game that I really liked yet. :(

And apart from those I don't really care, but Saturn seems mildly interesting and so do the latest portables.

Prolly the Xbox, seeing I own the most games after the Genesis.

For me its the Saturn, but having to import many of its best games is expensive and annoying and seeing as I have no money or patience it lies pretty dormant at the moment. :(

I'd have to say the PS1, because of my fetish for DDR.

Saturn or Dreamcast. I love the ability to burn games for the Dreamcast so I can at least have a chance to play the rare stuff. Saturn is great but it is hard to find the good domestic stuff. Still though I have found memories of playing through Magic Knight, Albert Odyssey, and Panzer Dragoon Saga.
