I just got a Sega CD II, and have been trying to hook it up to my Genesis model II, but I'm not sure how to connect it. Do I use this mixing cable port? If so, how? What else needs to be hooked up and where to get this going?

Atleast I had an extra power adapter laying around.

Just plug it in and supply both power, that's it.

The mixing cable is only for the Genesis 1. Though if you plug one in, it'll probably shut off the Genesis-made sounds so you can actually enjoy Lord of Thunder.

Well, I popped in the Genesis to the SegaCD, and supplied both power. It never lights up, as if it doesn't exist.

If I find out i've wasted MORE money on a CD based system, eBay burns to the ground.

Might be a touchy connection between the Genesis and the CD unit. Try cleaning/adjusting the contacts like you would with a non-working cart.

When I get home, I will.

So if the mixing port was for the model 1 only, what do I do with the basic RCA jacks then?

Plug it into a stereo, which usually gives better sound than a TV.

Mixing jack was used because the model 1 Genesis couldn't output it's Cartridge/PSG/YM2612 sound out of the expansion connector. Model 2 Genesis can, so the mixing is done via the expansion connector on the model 2 genesis.

Well, I cleaned it, and it's still acting like it doesn't exist. It doesn't even light up when the Genesis is on. Maybe I need to find an official Sega AC adaptor, not this piece from RadioShack.

Also, how does it really turn on anyway, do I just take the cart out of the 32X so it goes straight to the CD, or what?

Yes, to boot the CD system you may not have any cartridge inserted (expect for Back Up RAM for save purposes etc.)

Can someone with a RAM cartridge try booting it in a vanilla Mega Drive, with no Mega-CD console attached? I'm interested in what makes it different from a regular cartridge.

I think you just get a black screen in that scenario.

yea, black screen, the RAM cart doesn't even connect the "CART ENABLE" pin, so technically the Genesis just does nothing, boots cold.

Quick obvious question here: Does the Sega CD model 2 take the same AC adaptor as a model 2 genesis or does it use a model 1 genny adaptor like the first sega cd?

evildragon

same adapter as first sega cd and genesis.

Yeah. I had an extra power adapter from RadioShack (of all places) lay around and plugged it in. It didn't go into the Genesis 2 or the 32X, but it went in the CD. Not that it matters, cause it's not turning on. Maybe I need an official Sega one.

The Genesis 1 and Sega CD 1 have the same AC adaptors as far as size, but not voltage. 1 outputs 17 watts and the other 35 watts.

.....

God dammit. Seriously. Damn him to his own hell.

Wait till my next minuscule pay check, then I get to type in "Sega CD power adapter" in eBay and cry.

Check your local thrift stores, they sometimes have AC adapters hanging on a wall. It's rare that they sell the system and the adapters together. Zavrri! Or is it Zavvri?

Not mine, both my Sega CD 1 and Sega CD 2 powerbricks are literally the same blocks as my Model 1 Genesis.. Amps and voltage.

(Sorry joe, my reply isn't appearing right now so I can't edit it to add this)..

VinnyT, if you plugged in an adapter with the wrong polarity, there's a chance you either blew the fuse, or killed the unit. The fuse, if you PMed me for that, I can help..

Did you get them new or used?

You got a brand new never used or opened Sega CD 2 that didn't work?

No, it died in 98 when I moved to florida, it died in storage from the heat. It worked great before that.

AC power brick on ALL my Sega CD's are: MK-1601

I wonder why Sega gave me a 35watt one with my brand new model 1. The model 1 I found at a thrift shop also had a 35watt ac adapter.

Sega did change the spec throught the Genesis history. I don't know why exactly, but they went from 8.5v to 10v.
