interesting. To bad there is no cartridge slot.

Why why WHY won't they put an actual cartridge slot in these?

Cost cutting, and keeps people from sticking in a game that requires 6 buttons, less customer service headaches I imagine. Surprisingly good game selection already available though.

Tectoy don't sell cartridges anymore, so it wouldn't be in their interest to have a cart slot on it, plus it would make the whole unit bigger and more expensive. The latest master system consoles they sell don't have cart slots either, they do have a ton of games built in though, including some new ones such as an interesting looking bomberman clone.

I wonder if it actually has Genesis-capable hardware (68000, etc) or if it is just something else which is running these games via emulation?

I guess its the same system on a chip that the plug in TV games that came out recently have. Theres a variety of Master System handhelds like this now, none are Tectoy branded though.
Tectoy released a DVD/Karoke player recently that plays Megadrive games too.

Wow, super-smart to include Ecco the Dolphin but not Ecco the Tides of Time and Sonic and Knuckles but not Sonic 3.

I must add that my six years of Spanish has helped me understand that the thing will run on three AAA batteries and have a headphone jack as well as one for TV display.

A wise statement.
The games in that list, while varied and generally quite good, misses out so many awesome titles.

I'm pretty sure the Genesis collection for PSP, which I paid $18 for, has every game on that list but S&K.
I really wish they'd just put Alex Kidd & the Enchanted Castle out of its misery. It's just really horrible, yet seems to be on every Genesis / MD compilation ever made.

And in that time nobody bothered to tell you that Portuguese is the language of Brazil?
I'm an uncultured, barbaric American and I knew that! ;) :p
Also, I love The Revange of Shinobi, but it's not as good as "Revenge of Shinobi"

These things always have extremely awkward game lists. I'd bet the makers don't even know anything about the games other than their names. Still this is the best one of these things I've seen so far, which isn't saying much.

Hey, that was just a nitpicking cheap shot.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to my game of Gain Graund... ;)
These clone systems as far as I know are never emulated, since it is lot easier to make a fully working clone than start implementing the thing in say FPGA. But not always they succeed in getting a decent clone (now looking at my Russian clone and thinking what a piece of shit).

All of the Romance languages share a large amount of vocabulary, and Spanish and Portuguese are particularly similar. So somebody who's pretty fluent in Spanish should be able to make out a good amount of Portuguese (written moreso than spoken).
Of course, you probably knew that...

Mega Drive Portable (sverkh"yarkiy screen)
The new portable prefix Mega Drive Portable will become outstanding gift all worshippers 16- TI of the bit play console Of sega. Now you will be able never to not part from your dear prefix and to play under absolutely any conditions, in the road, on leisure and in the guests in friends. You will be able to take with yourselves all your dear cartridges, indeed for the larger convenience, they are let out in the new size, which is characterized by small sizes. You more should have two consoles, portable and usual, for the connection to the domestic television set. In the portable prefix the possibility of connection to the television set is provided.

From what I understand, a portable MD with cartridge slot, but new and smaller shaped cartridges. Thx to Babelfish!

Those handhelds are sold in Russia, and perhaps elsewhere too. They do indeed use different carts, they look like GBA carts, and come in DS style plastic cases:

I must say I find the MD Max extremely sexy!

No sadly they aren't mine. Apparently they are fairly easy to get in Russia, and the games only cost the equivalent of a few euros each. I've seen games based on The Incredibles, Pirates of the Carribean and other modern franchises too, they're most likely hacks of exsisting games, but still interesting.
The MD Max seems to be 'inspired' by the GBA Micro, it does look pretty awesome, although the three playing buttons might not be that great given their layout and size.

That Russian system looks pretty sexy. Are all the games pictured hacks? I don't see any documentation with the open games, like manuals, so I'm wondering how legit the whole thing is.
The games that exist are not hacks, but they may be hacked (i.e region lockouts, copyrights removed), or hacks (the modern franchises). And the carts it uses have a flash chip inside, but if they are reflashable is not determined. The distributor that sells them in Russia has none in Estonia (but one other that don't sell it has some here)... if they had any, I'd get one immediately despite the fact that they're poorly made, and have some minor issues... They don't give manuals, maybe some online guides (like in newgame.ru)
playgen
11-13-2007, 12:01 PM
Well they're not licensed by Sega or anything. Most of the games are the usual released ones, perhaps hacked with Russian Text (I know a few games are), the use of more recent artwork is quite common practice amongst pirates.
Usual hack that is done is region lockout removal. Translations are usual things... they have pretty talented people there who do great job on translating the ROMs.
If anyone wants, I can give you a ROM with Russian translated Adventures of Batman and Robin... home dumped, bit perfect. VERY well done translation, all texts and GFX with text are touched...

I find it amusing and ironic that getting a Nomad will be cheaper than this.
Of course, when you factor in the battery prices for the sheer number needed, they might equate.

You do realise that a PSP, plus the Genesis Collection UMD, would set back a Brazilian something in the region of $700? In comparison, this machine will cost $110.
[edit] And it won't have a cartridge slot because then people could play any game, not the built-in games Tectoy are selling them. I'm sure if people are gut-wrenchingly desperate for Mega Drive-to-go, they can find some way of sticking in a cartridge slot of their own - like Ben Heck did with a couple of plug-and-play units. Unless they'd rather grouch about it on the Internet and not buy it anyway.

What I'd really like to see some company make is new versions of Game Gear and Lynx, with high quality screens, rechargeable battery and cartridge slots. It will never happen though. Those handhelds are so awful to play on after you've gotten used to modern handhelds like the DS with their blur free screens.
I'd pounce (no pun intended) over a rerelease of the Lynx II. What an underappreciated little sytem that was.

The small screen on this thing looks pretty nasty.
If anything, why don't some company just create one of these with the games that everybody loves.
So just Stick Sonic 1 and 2 on there, then Streets of Rage 2, Thunder Force games and be done with it. No need for any more of these really after that.

Eww, the new style Sonic just totally doesn't go for such a classic game as Sonic 2.
The original art style is so much better, that is Sonic, not this green eyed thing. They probably think the newer Sonic is cooler and 'leeter' but it really isn't the case, the orginal feels so much more defined and overall more excellent. That's Sonic.

That MD Max looks like a digital camera with it's button layout... The packaging on those games looks pretty good too, except Battletoads. If I lived in Russia or Brazil and had to take a train or bus to work/school, I'd buy one. Then I'd be too busy actually playing the games than crying about how it doesn't have a cart slot or Sega CD built in or some other thing. Beats Sudoku.

Most of the comments say they won´t buy it because of the use of AA batteries and the lack of cartdrige slot... and it´s too expensive. It´s better to buy a PSP and play Genesis on emulator, according to some of them.
