I brought my Genesis over to a friend's place last night and at one point escaped from the crowd and their substance abuse long enough to play through Sonic 2 up to Oil Ocean. I discovered something rather strange in Oil Ocean Zone 2.. I took some shots today in KGen to document it.

What you see here is an area in Oil Ocean Zone 2 with an awkward looking crevice to Sonic's right. Jumping into the crevice in a particular way (jump in while falling right, but be sure not to touch the wall to the right) causes Sonic to burst upward at great speed.

To get the most out of this zaniness, if you hold right as you're flying upward, you will be hit by the spikes at the top of the wall and be knocked backwards into the launcher.

Instead of the launcher firering you to the right as it normally does, you will instead be dropped downward in ball form and hit the ground immediately below. Upon contact, Sonic is forced into the spike crevice.

Once you're lodged in the ground, jumping out produces a rather unusual thing. Your jumping height and running speed is dramatically increased, as if you have a permament running shoe power-up. It seems like this can be nullified by moving into a launcher, but otherwise you can frolic about in the level with this bizarre maneuverability. I've gotten a few other glitches to show themselves while messing around in that corner, such as clipping through walls and through floors, only to be trapped in the oily muck below.

Maybe this glitch is old news, who knows. Has anyone else ever come across this? I'd be curious to know if this kind of thing could be recreated in other levels of Sonic 2, I just don't recall any areas with a construction similar to this particular spot of Oil Ocean Zone 2.
